NFL Sunday - Early Slate of Games

Submitted by Nervous Bird on September 27th, 2020 at 1:12 PM

I'll be rotating between Steelers/Texans, Raiders/Patriots, Bears/Falcons, and I'll probably check in on the Vikings/Titans. Interested in seeing if a few 0-2 playoff contenders can get their seasons turned around. And, that Cam Newton v Derek Carr matchup could be explosive today.

What is everyone looking for in today's games?

Just watched Mo Hurst blow up a running play vs. the Patriots and come back the next play and chase down a screen from the opposite side of the field. That was the most predictable draft steal of the past several years (5th round, 140th overall in 2018).

It was strange that the many in the NFL dropped him in the draft because of a heart ailment he played with for 4 years at Michigan. I doubt the NFL doctors are have more expertise than doctors at one of the most respected Universities and University hospitals in the nation. I understand a certain amount of caution, but for a 1st round guy to fall into the 5th round because of this? Yeah, Hurst was a steal!

Lions would probably have ignored Hurst regardless—they have a long, long history of passing up notable UM players; in 2018, they chose world-beater Dashawn Hand and left Hurst for somebody else to pick up.

In the 2007 draft, the Lions passed on both Lamarr Woodley and David Harris, opting instead to take...

Drew Stanton.

Apparently, the Rams are like - "it's not even noon and we're already in the 3rd quarter?" Once, I flew home from the west coast and had to go to work the next morning. LOL that didn't happen!

Looks like that might be it for Dan Quinn in Atlanta. Two straight 2nd half collapses, 0-3, haven't sniffed the playoffs since their Super Bowl run several years back, this regime is over.

Foles nearly threw five touchdowns in the second half. Maybe some luck in the Falcon's not preparing for Foles at all but that is impressive none the less. You roll with him until he proves otherwise. This is the first time in the past three years that the Bears offense actually looked dangerous. All those playmakers (Robinson, Miller, etc) all looked significantly better with Foles throwing the rock.

I tried really hard to jump on the Trubisky train but he's too much of a liability. He's like if you took DMC's mobility/athleticism with high school Joe Milton's accuracy and decision making.

Sack by Devon Kennard! One of the more puzzling moves by Quinntricia was releasing the last 2 years team sack leader, Devon Kennard. He was one of the more productive players on putrid defenses. Well, he's got an early sack against his former teammates. I suspect he'll have another sack or two today.

Jourdan Lewis with a sack taken away by a downfield penalty. I was surprised to hear that he had 4 sacks last year. The blitz him out of the slot quite a bit, apparently!

Unpopular opinion around these parts, at times, but I've always been a Stafford supporter. He's not Rodgers or Brady, but damn, how many quarterbacks are! You give him a good supporting cast and he may give you a season of magic similar to Flacco, Wentz/Foles, Matt Ryan.

I think a new regime would have about 3 good years of being able to go all in with Stafford. If Quinn and Patricia are let go at the end of the season, a good coach and GM can come in and turn this team around with better schemes and by utilizing the salary cap space Quinn leaves (25m as of now). There's decent talent here, and sometimes defenses can be schemed to competency even if the talent is not top notch. If I were the Sheila Ford Hamp, I would blow the team up. I'd find the front office and head coach who committed to a quick turnaround.

Well, our dreams of a front office and coaching change at the bye, after going 0-4, are over. That damn 4th quarter specialist Matthew Stafford masterfully guided the team down the field into field goal position. When the defense keeps him in the game, he can win it for you. Good fortune that Murray had problems sighting his rifle on a few occasions, though.
