NFL Contracts - all current and recent Michigan players

Submitted by Yo_Blue on

There is a site that tracks all NFL contracts and is sortable by team.  I took a look at the Michigan players, found it pretty damn interesting and wanted to share with the board.  LINK

Brady and Woodson are 1-2 on the board with ~$196M and ~$98M respectively.  Those are mind-boggling numbers.  Jake Long is third on the list with $71M career earnings.  The retired players like Woodson and Long are unrestricted free agents.  Others are still active in football at some level like restricted free agent, Devin Gardner, and exclusive rights free agent, Jeremy Gallon.

Many of the 2017 draftees have signed rookie contracts and the list shows the UDFAs who have picked up some form of contract.  These guys are listed at the bottom of the list, but will be in great shape should they make their respective teams.  De'Veon Smith for example has a 3 year deal for $1.665M with the Dolphins.  Denard is an unrestricted free agent this season and has not signed a contract with the Jags.  After drafting Fournette this year, he may have to look elsewhere for playing time.

It will be interesting to see how Peppers and Wormley end up.  Their deals could be quite lucrative.

Enjoy!

...and a star.  Eli Manning's career earnings are almost $10M more than Brady.  That tells me that he isn't giving back for the betterment of the team like Tom has done in the past.  Brady has restructured multiple times to allow the Pats to pick up free agents under the cap.

What that should tell you is the Manning was drafted one overall and Brady in the 6th round. Hard to catch up on those first couple of years at league minimum. Plus super bowl winning QBs make roughly the same salary even if one is much better than the other.

How accurate do you think these figures are? It's hard for me to believe that Avant only made 2.2 million during a 9 year pro career.

40 year decision when they were teenagers.  It's great to see them succeed.  Looking for great things on the field at the next level for this year's rookies.

Lol wat? I love that all these guys contributed the UofM and have made it to the next level but most have not made 40 year careers out of this. Denard fergodsakes could get never play again if he doesn't make a team and have a life earning of 2.5 M. That's not a lifetime of earning. Take taxes, agents, living expenses and the fact he has a large family and there's not much left. He's not guaranteed a job after this. Or look at UDFA who might never make a team. Just saying they sustained a lot of head and body damage and may never make much. Certainly not a goal every teen should be striving for.

Off-topic: Another Michigan fan and I looked at the lifetime earnings of Michigan's 1991 basketball recruiting class (i.e., the Fab Five). The overall number is pretty amazing, as Webber, Howard, and Rose played for many years and had a few "max" (or near-max) years apiece. Jimmy King made a small contribution. I wondered if any class up to that time (or for several years afterward) could match it (adjusting for inflation, of course).

To me, mind-boggling is that Adrian Beltre has made more than almost all NFL players ever. Beltre has made ~201M in his career.

Don't get me wrong, Beltre has been good, but he's 30th in all-time WAR for 3rd baseman.

Exactly....  Baseball is where the money is and you don't have to perform at an exceptionally high level to get paid.  I heard on the radio that Jeff Samardzija has made something like $148M in baseball.  He'd have never come close to that in football even as a first rounder.  While he's had a decent career, it's nothing special IMO (< .500 with 4+ ERA).

I was sifting through this and it is interesting to see the wage differences between the NFL and MLB laid out like this. For example, although there are only 9 contracts in the MLB worth north of $200 million over their entire life, assuming all goes well for those players, according to this, there are zero of those in the NFL and only nine worth more than $100 million over their life potentially.

Factor in the potential for brain damage, and it's a wonder why more kids don't play baseball.  Our youth programs are drying up while the Latin leagues are totally dominating MLB.  Take a look at any roster for Hispanic surnames.

Also as mentioned Jason Avants numbers are just the last 2 years.

Larry Foote also has to be wrong, 12 year career, 950k, no. That was just his last season, 2014

Deanthony Arnett listed as well, another mistake.

for the UM guys in terms of how much of their NFL $$ they are left with at tne end of their careers.  I'd hope that they are at least somewhat more likely to make good decisions.  TB and Woodson will be fine, but for a guy who's made $5-7MM (before texes, agents, etc.) and needs to make that work and last for him, there are a lot of places where one could stumble.

I would think that the numbers for Will Campbell and Cam Gordon are not accurate as well, based on how much they've bounced around the league.  Wasn't Gordon on IR for a least one season?
