OT: Best new music you have discovered in the last year

Submitted by Blue Baughs on

Judgement free zone here. Just curious what new music everyone here has been listening to, and what about that band do you enjoy.

The only new band ive had any real interest in has been Silversun Pickups. Mostly because i have always had a thing for rock bands that use alot of distortion to create an emotional layer to their music. They arent ground breaking artists or anything, just remind me of listening to older Smashing Pumpkins a little bit.

Now your turn, give me some of your personal new favorites. Hopefully we can all broaden our musical horizons a little bit.

i haven't listen to anything new in over a decade. i stick with 70's 80's and 90's for the most part. might find something worth checking out with this thread.

A Canadian band called Mother Mother.

I discovered them from a rather mediocre cover of a Pixies song they did, but their own original music really grew on me.

I have to say I wasn't thoroughly impressed with either of their studio albums at first, they were just ok at best. But I got the chance to see them live earlier this month, and they have a whole new energy at a live gig. Made me rethink my whole opinion of them.

Could not agree more. Actually, I was lucky enough to see their first U.S. show at it was amazing. First release was just great - such a throwback. I've had a hard time getting into the last release.

I was going through some old comps I'd download forever ago, and came across a song I really liked by an artist named "Lady Saw." So I looked her up, and to my astonishment she is a highly-acclaimed artist with like 12 studio albums and known as "the queen of dancehall." So, it was kind of embarrassing that I had never heard of her until maybe six or eight weeks ago. But better late than never, I suppose.

My wife digs the Silversun Pickups, BTW. Solid act, though not really my style of music.

Sadly, haven't had too many great new discoveries lately.  But here's two that have been satisfying:

I've long been a Mayer Hawthorne fan, seen him many times.  I hadn't given his side project "Tuxedo" much of a shot, but it's pretty damn funky!  Tuxedo - Do It

Another, while listening to some of Royal Blood's stuff I came across a band called The Blue Dawns.  they're not bad - The Blue Dawns - Against the Tide

If you're a fan mainly of classic rock like me, you may have already gotten into stuff like Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys, Jack White, etc.  I discovered this Canadian band at a basement bar in Chicago 2 years ago...they can jam and basically have theatrics of a band like Queen in my opinion.  Check em out - Bend Sinister - Best of You

And I have to give a plug to possibly my favorite active guitarist in the world, Mali's Vieux Farka Toure.  His dad was top 100 on Rolling Stones greatest of all time, and VFT is becoming a legend of African Blues.  They call him "Hendrix of the Sahara".  Met him a few times and thankfully was drunk so I could slur out a bit of french... Vieux Farka Toure - Safare live

Fun fact:  It's a sculpture by HR Giger, the same guy that created the alien in the Alien movies.

My favorite Carcass album along with probably being my favorite death metal album ever.  Death is the only other band with anything I'd put on the same level, and that's only if you consider their later stuff to still be death metal.

I could not get enough Cannibal Corpse, Obituary and Morbid Angel back then. Death was great too - I loved "The Philosopher". At the time, I remember being shocked that Columbia relased Heartwork. I went and saw Carcass after that "Surgical Steel" release a few years ago and they were just great. Such a good album - I was really surprised how good it was.
