OT: English Premier Returns

Submitted by uncle leo on

I know it doesn't have the same impact as the return of football (American), but there is something so warming and comfortable to be able to turn on the TV on weekends with a cup of joe and watch Prem league.

Curious to see how Man U does with some new management at the helm and if LC can keep up nearly the level they had last season.

Brad Guzan (USMNT keeper) is on Middlesborough (looks like Victor Valdes is the starter).

Geoff Cameron was on the bench for Stoke.

Deandre Yedlin is technically on Tottenham, but maybe loaned out again this year (to Sunderland again?).

That's it.  The rest of the guys are in Germany.

Have followed Manchester United since the mid 1990s after a trip to the UK.  No real reason...except they weren't Arsenal (my brother and a good friend of his are fans).

In General you want one that will likely stay in the Premier League as it gets really tough to follow teams in the lower divisions, which boils down to the ever- presents: The two Manchesters if you want to sell your soul, Chelsea if you like cheering on money, Liverpool if you want a glorious history with little to show for it recently, Arsenal if you like stylish, flowing, creative soccer managed by Skeletors French cousin who's just as evil, Everton if you want to be perennially frustrated by a well put together team that doesn't have quite enough money to get over the top, and finally Tottenham if you really like torturing yourself with just barely met expectations and spectacular collapses to the Red Shite across town. I'm a Tottenham fan for the record and what got to me was I liked their style of play, their history and team culture is fun and I liked they have a team strategy built around young talent, a lot of it British. So my actual recommendation is look into the team, find out its history, style of play, players, and overall fan culture and you'll eventually find one that speaks to you.

Being a LIVERPOOL fan I likened the Klopp signing to Harbaugh. He will demand greatness he will find his guys and they will work tirelessly. I just hope the LFC fans give him time the community connection to Klopp is not what Harbaugh has at Michigan

He has used the phrase "If we can be 1% better then we were from yesterday" and he keeps using its all about the team, the team. Also has used the phrase if you can't cheer for us when we are losing then don't cheer for us when we are winning. Another phrase he has used that is similar is, Changing from doubters to believers. That we can win at any moment.

He has taken low level players and made them into super stars. He left Borussia Dortumnd because of his attitude, sound familar? But when he left, the starting 11 was bought from free to 4 million. His 2 famous signing are lewandowski and Reus. Both were bought at an average of 4 million and those 2 are now worth over 80 million.  Unlike Jose Mourinho or Pep, Klopp doesn't throw money around and will never spend more then 40 million. I think Sane Mane is the most he's spent on players and that was 30 million this past year.

This is histarical to me because as a Manchester United fan, I liken ManU to Michigan (proven winner as manager) and Liverpool to MSU (huuuuuuuge chip on their shoulder and seriously pissed about all the ManU disrespekt).

You may want to take a glance at teams in other leagues as well.  The EPL gets a lot of hype and has a lot of expensive players, but whether the quality of play is really the best, I'm not so sure.

I have a friend from Germany who is a big Dortmund fan.  They play in an 80,000-seat stadium that is always sold out and the atmosphere at their games (especially in the "Yellow Wall" ultra section) is incredible.

EPL is the highest quality soccer IMO, and easy for Americans to get into. Hard to get used to not knowing the teams or players, but it's only a 2 hour commitment including halftime and there are so few commercials.

I've followed Man U the last three seasons. I've got terrible sports luck so of course they have sucked.

Random hoodie seen at end of Everton/Tottenham. Says Michigan at top with crossed field hockey sticks and what appears to be a Notre Dame logo in the middle. Anyone able to identify this?

AFC Bournemouth - who?

Arsenal - Pretty much the team version of Mesut Ozil. Pretty good, not great enough to respect though. And just looks like you want to punch them in the face.

Burnley - who?

Chelsea - there is just something off about them.

Crystal Palace - most American of the teams. Red White and Blue. Bad at soccer but thinks they are good. Also probably racist.

Everton - Maybe. Like this team more than any others probably. Ross Barkley is cool. Getting rid of Stones was not. No more Tim Howard either. Meh.

Hull City - Was once told I should like this team because they are the Tigers and I am from Detroit. Last time I checked that's not how you pick a team. Cool kits this year tho.

Leicester City - Don't wanna jump on a bandwagon. Didn't watch them enough last season. And they are going to finish outside the top 10 this year so whatever.

Liverpool - I hate liver I guess? No feelings. Some good midfielders from Brazil can make the otherwise boring play exciting for a second.

Manchester City - Pretentious imo.

Manchester United - Love watching their skill on display. Martial and Ibrahimovic are awesome. Hate Rooney. LOVE LOVE LOVE watching these guys fail in spectacular fashion.

Middlesbrough - Who?

Southampton - Who?

Stoke City - Boring

Sunderland - Boring + no more Yedlin (at this time)

Swansea City - Gave them a shot last season. Disappointed in the product.

Tottenham Hotspur - Harry Kane is cool. Kits are nice enough. Maybe Yedlin plays one of the LB/RB positions this season. That'd be cool I guess. Use to hate them from Video Gaming in the past.

Watford - fart noise

West Bromwich Albion - who?

Anyone got a pitch to sell? COYS? Will Everton ever be able to reward my fandom?

Tottenham and Crystal Palace. No idea why. CP seems to be a pretty solid program in the Prem, and Tottenham is always sniffing the top 3 or 4. Hope to see them break through this season.

Maybe just as they were coming off relegation? I can't recall. Anyway, my reasoning for it? I liked the name. It was the nickname used for NORAD in one of my favorite movies of all time, Wargames.

So...yeah. That's why I picked them. I didn't even know a thing about their players, coach, logo, uniforms, colors, etc. Just went by the name.

So, what the hell. Two years later, I'm still a CP fan (and know a little more about them now, too). ;-)

Yeah, soccer is really a year round sport. The EPL and the other European leagues start their official games in August which goes all the way until May. When you add the games from the UEFA Europa Leage, Champions Leage, and National Team games, they play a large number of games. And then in the even numberd years in June you get the World Cup or the EURO's.

So unkike Americal Football, "Futbol" really is nonstop and if you are a soccer crazed person who can never get enough, its heaven.
