OT: Butch Davis Out at UNC?
Tons of chatter stating that Butch Davis is out at UNC. Not good -- some are jumping to conclusions that the NCAA might be dropping the hammer. Well, Greg Garmon might have one less school to consider (although he has dropped us, apparently).
InsideCarolina
BREAKING NEWS: UNC official would not confirm or deny whether Butch Davis has been fired today.UNC statement: "The chancellor met with the Board of Trustees to discuss the future of the football program today."
They had to fill the void...
In my mind, this is arguably a justifiable result just based on the issues with all those players at the beginning of last season. Davis had to be held accountable for at least a piece of that fiasco - it was very embarassing for UNC to have all those guys ineligible/suspended/etc. I don't think UNC will give much leeway to the football program when it clearly is not the darling of the university (see basketball program).
If this turns out true its obvious just how football is NOT the baby there...firing a coach this close to opening day is crazy
This reminds me of us firing Steve Fisher in October. They, too, will probably have to settle for an Ellerbe-caliber guy.
Any HC candidate outside the program would need to be out of work at the moment and willing to take the gamble that he could actually build a staff this close to fall practices since all those guys would need to leave their respective teams at a terrible time. The easiest would be promoting within the program and backfilling a single assistant position. I don't know what they have on the staff for candidates.
"North Carolina Football: Program Of Consequence"
I was just listening to the Doug Gottlieb show and he said that Bill Cowher is UNCs #1 candidate. Not sure how credible his source, just thought Id pass along the info.
What a nice thought. Cowher has NC ties for years---albeit to the hated Wolfpack--lives in Raleigh--home on Bald Head--daughter at Wofford. Bring that jaw to the Thrill!
First post here guys--my cuz (huge Blue fan) sent me the Davis link--his Pop a grad as is my Mom, so don't crucify me for my signature.
Whatever happens on the field--remember this: Barnes, Zeller, Henson,Marshall = Heels win National Championship--this year.
Love it. Im a huge UNC hoops fan. I know people will give me the evil eye through the computer because I like two diff teams in hoops and football. Dont really care, though. But ya they are loaded. Dont forget to add Mcadoo and Hairston. Ok, that's all from about Carolina hoops. I have to respect what site Im on. Go Blue! lol
Are you delusional and on meth?
Obnoxious? The Cheese and Wine crowd? (Sam Cassell early 90s). Hmmm......
Only folks I've met that say Carolina fans are obnoxious are Duke fans. Have you turned to the dark (blue) side?
Where exactly is Bolivian?
Bolivian was a joke started when the negs counted. Somebody once had "oblivian" autocorrected to "Bolivian", so instead of getting negged to oblivian, people now get negged to Bolivian. As a side note, Profit once got someone released from the purgatory of Bolivian with an epic posbanging thread, hence his signature.
is learned in the lore of the MGoBoard. His tale is true in every detail.
Some people have been sent to Bolivian, even without neg-bombs, with direct mod action. Mods have also incrementally reduced or increased MGoUsers' point totals from time to time (Brian, Tater, His Dudeness, OMG Shirtless) as appropriate.
The "Negged to Bolivia(n)" mgomeme is from Mike Tyson's quote, "I'm gonna fade into Bolivian" after the Lennox Lewis beatdown.

I know it is the appropriate thing to do here, but I am a moderate fan of Butch Davis. I liked him as the Browns coach, he was on the up and up with success in Cleveland. He was just given too much executive power and went downhill from there. I wish him well. Maybe OSU next? *cough* *cough*
Right! OSU hiring Butch Davis would be like USC hiring Lane Kiffin... wait? what?
They saw how the NCAA reacted after OSU fired the vest so they figured "Hey, what the hell? We will give it a try and see if it works!"
Blame the coach, fire him, and sprint all the way to the bank!
UNC is slated to face the NCAA's Committee on Infractions in October, so by firing Butch Davis now, they're giving themselves exactly the same amount of time - 2.5 months - that Ohio State had (between Memorial Day and their hearing on Aug 12) to develop a "one bad apple" strategy pinning all the blame on the departed head coach.
The NCAA needs to recognize this as the dangerous precedent that it is - firing offending coaches is good, but it can't be seen as a panacea for more extensive institutional problems.
RichRod???
I have no animosity toward Rich Rodriguez, and I hope he does find a BCS-level job, but I doubt it'll be at UNC, because they won't be able to afford to hire anybody with a history of NCAA violations once this mess is done. Rodriguez's transgressions were minor, to be sure, but given that they occurred at two different schools, I'd think those violations will be enough to scare off any program that's facing NCAA issues.
RR, who'd had violations at two schools, isn't gonna be hired by any school that's on probation.
Possibly, but we've been very clear that there were no problems here, and that RR was not fired for indiscretions of the NCAA variety. We'd problaby give him a good refernce. Schools like UNC will give that substantial consideration together with his record of winning games in eastern inferior conferences. His recruiting contacts are also awfully close to UNC geographically . . .
Brady Hoke had a "history of NCAA violations" when he got hired by Michigan: 2 years probation and loss of three schollies at BSU.
Similar to RR getting major violations for punishing a kid for not going to class in the summer or stretching for fifteen minutes too long, Hoke got major violations for his players getting too many textbooks.
It's all nickel and dime stuff. Despite Brandon's use of "NCAA violations" as an excuse to get rid of RR while conveniently ignoring them in Hoke's resume, RR is hirable. Any school with an opening would be stupid not to hire him. I hope he ends up at a better school than UNC, though.
Brandon never once mentioned the NCAA violations in discussing the Rich Rod firing.
RR got fired for losing.... a lot... by a lot, not for the NCAA stuff. If the NCAA stuff mattered he would have been fired a lot sooner.
Where the hell is Dex when you blabbering such knuckleheaded schtuff.
Can you provide us with even a single link in which Brady Hoke's name is specifically mentioned by the NCAA in a Notice of Allegations?
With fall camps getting ready to open in a couple weeks, you probably aren't going to hire a coach in from the outside who would be implementing almost an entirely new offense. More than likely they just promote from within and probably put 'interim' in front of head coach.
You're assuming RR would just scrap everything and immediately implement his offense with little regard to what's already in place.....oh right
Well, you make a good point, actually. I do think this is a very reasonable possibility. It'd have to be an interim coach, tho, with NC showing interest midseason. Under those circumstances, he could start recruiting early as a tv guy, and getting acclamated to the NC "tradition", oh, what NC tradition . . .
It's a real opportunity for him, and one he'd probably carefully consider. I think Clemson would be a better "fit" for him if it's open, tho.
It is impossible and/or extremely inadvisable to hire a new coach from the outside this late in the offseason.
I've been hearing about RR going to Clemson, if they struggle.
I think Randy Lerner still pays him 3 mil a year, so, I wont weep for him
End speculation.

"OK then RT @CBSSportsNCAAF: Sources, Butch Davis fired at North Carolina, players have been told"
Joe Schad on twitter:
"Butch Davis has ben told in meetings w chancellor as AD that the process of termination had begun"
Does the UNC Chancellor stand and pronounce sentence? It makes it sound needlessly complicated.
At OSU, Tressel tells the Board of Trustees his review on Gee and any disciplinary action he might be taking.
"I jus' hope Corch don' faar me!"
I'm reminded of a quote from Generation Kill..."Can you believe that guy is in charge of people?"
This isn't good news for him, but it's good for other programs. UNC has a lot of potential as a program, and Davis might have been the coach to get it out of them. Now they'll probably hire some no-name and resume being a crappy program.
Should have fired him earlier, after the season ended, intsead of a few weeks before the next season started. Just mishandled.
I was shocked he lasted this long. It's just been a loop-reel of scandal down there. That guy is an embarrassment.
that DB waited to long...
Should we pursue?
Just when people started to care about Carolina football...
IME, Marshall is the smoothest runner out of all the backs that have been mentioned on this board. He's got vision, balance, moves, and speed to burn.
