NYC Buckets' Final NIT projection: Michigan in
John Templeton of his great site, NYC Buckets, has just released his final NIT projected field.
Michigan is a 6 seed and would play a game at 3 seed Connecticut.
If Michigan won that game, they would be guaranteed a home game in the Second Round.
How? Their second round game would be the winner of 2 Illinois at 7 William & Mary.
Illinois cannot host an NIT game at all due to renovations at their arena.

Let's all hope Michigan has their name called. 8:30pm on ESPNU.
UPDATE: Here is the final updated NIT projections with the first four out of the NCAA Tournament as the NIT 1 seeds. Michigan's projection remains unchanged.
yes, they do not want teams from the same conference in the final four in NY.
One year, Purdue played Indiana in the finals.
Watching the big ten championship shows how level the big ten is this year. We played Wisconsin tough in the tournament, took them to OT, and took MSU to OT in EL. Next year we'll win those kinds of games as our players mature.
UConn will be in a funk after gacking away their shot at the dance, at home no less.
They could definitely win the whole thing if they were to make it in. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Michigan could win this thing. Of course would much rather have a shot in the tourney, but oh well.

Playing 5 games in the NIT and three weeks of extra practice would be advantageous for our team.
Their offense is horrific.

I will say that, at this point, I would see getting into the NIT as further preseason practice for the season to come later in the year, and if we make noise there somehow, all the better. I do like the potential for a Michigan / UConn matchup if that happens. Twelve automatic bids seems like it is normal for the NIT, although I think those represented nearly half the field a year or two ago.
Do they play Walton in the tournament or shut him down for the year?
What benefit is there to him playing? Winning an NIT, while theoretically nice, means nothing. No reason to risk further injury with him. Just let the young guys play and develop more.

At this point, this is about getting extra practice time and experience for everyone else. Rest Walton and do what you need to do to make sure he's healthy and 100% ready to go by next November.

Living in Connecticut it'd be nice to play/beat UConn. Then I can talk trash to my friends or maybe see us play in Madison Square Garden. Sadly though I feel like getting into or winning the NIT is like winning the Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl or something just doesn't move the needle for me. So I'm all like...
It's good for team development while giving the fans something to watch.
Think of it as a "Spring Game" for basketball.
With so many of Michigan's players staying in Ann Arbor this summer, a little extra practice time and a win in the NIT would be some excellent motivation for next season, as well as more time for these guys to gel.
Any word yet?
Way off on his prediction.
Looks like UM is out.

Really cool thread about some guy's website and its hypothetical schedule for a tournament that no one cares about.
