OT - Colin Kaepernick & 'Similar QBs' (2006 Recruiting Class content)
So, having recently moved out to the Bay Area, and getting through the process of acclimating to West Coast football coverage, I was trying to look up information on the background of Nevada's excellent QB, Colin Kaepernick. The first thing I found was a recruiting profile from Rivals, and I wanted to share a little chuckle I had, when, off to the side, in the 'Similar QB's' list, I saw the face of one, David Cone! Both were apparently 3 star pocket passer prospects. One has put up ridiculous Run/Pass numbers, and one saw mop-up duty against Baby Seal U.
sometimes, recruiters really get it wrong.

The analysts sure got that one wrong. No one can spit hot fire the like the Coner!
Also, FYI the similar players thing changes randomly so I don't see Coner when I click on the link even though you might have...

been highly recruited if coaches weren't afraid that he was going to go to professional baseball. After all, he got drafted pretty high in baseball. Kapernick wanted to play football and coaches didn't believe him, thinking that he'll take the money. Ault reluctantly offerred him a scholarship and Nevada never looked back since then. Kapernick has the talent to be a BCS type D1 QB.

You've got it.
I'm not sure whether Coner could throw a 90mph fastball:

interesting about the baseball thing. didn't know that. seems like it would be hard for a 6'4 mobile QB to slip through th cracks like that, but, hey, great for nevada. He's kinda like this year's Dan Lefevour.

the fact that he was drafted high is what scaring people away. They thought that he would play MLB instead of going to college to play football. They didn't missed him, they simply didn't believe Kaepernick was going to play football.

I would say that quite a bit of recruiters get it wrong. Look at Omameh, Rivals had him as a 2-star recruit, but he is doing pretty well as OG this year as a RS sophomore. That is why one should not read into star rating too much.

I thought Pat White was the reason that we should not read anything into star ratings!

david harris is why we shouldn't read anything into star ratings...

The fact that Omameh only weighed 230 as a HS senior had a lot to do with that. By and large, the recruiting gurus get it right. OL may be the hardest position to predict.

Wow - he was a good student.

Safe to say, the majority of the time, kids with higher star numbers make the bigger wakes in College even though there are some anomolies.

I read in Bruce Feldman's excellent book on college recruiting "Meat Market", the public subscription services are not used by the coaches for any substantive evaluation. They are used for comparitive analysis of buzz.
The coaches use way more expensive services with really skilled football people behind them to decide on who to focus on.
Rivals and Scout are way ahead of most of us, but they are just a start for all of us to figure out who is who. Sometimes they are a very good start, sometimes not. You guys are right.
Great book.
