Newsome Theory

Submitted by NYWolverine on
Michigan is a school of traditions; we all know this.  We're on the cusp of a football season that will radically change the look of the football program that many of us grew up spectating.  What is the possibility that the coffers-that-be have maybe nudged RR into establishing spread with pocket-presence as the new Michigan instead of spread-n-shred?  I mean, we're all excitedly discussing an offense that will DRASTICALLY change the look, feel, and aura of Michigan football.  Since RR's arrival, I hadn't really thought about the checks and balances on his ability to do that.  I just have a hunch that Michigan won't be looking for the Russell Shepherds as much as they will be recruiting the Tate Forciers and next Steve Youngs of HS talent.  I think the coffers want to see a spread reminiscent of Michigan vs. Florida on a weekly basis more than they do field chaos and the West Virginia Pat White system.  Michigan Football has to know where its money comes from, and its not from people who grew up watching the spread.  Plus, like someone else said, RR has not historically gotten his QBs NFL ready...but Michigan has.  That's another tradition that I don't think the Michigan coffers want to see die.  Newsome is going to VT in my opinion, to follow in their tradition of Michael Vick.  It's going to be Tate and Beav for U-M.

Except that Michigan WAS recruiting Russel Sepherd and Kevin Newsome as their first priorities.  And don't forget RichRod and Pryor.  You're kidding yourself if you think Rodriguez's first choice is going to end up a Steve Young one day.

Hate to say it, but Forcier ran for more yards than Newsome last year.

So, your Newsome = Vick, Forcier = Young would seem to be based more on skin color. Newsome even said he wants to play in a pro-style offense.

Forcier is sometimes called a more "polished" passer, but their games are similar - pass-first dual-threat QB's.

If Newsome said he'd be comfortable running a pro-style offense, then the current look of the Michigan offense looks ripe for the taking.  If he wants to be more of a dual-threat, nobody stands in his way.  I was putting more significance on the QBs 40 times because all [sic] the hype has been on speed before total yards so far.  I think the end-all here is that this is my last post commenting on why these young men commit and then de-commit.  It's obviously an important personal decision, to each his own, and it's impossible to be completely objective with a critique.

NYW, I'd love to believe that RR has the ability to dial in the exact QB he wants to run his offense because Michigan can land any recruit we want.  But I think that its a little presumptuous to think we have the kind of sway.

And by the "coffers" I assume that you are referring to the donor community.  My true belief about the football boosters is that they want a winner and a clean program that won't embarrass them.  If we win 11 games a year by running the ball 95% of the time, boosters will be delighted.  If we lose 5 games a year but put every QB in the NFL, RR won't get to see too many seasons.

Michigan Football has to know where its money comes from, and its not from people who grew up watching the spread.

No, they grew up watching Fielding Yost's teams running the Wing-T or whatever the hell it was. They'll watch the A-11 as long as we win without cheating.

maybe he just wants to stay near home.  Good luck to him.  Maybe he'll change his mind again.  Michigan will be fine.  Beaver's enrolling early, and we've got good shots at Tate and Eugene.  Let's get a freaking defensive end that's not a DT in disguise.

Before Elvis Michigan didn't really have a quarterback presence in the NFL. Harbaugh was about it. In other words, the idea that Michigan has some sort of great tradition of producing NFL caliber quarterbacks is relatively recent.

As to the other point -- the idea that football donors -- or ex-players -- might influence the type of offense a coach might implement is a stretch.

Come on Tate!! The weather in Ann Arbor is fine!

Yeah, nice theory except the rich people who take black helicopters to their skyboxes remember plenty of pre-Harbaugh option QBs and always knew that left-coast pro-style QB U thing would never work anyway.

Your black helicopter must be smaller than mine. It's even more impressive when you consider that due to the curvature of the earth, 13 nautical miles at altitude is a bit more than 13 nautical miles at sea level. Or at least that's how I overheard Bill Martin explain it to the coffers while we were on his boat drawing up Xs and Os for "Rich Rod's" playbook. Don't worry, the waggle is still in there.

You guys have it all wrong; the black paint attracts heat and lessens fuel efficiency.  I painted my chopper maize and check the air pressure in the landing tires regularly, bumping my fuel economy to a Barwis-like 14.3 nautical miles per gallon.  My Maize helicopter runs the 40 in 4.13.

But thanks to all for pointing out the ridiculousness of my topic; I wasn't arguing that the rich alums donating $$$ to M Football were drawing up the playbook, but merely that the gravity of taking over a program that likes its corner of the endzone TD passes could pressure a coach into looking outside the bubble screen.  More of a marriage of the old and new than a total makeover.

Under Bo there were alums yelling that he ran too much.  Others yelled that Mo threw too much.  Others that yelled that Lloyd [fill in the blank -- ran zone left??] too much.

There is only one things that all of the alums agree on.  Win football games and keep the program on the up and up.  If RR wins, he will be the most popular man in AA.  If he loses, not so much.

I have immense pressure to go to school in my backyard, but that's because my daddy is a cult leader, and the school is right next to the alter where we sacrifice kittens, and said alter just happens to be in the backyard.  So I know exactly what's going on here.  PS- call the ATF!
