Of course he is. Because of course...
January 18th, 2021 at 5:26 PM ^
Basically my exact reaction....
January 18th, 2021 at 5:38 PM ^
Literally the only thing I can think of is that he thinks he can be like a top ~3 receiver in next year's draft since this class has Smith, Waddle, Chase, etc. because this literally doesn't make sense. He was mocked in the 1st and 2nd round everywhere
January 18th, 2021 at 6:51 PM ^
Yea, he turned down $10M+ to get a few booster handshakes. Comment makes perfect sense...
January 18th, 2021 at 8:11 PM ^
They have a better "team" culture than we do, I don't know why people can't just recognize that. As said above, booster money makes zero sense.
January 19th, 2021 at 3:57 AM ^
Don't forget O$U is a billion dollar franchise.
Ohio State has actually developed a culture where you can build a career as a professional Ohioan. Look at Griffin, Spielman, the Boron brothers, et al.
There is a lot more money involved at that level than they are given credit for.
January 19th, 2021 at 6:48 AM ^
Wasn't the rumor $300,000 per game at clemson?
January 19th, 2021 at 8:48 AM ^
The cash bullshit gets really old.
He would get drafted and sign for millions, it's impossible that some kids like the college life.
January 19th, 2021 at 11:14 AM ^
However if you do have some nice spending money at that age it could certainly make it easier to postpone your big pay day. You can then take the luxury of trying to play yourself up and accomplish some personal and team goals.
January 18th, 2021 at 7:01 PM ^
It also indicates that whoever is replacing Fields is going to be legit. He wouldn’t risk coming back if he thought the QB was going to be shaky.
January 18th, 2021 at 8:39 PM ^
Their 3 year starting left tackle came back for another year and so did Ruckert (TE). They have the number one HS running back coming in. Their offense should be good as long as the qb isn't a total dud.
Their defense should have the same struggles though.
January 19th, 2021 at 5:35 PM ^
This is my exact thought. He isn’t coming back if he doesn’t believe the QB next year can deliver and improve his draft stock. Same with Ruckert. They both have seen who is going to be throwing the football to them in practice and said “yeah, I’ll do well coming back”. Fair to assume there won’t be a huge drop off after Fields.
January 18th, 2021 at 5:27 PM ^
Wow, pretty sure osu fans had him at about 99% chance of leaving.
I don’t think they lose any receivers and they have the best receiving class coming in as freshmen.
Must be nice.
January 18th, 2021 at 6:24 PM ^
Maybe it pushes one or two of them out the transfer portal.
January 18th, 2021 at 6:45 PM ^
And the receivers in the class before, Fleming njigbe Smith, were top 5 receivers too
January 18th, 2021 at 10:08 PM ^
The NFL officially canceled the Combine today. Might've factored into him going back to Online Sports University.
January 18th, 2021 at 5:29 PM ^
I would come back to play Michigan's dbs again too..it sure as hell won't hurt his draft stock next year
January 18th, 2021 at 5:29 PM ^
Whyyyyyyyyyyy?????
January 18th, 2021 at 5:32 PM ^
Lots of good receivers in the draft this year. Probably wants to get his degree and show out for next year.
January 18th, 2021 at 5:31 PM ^
Why take a pay cut?
Edit: hopefully our players are receiving just compensation
January 18th, 2021 at 5:31 PM ^
Quelle Surprise
January 18th, 2021 at 5:31 PM ^
Just as I was starting to come to grips with the Charbonnet news this drops...ffs
January 18th, 2021 at 5:32 PM ^
I saw jeremy ruckert (TE) is coming back too
January 18th, 2021 at 5:51 PM ^
Also. LT Thayer Munford who most thought was gone. They - along with Clemson - sure seem to get a lot of star players to return.
January 18th, 2021 at 6:27 PM ^
Hint - it's not for free.
January 18th, 2021 at 6:41 PM ^
Always love this logic... turn down millions in the NFL to come back their senior year, get a degree, and (hopefully) improve there draft position for next year. But yeah... they chose to return to OSU for money. My god you must have an IQ somewhere between 1 and 5. You're intellectually lazy my man.
January 18th, 2021 at 6:52 PM ^
Good for him if that is his motivation. And a testament to his confidence in Day. He’ll be catching balls from a new QB next year. He has already achieved more than DPJ and Nico, yet they both bolted. That’s a testament to Harbaugh.
January 18th, 2021 at 7:19 PM ^
Logic huh?
So as a presumed buckeye fan, you always come to this Michigan blog, insult the posters and call them stupid, show your ignorance and still come back? You really show how smart you are while we all have a good laugh at the pussy trying to be smart.
January 18th, 2021 at 8:13 PM ^
How did he "show his ignorance"? The kid could have gone in the draft, he would definitely get drafted. He gave up money to come back. I respect that, as should all college football "fans".
January 18th, 2021 at 10:29 PM ^
"Presumed Buckeye fan".... I have an avatar of an OSU helmet. You're just too perceptive for me to even have a dialogue with... I'll just forfeit now. You win!
January 18th, 2021 at 7:24 PM ^
Much easier to turn down millions of dollars when you already have a nice income... but sure, feel free to believe they're foregoing millions of dollars to get that OSU degree and marginally improve their draft stock while not making a penny
January 18th, 2021 at 9:15 PM ^
Lighten up, Officer Francis.
January 18th, 2021 at 10:22 PM ^
Sorry Rob... I typically enjoy the discussion and opinions on this blog, hence the reason I peruse it from time to time. But the lazy, "OSU just pays players" sentiment, in the face of overwhelming logic that Olave would inarguably be making millions next year... is a head-scratcher. I mean... it's just a really lazy statement.. and some people here lap it up. Look at The Deer Hunter's response... sheesh.
January 19th, 2021 at 8:08 AM ^
Are you honestly someone who believes that OSU isn't "bending" the benefits rule in Football? I sure hope you respond. I will love to have this discussion.
January 19th, 2021 at 11:29 PM ^
Not at all... I think every major college program "bends the rules".. take that as you may. But the implication was Olave stayed because OSU was paying him... when he could literally be a millionaire in the next couple of months. That, quite literally, is a trash argument.. not sure how anyone can make it in good faith. It's born from sour grapes and frustration that UM players seem to bolt as soon as possible.
I had no malice in my reply.. just calling out a really stupid post.
January 18th, 2021 at 11:20 PM ^
Just stop Rabbit. Makes UM fans look like Dicks
January 18th, 2021 at 5:33 PM ^
Makes absolutely no sense. Whoever is giving him advice is absolutely not looking out for him because he is pretty much a lock for a 1st or 2nd round pick.
January 18th, 2021 at 5:54 PM ^
Yeah, but a really deep WR draft this year. Hate to see that kid return. Him and Wilson will be a total nightmare for defenses next year. Heck, they were this year
January 18th, 2021 at 5:33 PM ^
OSU next bevy of five star WR trying to step up and have their turn and Chris Olave goes...
January 18th, 2021 at 5:36 PM ^
He didn't do jack shit against Alabama because their DC wasn't stupid enough to cover him 1:1 without a safety over the top and they physically mauled his little ass from the line if scrimmage. Dr. Blitz should have watched this game. Football has changed since Don Brown coached Abraham Lincoln at Springfield High School
January 18th, 2021 at 5:55 PM ^
Well that made me laugh
January 18th, 2021 at 6:19 PM ^
I think Surtain pretty much covered him 1 on 1 all day.
January 18th, 2021 at 7:00 PM ^
lol, i believe before the playoffs i said bama WR's would torch OSU's secondary and you decided to say i was a dumbfuck that should stay in my parents basement or some bullshit and go play xbox..
You then proceeded to say OSU wr's would stomp all over bama's defense.. Neither of which happened.
You never cease to amaze me with the idiotic posts scfan
January 18th, 2021 at 10:56 PM ^
That was a good one. LOL
January 18th, 2021 at 5:36 PM ^
No need to go pro when you're already on the payroll
January 18th, 2021 at 5:43 PM ^
When you pay players to come you can also pay them not to leave....
January 18th, 2021 at 5:46 PM ^
Son of a bitch. They have the right culture I'm sorry to say.
January 18th, 2021 at 5:52 PM ^
^^^ This is the answer.
January 19th, 2021 at 8:18 AM ^
It's hard to argue with the fact the kids like to hang around in some instances. I also find these statements without an inquisitive question about what is different.
I'd propose the fact that school is really not much of an interference, they get treated like royalty, they most certainly receive benefits and they can train like a professional athlete for another year with coaching and trainin gon par with the NFL experience.
So, is it culture? Culture screams camaraderie, being there for your brother, the entire college experience is celebrated, etc. I'd ask you to go watch a big college basketball game and see if you see a collection of their stars in the student section. You won't. It's a business and run as such.
