OT: Happy Easter/Eating and Drinking Thread

Submitted by Gallagher on

Happy Easter!

We've got a nice beef tenderloin in the oven for later tonight, and I've been saving the first Oberon of the season for today.

What are your big Easter plans?

Edit: I'm gonna posbang you all because it's Easter. Have a good one with family and friends!

We have had a feral sheep on our property since November.  We caught the ewe the day after Thanksgiving and she is residing at SASHA Farms now..........It is a rescue operation that does not kill animals for food or anything else.  It is sort of a friendship home for lost animals.

We've been trying to catch the ram (Rambo) to send him to the farm with his girlfriend.  We failed once again........when a 200 pound ram is running at me, a tackle is the last option.

So.............Bloody Mary.........plural time.

but i can't promise he won't be, um, put to work here on the farm.

remember too, sheep are so dumb they make cows look like PhD's.    a little grain and he'll be putty in your hands.   watch the head, grab the horns.

About to assemble a new charcoal grill I just bought (only 26 east steps!) so I can grill asparagus, corn on the cob, scallops & a marinated flank steak.  Enjoying a cup of coffee and some easter basket candy (reese's eggs & Malley's chocolate bunny) in front of the fire w the wife.

Only way to go.

May as well buy lobster though; it ends up being cheaper.

Also, have not been enthused at cooking scallops at home; I have a gas range, propane torches, and several cast-iron cooking utensils, none have got the adequate heat to get a proper crust on a scallop, even with $20 per pound one.

Much easier to buy lobsters for $6-8 per pound, break them up, and butter poach them sous-vide style, and make a lobster risotto with the shells.

Big Steel Keg; grate settings let me control charcoal temp from ~200 to ~500.

Still does not get hot enough to properly sear/char a steak (700+), especially since I like my steaks rare.

Thus will be giving in and buying a propane grill with an IR side burner to sear meat.  Especially since I like sous-vide-ing a lot of stuff.

You ever try the Alton Brown technique of loading the chimney with hardwood charcoal, getting it blazing hot, and then just putting the grate right on top for high-heat searing? He did it for tuna, but I'm sure you could do it for steak too. One drawback: not a lot of room for searing! Also, last year (after reading about it on this site) I made flank steak "cowboy" or "caveman" style--just set it directly on the hardwood charcoal. It worked fine, but I wasn't convined it was any better than using the grate.

Have a 7 pound point brisket going since 930AM on my grill/smoker.

Am looking at a legit propane grill (Napoleon 500 with infrared side-burner for flash-searing) in the next few weeks once we return from our vacation.

Had a 3 Bloody Mary brunch, just finished putting down rubber mulch (hopefully done with this crap for the next 15 years).  Am drinking a Stone Enjoy By 4/20/15.

Happy Easter/Passover and a Baba Booey to y'all. Will be headed out to Mutt's on the Newport peninsula for brunch and growlers of newly arrived Oberon. Will be a sloppy Sunday.

going on spring break? I have to make sure Sirius isn't on when my kids get in the car. sometimes I start the car and Stern was left on and the display will read "Robin's News" and other times it will say "The most beautiful black penis".

and coffee... 98 eggs hidden. 97 found. Going for a morning walk, then my kids are organizing a hunt for the little kids at noon (pacific). Last day of Spring Break, so plenty of fun before the tears of a Sunday, post vacation, night...and my kids will be sad too.

It was nice, but per usual with kids and vacation, we had one get the flu...so 24 hours of barfing and a whole trip wondering who would get it next. Nobody did. Overall a good time. Fun in nature, cooking on a fire and hiking. Visited a winery (Alma Rosa) and Figueroa Mountain Brewery in Buellton too. Thanks for asking.

in our tiny local press literally the next day after you explained what it was.  apparently it is coming to our area too.  and isn't it true that drinks around a camp fire taste like the nectar of the gods?

sorry you had a sick little one, but sounds like a nice trip on the whole.   good luck with back-to-school issues.

Ham, roasted for 6 hours in a bath of cider, cider vinegar, molasses, Worcestershire, soy sauce, cloves and thyme. So good. Especially when you reduce the sauce after and fry slices in it for breakfast later

Happy Easter to those on the Gregorian calendar, and happy Easter next week to my comrades on the Julain calendar (I am Russian Orthodox, myself - our Easter is next week)

just go down to the hen house.  winter eggs average around 2 dozen a day.  summer time we get 4-5 dozen/day.

eggs cooked.  pancakes on the way.  big brunch, read to the kids.  nap time.

ham tonight with the trimmings.  sunday is dessert night too, so that will fit in just perfect.
