Offense Staff vs. Defense Staff
Tonight, I was trying to decide which coaching staff I was more excited about, the offense or the defense. Although I like all the hires so far, I'm more excited about the hires on the defensive side of the ball.
IMO, the defense brings a more proven track record. I believe Durkin was a grand slam and I may have squeeled slightly hearing him state that he was waiting for JH to call him when he heard the Harbaugh to UM rumors. He's also a hellacious recruiter. I'm also excited about Greg Jackson. I think we'll see our DB play greatly improve, especially at safety.
Some of you are much more knowledgeable than I when it comes to football and I'm sure there are also people with much more insight on these particular coaches. Just for fun, are you more excited about the hires on offense or defense at this point?
-I'm going with JUB's report on Wheatley accepting the job for this scenario.
-I counted Baxter as neutral (also an exciting hire).
EDIT: In order to keep it fair, Harbaugh is neutral as well. Clearly is the most excitingest of exciting hires.

I think Mattison staying on as DL coach makes a huge difference. Maybe I just don't know enough about the offensive guys as coaches, but everyone on D seems about as close to a sure thing as you can get

does Harbaugh count for offense? If so, offense

Interesting. I feel the opposite. The offense has Harbaugh, an NFL OC, an NFL RBs coach, and one of the best OL coaches in the business. The defense has a guy who's been a DC for only two years, a guy who's been fairly mediocre recently, and a solid NFL DB coach. Advantage offense.

I kinda agree with this. Plus, the offense needs the focus more. So I'm hoping we can see a bigger relative jump in their performance.

I realize Harbaugh is going to be more involved with the offense than defense; however, he is the head coach. I guess I should have mentioned that I was also considering him neutral.

Considering the Jackhammer to be neutral is a huge mistake.

On the contrary, our special teams have been very "special" lately.

Offense: NFL RB coach, USC run game cordinator to Michigan for same duties pretty big coup, former Jacksonville Jaguar OC becoming pass game cordinator and WR/QB coach

Yeah I'm with you on the defense. Some monster recruiters and I love the Jackson hire. It'd be nice if we could develop some shutdown corners.

Lewis was already getting there late last year. Think a lot of people are sleeping on him and his effect. Teams were targetting a senior and RS JR last year (Taylor and Countess) and avoiding him in the last 4-5 games.

Their defense hasn't been that good. They've taken advantage of shitty QB play in the Big Ten by playing a hyper-aggressive scheme, which has been absolutely obliterated against teams with good QBs. That defense in the PAC 12 gives up 30 a game easily.

Yep, which is one of the reasons I'm not crazy about Mattison remaining on the staff. I honestly think he's one of the most overrated defensive coaches in the country.

D-line has imporved astronmically since he arrived.
January 9th, 2015 at 12:15 AM ^
DL is one thing we did have under RR. I would take graham, martin and rvb over our current line. it was the back 7 under RR which sucked royally.
January 9th, 2015 at 6:54 AM ^
Not sure that I would count Brandon Graham as an RR player, and RVB wasn't much until 2011, after Mattison was on the staff. Since then, we've had walk-ons and three-star D-linemen show all-conference potential (Heininger, Glasgow, Henry). Taco Charlton and Mone look very promising as well.

Isn't it the mark of a good coach to tailor his scheme to beat the teams he faces? Why would he tailor a scrape exchange scheme (which you would need to beat PAC-12 teams), in the B1G 10. No, he instilled a double a-gap quarters press scheme that was perfect for the teams he faced.

I think when you look at the offensive staff, you have to consider Harbaugh part of it. He will certainly have a lot of input. That tips the scales in my book... I like the offensive staff more.
January 9th, 2015 at 2:50 AM ^
Your Harbaugh has been designed for offense and will require many high-end parts to run said offense. Yet his defense will be better than his offense. This paradox has not been explained.

I think the Drevno hire is flying under the radar. Our O-Line has a ton of raw talent. If he can turn that group around it would be huge. He is supposed to be a great coach, so I have high hopes for him.

I think it's more interesting to compare this current staff with the previous staff. If the knock on Hoke is that he failed to develop players, maybe that was first and foremost a staff talent issue that reflected itself in the failure to develop players.
I don't know why, before they've played a down, but I've convinced myself that the new staff is made up of God tier game planners. I expect that game planning is where we will see the biggest immediate impact between 'as-was' and 'to-be'.
January 8th, 2015 at 11:03 PM ^
I thought Hoke and Co were decent game planners. I mean other than the 10 or 12 men on the field, poor use of TO's, lack of halftime adjustments, lack of seemingly any adjustments, very predictable play calling, situational awareness, playing concussed players......I mean Hoke didn't even need a headset!

January 8th, 2015 at 11:28 PM ^
In all seriousness, I was a Hoke supporter until about the middle of this season. There were aspects of his coaching that simply did not improve, game planning/management probably being the biggest.

WIN/WIN. Sustained drives by the offense and creating 3-and-outs by the defense and pinning the opposition deep with special teams.
WIn-Win-WIN

There's an enormous amount of work for this staff to do. More for the players. As Coach Harbaugh said at the press conference "let's see what kind of team we want to be."
It's up to the team to respond.
I hope they do.

Yeah but we, as posters, do none of that work. Patting ourselves on the back is not an issue here.
January 9th, 2015 at 9:42 AM ^
Agree no pat on the backs. Heaven forbid we get excited when the pieces are finally seeming to come together. It has been a rough ride the past decade with few bright spots.
