OT: Dad's Birthday/UM Stadium Tour

Submitted by phork on

Yes, my Pops is a die hard UM fan. I plan on taking him on the UM Stadium tour in August.  Is there anything else you guys might suggest we look into doing that day?  Tour is at 10AM is about 90mins.  So looking for a traditional UM restaurant for lunch and then something else afterward?  Any tips would be appreciated, I figured I would come to the experts. Thanks!

either way, it's almost something like a rite of passage, or at least on a "Things to do in Ann Arbor" checklist.

Like, I'm not a vodka drinker, but if I go to Russia I'll be trying a lot of Russian vodka. Same with going up in skyscrapers in Chicago: the experience is close to the same being in the Hancock or the Sears (Willis) but if I'm taking friends from out of town, I'll pick the Sears every time. That might be weird and it might serve little to no purpose, but that's the way I look at it.

If you are in town for dinner you should hit up Gratzi.  That seems like an appropriate place to celebrate a birthday.  Pretty f'ing good Italian food.

There's a decent chance that you'll see a U of M athlete dining there.... possibly even someone recognizeable.  I'm sure that your dad would get a kick out of that.

Should go without saying.... but let them peacefully enjoy there lunch.

Check out Sport's Memorabilia on E. Liberty St.

Has TONS and TONS of old Michigan memorabilia. Programs from every decade, vintage Rose Bowl gear. So much amazing things explaining it doesn't do it justice. It's underground so you have to walk down a stariwell to see it.

I just had a tour for my birthday last week. It was the best thing I ever did. Got a picture next to the Little Brown Jug and Desmond's Heisman in the East side suites. You'll see it. You won't regret spending the money.

If he hasn't been here in awhile (or at all) keep him on Main Street.  It's nearby the stadium with plenty of parking.  There are plenty of awesome restaurants and beer-holes to satisfy anyone.  From Palio to Grazi's, Middle Kingdom to Shalimar, West End Grill to Real Seafood, Grizzly Peak to Blue Tractor... All are excellent for both service and food.

Enjoy the day with your Dad - Go Blue!

Get him a haircut/shave at one of the barber shops on state (coach and four or state street barbershop). Maybe grab lunch at Mr Spots. I love Zingermann's but it's more of a Ann Arbor thing as opposed to a UofM thing. Pick any of the nicer Main St restaurants for dinner (Gratzi, Real Seafood, Palio's). Arbor Brewing is a bit more laid back and may be a better option depending on what you're looking for

Convenience. Trying to get a tour through the Alumni Association is nearly impossible.

It's the day after home games only. So that is six sundays. Might work if you live in the area, but otherwise not. Plus there will be more than your group. My tour was private. Private tours= better pictures.

If you need someone to go in on the private tour with you let me know. I've been wanting to do this for a while and this would give me an excuse.
