I haven't fully updated my class of 22' database, so it's just a matter of time. I'm aiming for June/July, once I've viewed all the relevant prospects. I refuse to cut corners and rank kids I haven't viewed live. So if that means less traffic to my site, so be it. Would rather be thorough than popular.

I could try to sell you my "expert opinion", or whatever catch-phrase folks in my industry like to throw around. But the truth is, the comp level in his HS film is weak and I wouldn't be giving you a very informed preliminary assessment. The plan is to see him over the course of the next month versus EYBL level competition and come back with a detailed evaluation.

Just from watching initial film of him, I like this offer. I think he projects more as a C than as a PF given his size, athleticism, and skillset. He's got a solid frame at 6'10" 230, has nice hands around the basket and can finish through contact, has a solid face up game, nice footwork, and has the ability to hit some face up and post jumpers and range that could potential extend to the 3 point line. He's not an elite athlete, but a solid athlete. Couldn't find much however on the defensive end

Highlight tapes are normally geared to showcase offense.

But there are a few clips from which we can glean some insight.

For instance: 3:45 of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMDiucX_p7g.

Given Reed's size, we can guesstimate that the opposing player has college size with reasonably good athleticism. Reed defends that dribble drive attempt well and blocks the layup. (He shouldn't put his hands on the opponent's hip which will be called at the next level.) But Reed moved his feet well and showed some good anticipation on shot block.

That's my city! (I grew up in NYC and then St. Louis.)

I wasn't aware of him even though he attends Chaminade. I'll check out some of his highlight tapes.

ETA: Just watched his junior tape.

Tarris Reed is talented and is a great fit for us. I would love to see him in Maize and Blue.

Just based on this tape, I think he's underrated and underranked. I would have him in the top 40-50 for sure. If that dude is truly closer to 100, then this is about to be the GOAT HS recruiting class. (It's not.) He'll likely get a rankings bump in the future.

Given a choice between Gregg Glenn and Tarris Reed, I'm taking Reed.

Totally serious and non-snarky question that will probably come off as snarky because internet: what makes you think he is underrated? Wouldn't you need to have good information on everyone rated above him? Do you have that information?

I just always wonder how people who aren't professional recruiting experts (which you may be, I don't know) can render a reliable opinion on whether someone is over- or underrated.

I don't mind you asking. You're curious. +1 for that.

I was a coach on the AAU circuit for one of the better programs in the nation (St. Louis Eagles) and I coached HS bball/fball as an assistant in Missouri and California.

From about 7 years of experience, I have a sense for how a top 10 vs top 25 vs top 50 vs top 100 player vs top 150 player plays/performs.

I used to do a mini-experiment back in my HS coaching days. I would take a few friends - who were casual college basketball fans but hardcore NBA fans - as spectators to Pangos All-American camp or some other big-time camp. Since they loved the NBA but had merely a passing interest in college, they weren't gung-ho about recruiting and had very little knowledge of who's who. After watching games, I would ask them to rank the best players they saw.

Usually, just based on performances over 2-3 days they would be able to separate the top 10 from top 25 from top 50 from top 100 on purely the eye test. (And mind you...this was waaaaay back around 2007 and 2008 when WiFi and cell service weren't readily available all over the country so they couldn't look it up on a smart phone. Back in those days, it was the Moto Razr. lol)

Occasionally, they would rank a player in the top 25 or 50. After checking, they would see that this specific player was ranked as a fringe top 100. Usually one of 2 things happened: (1) that player got a bump (so ranking changed as more info was accumulated and assimilated) or (2) the player was just unusually hot for a weekend and fell back to earth in subsequent camps.

But the eye test was generally reliable because the difference in quality and ability of players was apparent even to casual observers.

Think of it this way: A Hall of Famer is on a different level than the occasional all-star from the quality starter from the bench player. Same thing happens in recruiting rankings.

People focus on recruiting misses a lot (like Trey Burke* being a 3 star) but, by and large, the rankings are correct. (*If 2011 class was re-ranked, you best believe Burke would be rated a 5 star with the benefit of hindsight.)

Ex: There's a reason that overwhelming All-Americans come from top 40 and not the top 250.

Ex: In NFL, there's a reason most Hall of Famers and Pro Bowlers and All-Pros come from the 1st round and not the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, or 7th round.

Re: Tarris Reed

What does this mean for Reed? I think he's underrated. He looks and plays like a top 50 player. You have to understand that the recruiting rankings are still in flux. Some players are ascending as they improve with physical maturity and skill development. Some overdeveloped players (like Glenn) are trending downward. Furthermore: because of the pandemic, more kids than usual may fall through the cracks or may not receive the hype they deserve because fewer evaluators have seen them play or the sample size of games watched is smaller.

My answer won't be nearly as good as the one above, but you don't need to see every player to say someone should be ranked top 50 or top 75-100 or whatever. If you know enough, you can say roughly where a player like that would have been ranked in previous classes. That should be pretty close to where he should be ranked in his class.

When I saw this thread I thought "Oh no, we are out on our top prospects and are moving to secondary level of players...after watching his extended tape this was not a a well-founded fear-this is a very good option. My first point of assessment in a young big man like Tarris is how he moves-physically. That a 6'10" 17 year old is this fluid and light on his feet-screams of applied athletic potential. I also like that the tape shows a significant level of "team player" in this young man. Juwan and staff can forge this talent into an elite player.
