The only reason we think that's frowned upon is because the NCAA frowns upon it. And only in the bizarro world of the NCAA is commerce in benign services by the very workers who provide those services frowned upon. Bear in mind that this is the same organization that views selling your own shit as some sort of infraction, but has nothing to say about a university literally fabricating transcripts to keep athletes eligible. Also: I don't know too many non-profit organizations whose CEOs make $3 million a year.

So yeah. The only appropriate response is to stop frowning upon athletes for trying to realize their market value and to start frowning upon the NCAA.

Sort of.  Society is structured so that only the [0.1% ]really have enough money to make truly significant contributions. For those people to be comfortable dealing with a charity they need one of their own running the charity.   So cousin Biff gets a Cush job and the charity gets some nice donations.

well said.

it's sadly humorous to watch the contortions of so-called traditionalists discuss how many angels can dance on the head of the NIL pin.  The fact is, the NCAA is a front to run sanctioned unfair labor practices for the business owners....err I mean universities.  End the hypocrisy, openly pay the players.

I always wonder why people write about the NCAA as though Michigan wasn't the NCAA itself.  The NCAA is just an association of universities and colleges.  It's not some heinous scheme foisted on the Earth by a secret Martian cabal.  The NCAA frowning on things is the universities frowning on things.

And the UNC scandal, for the bazillianth time, didn't involve the NCAA because it wasn't aimed at keeping athletes eligible.  Repeating the lie doesn't make it come true.  It was a purely academic scandal that only incidentally involved athletes.

And the NCAA President make a fifth as much as the CEO of Delta Dental of Michigan, which has about 50% larger revenues.

The way the article emphasized 'Auburn could be a MAJOR contender' makes Michigan sound like a less desirable destination if the money train is important for him. Actually, this might be the best thing that can happen to a recruit like Traore, accepting an offer that is financially silver-lined, then accepting another one if the first coach gets sacked.

Its probably more likely all three of Dickinson, Diabate, and Houstan go than none of them go. I don't think either of those options are likely but its almost certain there is going to be an open scholarship and that is before you even get to the possibility of a random transfer out from someone like Barnes or Tschetter

NIL aside, he chose a shady school once. I'd expect him to choose another shady school (Memphis, Kansas, etc.) when he transfers. Sure would be nice to have him here.

Michigan likes the kid, as they spent time and effort to recruit him.

Hopefully Moussa can bend Yohan's ear a little bit here, as he would be a great addition and one that Michigan was still pursuing even with 4 commitments in the fold.

we'll see

I would also love to see Juwan go after Malik Reneau who just decommited from Florida. Dude would be a monster in Juwan's system. He's got an automatic jump hook, good rebounder, pick n pop threat not mention that he played with Caleb Houstan and Zeb Jackson. Would be shocked if Juwan hadn't spoken to the kid before

I dnot think this deserves its own thread, but i saw on my feed the other day a list of the "top prospects who didnt make the NCAA tourney" and it was littered with kids we were close on but didnt get. It doesnt MEAN anything, i dont think, but i thought it was interesting that for all our bitching about our #1 class, there were a lot of top flight kids who didnt carry their teams to anything successful that we were in on. Since i dont follow bball closing THAT closely until they are close to or planning to join Michigan, thought it was interesting that i knew so many names.

I do wonder if the money starts to become even, meaning Michigan's NIL can match say LSU's, does the coaching philosophy become a bigger sell.  Because one and done kids may want to go to a Memphis/LSU/Auburn type of program where there is no structure or restriction to their play.  Where as other one-and-done's who really care about development or learning to play in a system will go to the Michigan/Nova/Zaga types.  Just a random thought but it's one of the things that will be interesting now that the paying field is a bit more even.
