OT (but football!): Cam Newton describes calling a play

This is a few years old, but it came across my twitter feed today and figured some here might enjoy it.

Cam rules. Works his ass off, loves the game, great leader.

I'm wildly entertained whenever a GM makes choices more out concern for their career than, say, making the team good. The Bears trading for Foles for an "open competition" and paying him way more than Cam is getting in NE stands out.

"Great leader" is very subjective, IMO. I agree with the first two. But he's kind of immature at times, and it looked pretty bad when he didn't even try to dive on his own fumble in a key moment of the one Super Bowl he reached.

His leadership and accuracy are reasons I would avoid him. He DOES work really hard, which is leadership in itself, so it's not *all* bad. But I wouldn't view him as a franchise QB.

Leadership is really subjective but when I watch him I see constant communication, energy, positivity with teammates. He's obviously not perfect and had some issues early but guys seem to really follow/like him.

I'm interested to see how NE uses him. Curious if we'll get some clear Michigan/Pats/Ravens commonality beyond base stuff given the coaches involved.

Really that fumble, after all these years? It all is based on an assumption that he recognized where it was at the moment, then muscle memory kicked in to let his body move in time. I think most defenders run more fumble drills than QBs. Seems like a huge leap to question Newton's leadership when the man has put his body through abuse most of us will never know and continued to play with a shoulder so injured that he couldn't even throw a hail mary pass when needed.

I dunno if you've ever watched QB helmet cams, but they're wild. Like, you can barely see anything, you have no time -- watching them make good decisions, again and again, knowing what they can actually see and how little time they have, is INCREDIBLE.

I was a cam doubter when he was coming out of college (partly because I liked Oregon and was bitter). But I usually took a rookie QB in fantasy and he was the best rookie available so I took him and he tore it up. Helped me win. been a cam believer since then lol.

Fantasy is different than reality. You can put up big fantasy points without being a great NFL quarterback. I won a league last year with Josh Allen as my primary QB. How? He runs the ball pretty well.

But that's not what wins you games.

Denard Robinson would have been a fantastic fantasy asset in college, but his passing abilities left a lot to be desired.

charm and humor and intelligence - he clearly has forgotten 5x more about routes and schemes and tendencies than I will ever comprehend.  Thanks for sharing.

That was pretty cool. Lots of information to process within a very short amount of time. It takes me about the same amount of time if not longer to decide whether I want grilled onions or raw onions at 5 guys lol.
