OT: 2013 Duke's "Grim Reaper" defensive helmet awards

Submitted by markusr2007 on

I never noticed this earlier, but I thought it that's pretty damn cool for defensive players.

And it shows us a side of the mild-mannered David Cutcliffe that we never knew existed before.

Ahh! Grim Reaper helmet awards.

Just look at him. He's too wholesome and too damn nice to display such unrepetant evil.

It interesting, to say the least, and something I wouldn't have expected from a guy like Cutcliffe who seems pretty mild-mannered, I would agree there. To be honest, however, I like the quote from Jim Knowles in the article, since he introduced them and gave it the slogan "The Decision Is Mine", the idea being to get Duke's defense to do all the things it historically did not basically. It seems to be working, if last year is any indication.

It would be amusing perhaps, if players were told that it was one sticker for every offensive player handed to Charon, who in turn would carry them back across the line of scrimmage.

...with commercial logos, warning labels, a conference logo, a player's name and a Legends patch, there's just not enough clutter on a Michigan football uniform.

And don't forget a player's number, an American flag, a breast cancer awareness sticker, a memorial sticker for a deceased member of the extended football family, etc., etc.

I think it looks lazy when players leave the warning labels on their helmet or if they have stickers crooked.

The Grim Reaper thing looks cool though.

David Brandon needs to find sponsors for helmet stickers.  Linemen could have IHOP stickers for "pancakes."  Things that involve moving or "delivering" the ball could have UPS stickers.  Intelligent play could be rewarded by Luminosity stickers.   Interceptions could be sponsored by any condom company that doesn't have the same name as the USC football team.  And so on...
