OT: Even Auburn is tired of UGA's last minute surprise recruiting!
Apparently, Auburn was expecting long time verbal 5-star WR George Pickens to sign today, but instead he signed with Georgia. This was such a surprise that Bart Simmons (247 crootin guru) said he was floored, and it seems on par with Isaiah Wilson a couple years ago. Some Auburn players are tweeting that AU should start paying more because everyone else is doing it. LOL!!
Here's the link to the 247 story...
SEC gonna SEC
February 6th, 2019 at 6:24 PM ^
Huh, that's interesting.
February 6th, 2019 at 6:29 PM ^
Pickens smartly consulted Glassdoor before making this career move.
February 6th, 2019 at 7:40 PM ^
Indeed just to make sure he was LinkedIn to everything!
February 6th, 2019 at 8:57 PM ^
that was a monster of a joke
February 6th, 2019 at 10:16 PM ^
Nice!!!
Kirby was able to get in there fast, at the last second, what I would call a Zip Recruiter.
February 7th, 2019 at 12:33 AM ^
Indeed he is!
February 6th, 2019 at 9:25 PM ^
And Auburn gets zip after all that recruiting
February 6th, 2019 at 6:30 PM ^
Paying more?? So they admit they were paid to go to Auburn and are mad a better player got paid more money at another school??
February 6th, 2019 at 6:46 PM ^
Yes, you're getting it. Kind of.
February 7th, 2019 at 2:53 PM ^
Fuck the NCAA. It would be a relatively easy investigation that could catch these fucks red-handed but they just let it continue unabated.
February 6th, 2019 at 6:31 PM ^
Don't taunt Auburn. That's the school that came up with $180K to get Cam Newton. They can and will pay more of necessary.
February 6th, 2019 at 6:34 PM ^
"Technically" that $ was given to his daddy....so it was legal by SEC/NCAA standards....
February 6th, 2019 at 6:44 PM ^
Unless you’re a basketball player for Kansas. Then they drop the hammer on you
February 6th, 2019 at 7:11 PM ^
It was legal because Boise St was on the verge of ending up in the NC if Newton was declared ineligible. Those were the days when a G5 team would sit around 4th in the poll and stick there. Now they can't take that chance. UCF is the new Boise. Now they stick the G5 team outside the top 10 to make sure they don't get within arms reach of the playoff.
February 7th, 2019 at 10:52 AM ^
Yes, but neither UCF nor Boise St has ever deserved a shot at the title. If you're going to play that schedule, you can't really complain.
February 6th, 2019 at 8:36 PM ^
if the auburn faithful are bitching about bagmen, imagine how much more UGA dropped to nab this kid??!! Must be more than $180k
February 7th, 2019 at 1:40 AM ^
That was a f'n bargain.
February 6th, 2019 at 7:43 PM ^
You have now entered....
February 6th, 2019 at 6:40 PM ^
Stories like this remind me of the SB Nation article from a few years back about football bag men. I wonder what the going rate for a 5 star is these days??
February 6th, 2019 at 6:47 PM ^
Usually around 60-80K.
February 6th, 2019 at 8:12 PM ^
Seems like a worthwhile investment to me.
February 6th, 2019 at 9:21 PM ^
Absolutely. For the millions they bring in ticket sales, merch, TV revenue and championships....that's a superb ROI.
February 7th, 2019 at 10:48 AM ^
Now they can enter the transfer portal every year to get themselves back in touch with the bag men. 80K a year for 4 years as a 18-22 year old is a hell of a gig.
February 6th, 2019 at 8:52 PM ^
I'm always surprised how little money these guys get from boosters and the like in the grand scheme of things. You could basically sign a whole class of 5* kids for the same price they paid Pep Hamilton this season. You know, the kids who actually play football and win games for the coaches.
So as always, pay the players.
February 7th, 2019 at 7:04 PM ^
Do you fire them when they sit out, or just ask for a refund?
February 6th, 2019 at 9:09 PM ^
I'm sure we could raise that much with a kickstarter.
February 6th, 2019 at 9:22 PM ^
We easily had that amount for Ace. Hes not even a 5* ;)
February 7th, 2019 at 12:06 AM ^
He is in my heart.
February 6th, 2019 at 9:52 PM ^
This shit makes my skin crawl. Fuck college football. Giant sham. NFL is boss. College football sucks the big one.
February 6th, 2019 at 10:04 PM ^
I will attend Homecoming to be with my buds, but follow UM and any other college games for the entire season is a shit show worthless of watching going forward.
College football is a farce.
February 6th, 2019 at 10:20 PM ^
OK, I am an old shit spotting off. But I just asked my 23 year old son who is a UM grad. What do you guys think about college ball? He said "college football is rigged and teams cheat, so why would anyone watch that shit" ... He and his UM friends don't even watch UM games live saving their watch time for the NFL all day Sunday which they view as "pure competition".
February 6th, 2019 at 10:46 PM ^
More Michigan tickets for me...
February 7th, 2019 at 11:03 PM ^
Clarence - a college football ticket is like toilet paper. The SEC teams buy players and the rest of the schools who don't will suck forever. Why watch any college team. Cheer all you want but the whole thing is rigged. Ain't no way teams that don't pay big money for 5-stars do jack shit. Michigan ain't EVER going to beat Bama or Georgia or any of the other BagMen schools.
The NFL is pure. Pays for it's players and competes on an even playing field. College football sucks in my opinion. I love Michigan but hate college football.
February 7th, 2019 at 7:43 AM ^
It’s good to make generalizations based off small sample sizes and personal beliefs.
February 7th, 2019 at 1:18 PM ^
Did you just claim that the NFL is pure and not corrupt? That has to be the most naive and moronic comments I have read on this blog. No doubt that the talent level in the NFL is better but the product is boring and devoid of excitement from my viewpoint.
For someone who hates college football you sure have posted many comments relating to said subject.
February 7th, 2019 at 7:16 AM ^
Why the hell are you on this blog???
BTW, I suggest you find a new team to support, we will be fine without you. Have a happy life.
February 7th, 2019 at 9:12 AM ^
You could make a case that the NFL is as well.
February 7th, 2019 at 10:58 AM ^
You are welcome to leave if it offends you so much.
February 7th, 2019 at 12:14 PM ^
Man. That's cheap. Way below market value for what these guys bring. I would've guess much more.
February 6th, 2019 at 7:03 PM ^
Any baseball connections at Michigan? All UM needs to do is have some of their top players get drafted and get a nice little signing bonus and then they come to UM to play football. Perfectly fine in the eyes of the NCAA.
February 6th, 2019 at 7:15 PM ^
Kirby $mart learned out of the Nick $aban playbook.
February 6th, 2019 at 8:30 PM ^
True, but Tenne$$ee is the new high bidder in town.
February 6th, 2019 at 8:59 PM ^
higher than Mi$$i$$ippi $tate?
February 6th, 2019 at 9:40 PM ^
good gosh no kidding. I want to see their final bill this year
February 7th, 2019 at 7:39 AM ^
C'mon now guys, why so cynical?
Is it really so difficult to believe that a team that finished at 5-7, with a 2-6 division record (good for dead last in the "weaker" SEC east), can simply hire one of Saban's disciples (who I'm sure learned many above-board tactics from Saban) and cleanly, ethically, and suddenly start attracting tons of blue chip players?
February 6th, 2019 at 7:56 PM ^
Not hard to believe. One of my customers/friends is a big LSU alum. Very close with Devonta Lee's family and helped Orgeron recruit him.
They were shocked shocked on Sopser too. He indicated Sopser's family got $200,000 over 3 years. I know LSU is not pristine, but GA and TN have upped the price recently and it looks like Alabama is matching them.
Take it with for what it is worth, but he is very dialed in.
February 6th, 2019 at 8:33 PM ^
I don't think anyone with a brain can disagree with what you heard. Georgia came out of nowhere the second Kirby got there and signed historic classes. Now Tennessee is starting to snake recruits from Georgia. That doesn't happen without a bigger check.
February 6th, 2019 at 7:58 PM ^
My guess is that the NCAA will swing its mighty hammer of justice and put the UC Santa Cruz women's rugby team on double secret probation.
February 6th, 2019 at 8:24 PM ^
I don't even think they'll do that! I suspect that nothing will come of this. Nothing. Won't even pick up a phone to call and ask about what might be going on.
I mean, the SEC/NCAA let Auburn win a national championship because they first won an acknowledged bidding war for Cam Newton. UNC doesn't need to send it players to a real class. UL, Kansas, and Arizona are still playing basketball. The NCAA is a cess pool...
