OT: Better Call Saul final season (warning: spoilers)

Submitted by WindyCityBlue on April 20th, 2022 at 2:13 PM

It seems the MgoBoard has been a little slow, so though I'd add a topic that I think many folks will like.

The final season of Better Call Saul kicked-off on Monday and it was glorious.  I was late to the game with Breaking Bad, but have been up to date with Better Call Saul.  Controversial opinion: I think Better Call Saul is just as good as (if not better than) Breaking Bad.

Thoughts on this upcoming finale season for Better Call Saul?

Haven't started watching it yet.  Having been almost 3 years since the last episode, wifey and I decided to rewatch season 5.  So that's what we're doing first...  The recap giving before S6:E1 was horrible - 15 seconds of 'don't blink' clips from an entire season!

Good premiere, although I was pretty confused exactly what was going on at the motel with Nacho and what Gus's thought-process was with all that.  Good to see Clifford Main back this season, as I always enjoy Ed Begley Jr on anything.

Any predictions what happens with Kim Wexler at the end of the series? I am thinking it may end with her going to jail, and it foreshadowing that Saul was visiting her here and there offscreen on Breaking Bad the whole time.   ....hopefully Rhea Seehorn doesn't get robbed of an Emmy nomination once again later this year.

Love the show! And now Atlanta and Barry back (next weekend), some good TV going on now.

Yea.  What was happening at the hotel was a bit confusing, but I watched the season premier again last night and its clear that Gus wants Nacho dead as well. And it makes sense. Gus needs Nacho to be the fall-guy in all this.  Gus does not want to anyone to know that he is behind the attempted assassination of Lalo Salamanca.  Therefore, he needs to be part of hunting down Nacho which is aligned to the rest of the Salamanca family.

And Gus has a perfect alibi.  Nacho needed to kill Lalo because the Salamanca family threatened Nacho's father.

In my not so humble opinion, I believe that BCS is far superior to BB. I really enjoyed Breaking Bad but I never really liked any of the characters.

Better Call Saul, well I freaking love Jimmy McGill and Kim Wexler. Absolutely adore both of their characters.

Spoiler: I can't believe how cutthroat Kim was in E01. She's going to end up running the cartel lmao

I agree that BCS is better than BB (or at least equal).  However, I do think that Kim Wexler was slightly miscast.  She does very well with regards to portraying the straight and narrow character (which fits well for a lawyer).  But I'm not buying her "slipping jimmy" ways. It doesn't come off as genuine.

Breaking Bad was OK. It was hardly "Great" TV. Too many McGuffins to move the plot along, when it could have motivated it's characters differently. Lazy writing.

Saul was a pretty reprehensible character, so I've never had any urge to watch that show.

Nevertheless, the man is entitled to voice his opinion without a bunch of downvotes and people sniping "Is TOO" at him.

Excellent first two episodes.

Kim is really showing a dark side messing with Howard. The way she went off on the Kettlemens at the end was spectacular. I think she is starting to scare Saul a little.

I think Saul screwed himself at the courthouse when he accidentally said Lalo. He is still shaken up from his journey in the desert from season five.

Hard to guess what will happen with Nacho. It seems he is pretty much toast now.

I'm very interested in how things turn out. The pink bra they showed in the beginning has to tie in with the pink teddy bear from BB.

I love both series. The transformation of Walter White from a meek science teacher to a ruthless drug lord is brilliant. We don't see quite that level of change in BCS, but Slippin' Jimmy is certainly becoming the Saul Goodman we knew from BB. It's also nice to see the backstories of Gus, Mike, Hector and others. Great writing in both series.

I haven't started season 6 yet, but when the inevitable comparison to Breaking Bad comes up I echo Harbaugh. Why can't we just say both are great shows without needing to say one is better than the other?  If anything Breaking Bad compares more closely to Ozark than Saul.

Im currently watching season 4 on Netflix. I took a very long break from watching the show, but I have binged season 2 - 4 in about 2 weeks.

I look forward to catching up on this season

Die hard Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul fan.  I'm sad that this is the final season, but it should be an amazing finish.  This is my favorite series currently on television right now.

Did anybody else notice the inflatable Statue of Liberty in the Kettleman’s lot is the same one on the roof of Saul’s office?  Should be funny how he ends up with it.

Absolutely loving BCS. That said the storyline involving his brother the first 2 seasons put this series squarely behind BB in my opinion. It nearly ruined the entire series. Here are some thoughts on BCS:

1. Hard to believe Odenkirk had such a big career as comedy/variety show writer. He has 380 episodes of writing credits across Dennis Miller Show, SNL, Conan, Stiller, and Carvey's shows. I only really know him in front of the camera in Breaking and BCS, hard to imagine him writing hijinx and hilarity.

2. Sticking with resumes, the actor that plays Mike Ehrmantraut, Jonathan Banks, has 178 acting credits back to 1974. I've never seen him in anything prior to these shows.

3. After the awful first two season storylines involving his brother this show has really taken off. It's just made a beeline towards Breaking Bad since then which has been fantastic for my thirst for BBesque content/style.

4. I have always assumed that Walter White would make a cameo in this last season so I'm excited to keep an eye out for that. That said Walter White is listed on the credits for the first episode Monday night for some reason.

5. It's pretty fun to see all the tie-ins between BB and BCS. That blowup statue of liberty for example is a great detail. It's also great seeing more of the origin story of Don Eladio and his Mexican compound that was part of that amazing poisoning episode in BB.

6. Great foreshadowing strikes again with the very beginning of Monday's opening scene of them dismantling Saul's law office palace.

7. Kim Wexler's character has really grown on me. At first she felt miscast, didn't like her voice, etc. But man she's really come a long way for me. I enjoy seeing her joining Saul for his capers. I wonder if there's enough meat on the bone for her to have some sort of spin-off, of course if she's still alive at the end.

8. The fact that Nacho AND Lalo survived the opening two episodes like this season is going to be a riot to watch and I anticipate some amazing ways to tie all of this together in the end.

9. This final season is 13 episodes. They are going to air 7 in a row, then take a 6 week break prior to the last 6. I'll be glued to the TV, probably watch the prior episode before the new just to savor it as much as possible.

1. Bob Odenkirk has been in a lot things. He mostly came to fame starting on the Ben Stiller show, then starting and starring in Mr. Show with David Cross.  Both shows very underrated. Plus Odenkirk is from Chicago and he’s here quite a bit.

2. As for Jonathan Banks. He’s had a few recognizable roles in the 80s. Beverly Hills Cop for one.

3. The Jimmy-Chuck dynamic grew on me. I wasn’t buying at first, especially Chuck’s condition with electricity.

4. It has been pretty much confirmed that both Jesse and WW will make an appearance in BCS this season.  Since there is about a 2-3 year gap between the ending of BCS and the start of BB, it was be interesting to see how they do this.

5. agreed

6. That was actually Saul’s house, not law practice.

7. I still think she is slightly miscast. I’m not buying her as a conwoman. Doesn’t come off as genuine.

8. agreed

9. yep!

Good question. I guess it’s more a feel to me. She doesn’t have the background/experience like Jimmy does that molds a person into a con artist. And except in some rare cases, she doesn’t really start her own scams, she rather follows Jimmy in his scams. The character arc for Kim to become a conwoman has been really weak IMO. But that’s just me.
