OT - Fantasy Football Preparation

Submitted by He Hate Me on July 9th, 2020 at 12:24 PM

If all goes according to plan we are less than 2 months out from when Fantasy Football drafts will begin.  I need some advice as I prepare and have some genuine interest in other conversation topics.

QUESTION 1

Keep 2 of the following in a 1/2 point PPR League (If it matters who to keep - I'll be drafting last in the 1st round, which is essentially round 3 after the keepers are selected)

  • Saquon Barkley
  • DeAndre Hopkins
  • Mike Evans
  • Chris Godwin

QUESTION 2

What is the best fantasy team name you've seen?  My nomination goes to My Ball Zach Ertz

QUESTION 3

Anyone involved in the deep dynasty leagues with salary caps, contracts, etc.?  Is the juice worth the squeeze to put forth that amount of thought?

QUESTION 4

My work pal says Fantasy Football is like Dungeon's and Dragons for adults.  Should I fight him?

Bless you all.

1.  keep saquon and hopkins and it's not close

2. year of the lockout:  "rock out with my lockout"

3.  I've never done it but it seems like it's taking a fun thing and making it too complicated

4.  while your buddy seems lame, I will say people that try to tell you about their specific teams don't grasp that nobody cares

3. I used to do full GM leagues in multiple sports with full rosters, salary cap, contracts, etc (essentially mirrors an actual league with 30+ teams), but once I had a wife and kids I simply didnt have the time during the day or the brainpower left at night to keep up. So I would say it's fun if you want to nerd-out, but it's a full time job and the offseason is just as much work, if not more than the actual season.

Agree on Saquon and Hopkins. I expect both Evans and Godwin's numbers to decline this year.  I know- Brady is better than Winston, but Brady will throw to his RB's and TE's much more often.

1. I'd keep Saquon with Godwin in the discussion.

2. It ertz when eifert

3. I'm in two dynasty leagues. I have a ton of fun with them. Some players are addicted though and are in like twenty leagues or more because they're convinced they can make a steady stream of cash doing that many leagues. Many times they are the kinds of dudes who play around with stocks casually and think they're a Walmart Warren Buffett. They also tend to prey on inexperienced or indifferent players and get incredibly butthurt when you won't counter their shitty trades. I'm mainly ranting about one dude in my league.

4. I have a ton of fun with it throughout the week but people who take the competition too far can ruin it for others. I'd leave him be and keep playing.

I'd keep Saquon and Hopkins. Evans and Godwin are great options, but they've got a 43 year old QB throwing to them who has probably lost a step in the past year or so, who's deep ball can rightfully be questioned, and who will also likely be going early and often to his Gronk security blanket, a guy who he's already got chemistry with. The other problem with selecting either of those guys is that Tampa has so many reliable weapons right now that its very possible the ball gets spread around to multiple guys in the game, and you just don't know how often Godwin and Evans are really going to get the ball. Its a match made in heaven if you want to pick up Brady as a QB2, but I'd be hesitant pulling the trigger on Evans or Godwin as my WR1. You don't know who Brady will/won't develop a rapport with.

Saquon is the focal point of NY's offense, and Hopkins is going to the NFL's equivalent of the Air Raid in Arizona. However much he got the ball in Houston, he'll get it more in Arizona. And he'll be Murray's clear #1 guy.

It seems increasingly like your preparation should consist of finding a new fantasy game to play. Maybe subconsciously that's why you brought up Dungeons and Dragons?

1. Its Barklet and Godwin for me.  Brady loves the slot.

2. Never understood the appeal of names like that.  I change my team name every week to mock whoever my opponent is.

3.  Been playing fantasy football for 24 years.  I have done dynasty league with contracts, a few friends have also.  Someone always finds a way to game the system and its a ton of work to have it ruined like that, so never again.

4. Your friend is right.  Who cares.

Question 1: Answer:   Go with the chalk, Barkley and Hopkins.

Question 2 answer:  CumSoMuchIPhillipRivers  .      Warnerb4YouFaulk.   Tittsburgh Feelers

Question 3 answer :   The only somewhat dynasty league I've done is an auction keeper league where you can keep as many players as you want but you have to add $5 auction dollars to the player each year to keep him.  Free agents picked up can be kept at market value going into the draft..  So I guess the answer is no to your question, but I am just throwing that out there as a possibility if you don't end up doing a deep dynasty.

Question 4 answer:  what your work pal said is something that was said about 20 years ago for people that play fantasy football.  Not even close to the case anymore.  Tell him/her to get with the times

3. I've been in the same ten team dynasty league for 20 years. Half of the original owners are still around, team ownership transfers are rare. It's complex, occasionally demanding way too much attention, and undeniably awesome. It has deepened my enjoyment of the NFL immeasurably.

The things I like best about it, in no particular order:

-the annual auction draft, always epic, always with fights over rule changes

-the way the long-term contracts encourage you to invest yourself as a fan in certain players. I had Megatron his entire career, and have had Le'veon for all of his so far, and I loved watching them both dominate.

-the way it encourages continued, regular connection between old and new friends who have moved across the country.

I also like the monetary aspect; a championship season along with some weekly wins & individual mvp awards can yield over a thousand bucks. Our league has lots of small cash prizes (and fines/fees) throughout the season.

A few things that make our league unique:

-We separate defense and special teams (ST has its own spot in the starting lineup.) It's often pretty random but I like it.

-For the first couple years, we had a head coach slot in the starting lineup. That was admittedly ridiculous.

-One guy wanted to be in the league so badly, he bought his buddy's franchise for $100 I think.

I think the key to these types of leagues succeeding is having a core group of geeked-out dudes you enjoy competing against, who genuinely want to engage and win. Also a committed and fair commissioner to steer the ship.
