OT - Game of Thrones S04E01: Two Swords

Submitted by MGoBender on

Spoiler Note: This worked in past seasons, so let's try again.  Please, no book spoilers.  If you're unsure if you're hinting too much at something from the books, respectfully keep it to yourself.  Assumption here is that everyone in this threads is up to date on the TV show and no more.  Those of us watching the show before reading will return the favor when the series inevitably passes George's writing :)

MGoBitching Note: We've officially hit the MGoDeadPeriod with regards to the big sports, so there's gonna be off-topic threads.  See the title?  This thread is about a TV episode.  If you don't like that, post your complaint in the Moderator Sticky, not here.    Mucho gracias.

Here we go!!!

(Fully aware I might sound like a stereotypical book-is-better guy here.)  But the scene at the inn is even better in the book, and includes what I think is the best murder scene in the whole series to date.  If you think TV Arya's a psycho....  The show already made up for it last year though.

(This post is actually a reply to boogaloo.)

"Next time you're going to do something like that, tell me first."

Very strong contender for best line of the whole series.  I love what that says.  No, I don't mind that you stole my knife, jumped randomly off the horse, pretended to be lost and hungry, and stabbed the shit out of some people by a campfire just minding their own business but who nevertheless needed stabbin'.  Totally fine with all that.  I just want a little advance warning.

(P.S. glad you picked up what I was putting down, but as there are folks currently reading, I was trying to be as thoroughly vague as possible, so maybe you could edit your post?  I purposely replied to my own to leave that option open.)

This is by far the best series on TV, IMO... I really like how even though there are fantasy elements and things that are way off of the spectrum of reality, the story feels real. The nasty hard realism of how things go down, and what lengths people go through to backstab, betray, lie and steal are probably a clearer picture of our Medieval history than anything in a non-fiction book.  Even though I've read all the available books so far, the show is different enough that it doesn't really spoil anything. I can't wait for this season to unfold, and I appreciate a forum to talk about it here. Arya was always my favorite Stark, but I feel like she's way more of a badass in the book than the show...

This show is easily one of my favorites on TV right now.  I wouldn't say it's the "best by far", but it is damn good.  Hannibal has been absolutely incredible this year, and it's my favorite show, but Game of Thrones is right there.  Arya and the hound could be a great spin off show, that I would totally watch.

It will be interesting to see if Book 6 comes out before the material is surpassed by the TV show.  Undoubtedly the TV show will end before Book 7 comes out, but I think Book 6 is a toss up.  Reasons being:

  • His last two books took 5-6 years to come out
  • Season 4 of the show will finish Book 3 (and for Bran's story push into Books 4/5)
  • Season 5 of the show won't get past Book 5 (and it's likely that Season 6 of the show includes material from book 5)
  • Season 6 of the show would begin in April of 2016, or approximately 5 years after Book 5 came out.

I've heard that GRRM is writing Spring at the same time as he's writing Winter, which would account for his pace matching his previous pace even though he's talked about definitely feeling the motivation to get done before the show catches up.

I would therefore not be wildly surprised to see Winter come out next year and Spring come out right at the same time Season 7 finishes the show in 2017.  That would be ludicrous-speed pace for GRRM, but remember all this time he's also been writing all sorts of companion books, whereas I think for now he's said he's put all that stuff behind him for a single focus on finishing the series.

Intresting - thanks for the insight.

I think, at some level he's gotta be a greedy bastard and will realize that if the show outpaces his books - he'll likely sell less of them.  Especially because I believe that he pissed off a lot of fans with how long it's taken to get books 4 and 5 out, along with how 5 ended (I haven't read but I have heard it leaves a lot of stuff open).

One really big thing in particular, actually.  But in general, yeah, where Storm sort of tied up a few storylines and was a pretty good bright line between phases of the story, Dance has one big cliffhanger, one "phase shift", and the rest of the storylines are just kind of left off in the middle.

So if you want a few laughs, read this interview with Rory McCann (The Hound), who I would love to drink with:

Just one highlight:

"The last time I went there, I was hitching, and... [Pause] No, I'm not even gonna tell you. Something bad happened, and basically, I can't go to Portree anymore. [Laughs] There's some big fisherman that's gonna punch me, and I don't know what he looks like. All I know is his name is Big Murdo."
