OT - Chauncy Billups New Coaching Gig

Off Topic for sure, but I thought worthy of posting.  I always thought Chauncy was a class player and person.  Congrats to Chauncy.

In a professional level, that’s a hell of an accomplishment for Billups to be a head coach.

However, a lot of fans are unhappy about this hire. Some don’t think he was a good candidate due to credentials, and others are uncomfortable due to his allegations from back in the day.

Yea I did some reading on that myself, and how they expected Dame to know about that from 1997 is ridiculous. I would bet a lot of 20 year old's don't know about Kobe's situation either.

Don't really get why people try to dig this stuff up on people from 24 years ago. The Blazers mentioned that they took steps to investigate in depth and do their due diligence. Not sure why that isn't enough for people?

Lol have you seen what Portland has been up to over the past year? That place is a shit show up and down, so the fans only reflect the general insanity of the city. (No I’m not a MAGAt)

Great for the Sixers if the backlash forces their best player to leave. They can have Simmons + whoever + picks!

Lmao look through my posting history and say I’m MAGA. I’ll wait bc you can’t find a single thing to indicate it. Try again.

Lastly, The Economist would disagree with everything being fine and dandy in Portland. I will say I did exaggerate by saying shit show and insanity.

What does The Economist say? I live here too, and housing prices continue to skyrocket. Everything's opening up again, even downtown (which I never really spent much time in before anyway), and tourists are coming back (my friends who have Air BnB's are having zero problems finding renters). There's still a major homelessness problem, like any city on the west coast, but I'm really not sure what you're referring to...

And as for Chauncy, yeah, lots of people are upset about the rape allegations and somewhat miffed at Dame for supporting him and not taking a stand on behalf of women. There's a belief that the NBA (and NFL) don't care about domestic violence or rape, which historically is hard to argue is not true. That sort of thing is a national trend (like it or not), and definitely very prevalent here.

This was my thinking. But Pop is gonna be coaching there at least 5 more years probably.

I think Hammon is gone next season. Barring some crazy innovative offense that some team runs that becomes all the rage (think 2004 Suns, Modern-Day Warriors) where all NBA teams poach that staff, Hammon will be the biggest name out there looking for HC work.

Can't disagree with this. When you compare the resumes side-by-side, I don't see how Billups with his single year of coaching experience comes close to making sense over a 7 year coaching vet.

Coincidentally, they both played college ball in CO (CU for Billups, CSU for Hammon) and were both part of the 2015 class of inductees to the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame.

I'm pretty surprised that Hammon wasn't the pick here.

Good for Chauncey, but he's going to have a rough first year coaching Ben Simmons when he thought he'd be getting Dame. I don't trust Nick Olshey to not sandbag his new hire.

Portland is one of the most challenging situations in the league.

-No cap space or wiggle room.

-A decade of low draft picks, trades, and other moves has left the team with no younger talent. Zach Collins and Nasir Little may turn into something, but neither have shown to be great talents yet.

-Their backcourt will be on the wrong age of 30 by the start of the season and occupies a huge chunk of your cap.

-Nurkic is a solid 3rd option but is almost always injured or recovering from injury. He also has clearly lost a bit of his game.

-Youre good enough to make the playoffs, but don’t have enough to truly be a contender.

-Carmello and Powell are great bench guys but can’t be much more than that. Carmello in particular is just about done.

Basically, they are maxed out and have nowhere to go but down. They need to get a legit 3rd option at the 4-5 but would have to give up a major player to get that, leaving a hole elsewhere. As crazy as it sounds, Portland needs to do a tear down and start a rebuild.
