OT: Coastal Carolina-BYU: Game of the Year

Submitted by Qmatic on December 5th, 2020 at 8:59 PM

For the past 3 1/2 hours we witnessed a football game which reminds us what college football is all about. I have not seen two teams compete at the level I saw these two teams compete today. You would have thought this was Michigan-OSU or The Iron Bowl with how chippy it was.

Absolute respect to both BYU and Coastal Carolina’s programs and Administration. These teams were pretty much guaranteed undefeated regular seasons. Instead of taking that, they agreed to play each other just 48 hours prior to kickoff.

It was great to watch these two teams compete. Zach Wilson is a baller, and the Chanticleers could possibly pave their way to being the new Boise St.

Very impressive drive by BYU to even have a shot at scoring at the end of the game.  Michigan wouldn't have even made it to their own 30, but I digress.

I have no idea what Jamey Chadwell's life/coach story is but I would have to imagine he just put himself squarely in the coaching carousel this off-season.

Care to elaborate on that?

He's  a two-time FCS National Coach of the Year finalist and three-time Big South Coach of the Year. He led the Charleston Southern to two conference titles, as well as the NCAA Division I FCS Championship Playoffs twice.

He's 43. A former quarterback and super cerebral.  He slapped together a bunch of misfits and cast offs including a 5'9" center and a 3 star QB that could go in the second round, and just outplayed a legitimate 9-0 top 15 ranked team - mostly in the trenches.

The Chanticleers are for real.

Talk about a guy that is doing more with less. While he might be an SEC guy I'd love to hear the nature of these 'red flags galore'

I mean, you can just check out his Wikipedia page which highlights the key issues.  Here's the relevant parts:

In 2018, the NCAA released a detailed report concerning numerous NCAA violations that occurred during Chadwell’s tenure as the CSU head football coach. The violations ranged from using multiple ineligible players to players using scholarship funds to purchase electronics and jewelry from the campus book store. Ultimately, the NCAA sanctions vacated 18 wins from the 2014 and 2015 seasons and the 2015 Big South Championship. Also vacated were three wins over crosstown rival The Citadel, games during which CSU used ineligible players.

Again, I'm all for giving people second chances but that happened 2 years ago and Michigan isn't going to touch a guy with such significant and recent sanctions.  And honestly, I wouldn't blame them.

Maybe your math is different than mine but if the incidents occurred in 2015 wouldn't that make it 5 years ago, not 2?

And again if you peel back the layer of the onion the problem was much more of a Charleston Southern issue than poor Jamey Chadwell ethics.

They had incidents dating back to 2011 long before Chadwell got there. They had 55 athletes commit violations across 12 sports.  They forfeited basketball and softball titles as well.

The football team also played in the 2016 championship game that wasn't vacated.

Also after the violations were made public a new AD was brought in to clean house and didn't remove Chadwell.

One prof. cost the school 1o mil on a ponzi scheme. The shenanigans at CSU are far more a systemic issue than on Chadwell.

The NCAA ruling came down in 2018, so that (to me at least) is the number people will remember.  Yes, the violations occurred in 2014 and 2015, but I sorta doubt that distinction matters to a ton of people.  My point is he didn't break some rules in 2005 and has had a spotless record since.

You seem to know more about the inner workings of Coastal Carolina than I do, so if it's truly the case that he was a victim of circumstance so be it.  I'd argue that if you're the HC at a program and violations go on for a couple of years while you're there, that's on you, even if they started before you showed up.  And an AD keeping around a winning football coach while "cleaning house" of other, less-important people isn't uncommon.

Regardless, a jump from CSU to UM isn't in the cards, and the fact we're trying to parse out the culpability of someone when there are dozens of equal or better-qualified individuals without this baggage is why it won't happen.

If I may say this as both a fan and alumnus, I think that part of the problem in the past - when we've been faced with having to make changes - is this idea of it being a "distinguished job" that demands people of some requisite character very difficult to find in the most competitive circles of Division I Football. Ours is a great job, and it is still potentially a destination job for someone, but we have to be careful with words like "distinguished" because the implied stuffiness is perhaps going to impose limits on the thinking of some and unnecessarily at that.

Now, I wouldn't have even thought Chadwell for a lot of other reasons, but what I am trying to get away from here is the tired old train of thought that could be problematic if we do in fact find ourselves looking for a new coach at some point.

Enough ignorant negging of BigMeech.  I mentioned Chadwell awhile back as a potential candidate BECAUSE of his widely known ability to run a dirty program (Dirty program vastly superior to clean program).  My parents are Coastal baseball season ticket holders and have been for years (World Series was a fun year) and live a few minutes from campus, so I tend to follow the school.  The guy is an interesting coach if you want to go football factory.

I agree it is a 0% chance he is the new M coach, but lay off Meech as he is correct.

"I have not seen two teams compete at the level I saw these two teams compete today."

Hyperbole much? It was a good game. But game of the year? Iron Bowl/The Game level chippiness?

Man. Talk about a prisoner of the moment. I think a good amount of fans present, bringing energy, also has a lot to do with the perception of that particular game.

Haven’t seen the highlights yet.  Was busy watching Cal upset Oregon.

ROLL ON YOU BEARS!!!!

edit: Tightwad Hill is relatively unknown. But is one of the best places in the United States to watch a football game for free.

The Chanticleers are just another Sun Belt team having a great season due to a coach who knows how to run a football team down South with everything that entails. I think a low to mid-tier SEC job is the natural follow-up for a guy like that. Other than that? Nothing to see here. Other than the fact that it feels like the more redneck-ish Covidiot-driven a school is that the better they will do this year. With some of the teams it feels like the team never fully got on board with playing and as a result there's no team spirit etc. Covid might also only be a part of that. I somehow feel like we probably only know about 20% of what went down between players, coaches and administrators in the summer's racial crisis. With the anti-system, anti-authority bent of the protests, that's gotta have been very awkward in an environment like college football with its power dynamics.

Yeah - saw the two Coastal Carolina guys pounding on the BYU QB. The ref had to break it - yet did not throw a flag. They should have been tossed.
