OT: Cincinnati to hire ex-OSU DC Coombs

Submitted by ThisGuyFawkes on January 18th, 2022 at 12:13 PM

ESPN is reporting that Luke Fickell and Cincinnati are expected to hire Kerry Coombs. I know Coombs has rightfully taken some abuse as not the best on-field coach, but I view this as a net positive for UM and net negative for OSU. Coombs bonafides as a recruiter are unquestioned, and now that guy will be recruiting against OSU in its own backyard and has a run of recent success including this year's playoff appearance to help in the sales pitch

yeah. i dont think the bear poking just started. I like that Day is "really" angry now. That's always such a BS card in this rivalry. He was "REALLY angry" at harbaugh last year when he made the comment. Michigan played tough guy against msu a few times with antics... Its unnecessary and to me less is more. Let the fans be the irrational idiots. All the loud mouth stuff to me is chest puffing.

Day should be pissed. But being "super duper pissed" makes me happy because his face might turn the color of Veruca Salt.

Agree with you... The "hang a hundred on you" was, in hindsight, a really bad move,  Hutchinson said your team used that as motivation. I've always been a fan of walking silent carrying a big stick, as opposed to mouthing off and not backing it up (2018 UM, 2021 OSU for example). Hopefully Day learned his lesson this year.

We agree. i found the revenge tour annoying - as soon as you fail, you look like idiots. Say it at the end. Like the 2021 team. I didnt hear much all year. No bulletin board material. Just focus, grinding, and it worked out. It may not always - but if you're not The U and backing it up with ass kicking every week, dont be fake tough.

I could respect urban as a coach, though not as a person... i see nothing admirable about day.  if we beat osu next year, they will be in full blown panic mode.

I admire Day simply because the guy is absolutely not afraid to clean house when position groups aren't performing. Part of Meyer's demise was his loyalty to underperforming positional coaches (Warriner as OC, Davis (his best man at his wedding) at LB, and of course Zach Smith at WR), so it's refreshing to have a coach not scared of shaking things up. With that said, shaking things up doesn't equate to making them better. Another loss to UM and Day's going to need a seat cooler to make him comfortable.

You seem particularly prickly, what is your stance on UM cancelling The Game in 2020? Not saying it was a bad call for your sake, but UM likely would have lost and Harbaugh's tenure as coach would have been even more at risk than it was all of last offseason. Posit that Day would've been 2-0 against UM this year (possibly without Harbaugh as a result)... And you're calling Day John Cooper 2.0?

Can't wait for November this year in Columbus.

Good move for Cincinnati. He's an elite recruiter to my understanding, and while he wasn't really cut out to be a DC, he sure could coach corners. He sent plenty of guys into the first round. A lot of them were highly touted recruits already so that helped, but they still had to be coached.

With Cincy making a move to the Big XII before too long, I'd love to see someone instate who can start being a thorn in OSU's side and maybe plucking a recruit or two every year that they'd otherwise want to have in their ranks.

There’s a difference between being a bad on-field coach and being a bad DC. The guy coached quite a few first round CBs and production fell way off when he left the first time. He’ll be great for Cincy and I hope he retires in the position he’s in. He’s a Cincinnati HS coaching legend so it’s nice that he’s back in his old stomping grounds.

We’d actually have to start recruiting Ohio a bit more aggressively for us to lose recruits.   One of my disappointments is how poorly we recruit Ohio.

UC will recruit better in Ohio both base on its past couple year success plus adding Coombs won’t hurt - unless they make him DC.

I hope Fickell never ends up coaching in columbus.... I can't dislike the guy.  he seems like a decent guy and a good coach, he just doesn't fit the ohio state coaching criteria.....   he's not a sleazy scumball..... shit stain of a human being..... and that's what they look for in their coaches.

When UC is recruiting well, they can be a huge thorn in Michigan State's side, as they target a lot of the same Midwestern high-3 star athletes. Hopefully this helps their efforts!
