NCAA Tournament - Evening Games Open Thread
I didn't see one yet, and I thought having a forum for general discussion of the evening games suvh as Butler / Marquette and Gonzaga / Wichita State (among others) might be convenient for all.

I didn't expect Gonzaga to beat OSU anyway. The zags never should have been a #1 seed and they never should have been ranked #1 with their schedule.
March 23rd, 2013 at 11:04 PM ^
they probably deserved a 1 seed, especially in a year where nobody separated themselves.
but they also didn't show anything during the year to expect them to win many games in the tourney. i was 100000% sure they'd lose in the second round--just had pitt beating them instead.

Nobody separated themselves, but sportscasters said all year that if you had Gonzaga in a tougher conference (like the Big Ten) they easily would have had several more losses.
I just don't understand how you can't take strength of schedule into consideration when you're handing out #1 seeds. I felt the same way several years ago when St. Joseph was a #1 seed. Yes, they had 31 wins but look who those 31 wins were against.

not a bad conference, at least St. Joe's went to the elite 8 that year I believe

gonzaga didn't really pass the eye test. yeah olynyk is good, but it's not like memphis where they had a ceritified future nba star like d rose. so i guess i agree with you. they definitely set mid majors back a couple years...never gonna get a 1 seed again
March 23rd, 2013 at 11:14 PM ^
they would've had 8-10 losses if they played in the B1G
Playing in a cake walk league doesn't mean you should be # 1 in the country.

offensive rebounds are ya gonna give up wichita?

Did he just say monster upset? I'm pretty sure lots of people knew Gonzaga wouldn't live up to it's #1 seed.

One of the Witchita St bench players has a huge tat of the "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign on his arm. LOL I bet their NCAA compliance department just loves that....

give me a break, I predicted Gonzaga would lose in this round about a month ago

Cotton McKnight: And Witchita State beats Gonzaga in a *shocking* upset.
Pepper Brooks: I feel *shocked*.

Not a shocking upset if you really follow college b-ball, but a fun one none the less.

So my West region has Ohio left and that's it. Wow what a dreadful region.

GAWD, if Pitt could have just shown up in the first round... Many had Gonzaga out in this round.

next two games are not easy, to be sure, but highly doable.

Wichita St.,Miss or Lasalle will be there

Eww...Shockers are my guess, though. I thought they were a good team all season anyway, maybe not Elite 8 good, but at this point it's theirs for the taking (along with the other 2 teams).

As I mentioned often here, most recently in my "Gonzaga? Puh-leeze" comment, Gonzaga was the most overrated team in the tournament. They certainly proved it tonight. Their conference (WCC) consists of Gonzaga, two mediocre teams, and the rest are all tomato cans.
Gonzaga didn't deserve to be #1 and they showed it tonight. The only thing that surprises me is that they lost to a team that is decent, but not anything close to the top half of the Big Ten.
They will still be overrated next year, though. When it comes to the media, old habits die hard.

Illinois beat em by 11
March 23rd, 2013 at 11:23 PM ^
I know this isn't unique to me, but it feels like my bracket has been crushed in most close games. Marquette alone has busted me twice!

Birthday week for me....ate well all week starting with wednesday night's awesome sushi outing, veal marsala last night, leftover veal marsala and a bloody mary this morning, U-M kicking ass in the tourney
B1G doing well but Wisconsin losing (yay)
ND got their ass kicked in 1st rd and some other Big East teams laid an egg
Zags proved they were over-rated, Kansas looking over-rated
Do you guys think the Final Four could consist of all B1G teams? Could happen, highly improbable but not impossible.
March 23rd, 2013 at 11:49 PM ^
I do think UNC has a better then 50% chance to beat them. I think Kamaas will win with the size advantage.
If Michigab plays like they have they can bear either one.
March 23rd, 2013 at 11:34 PM ^
No color commentator wants to be the one to say, "Well, I can't say I'm surprised because Gonzaga is wildly overrated and would have sat in the middle of the standings in the B1G, ACC, Big East, etc..."
So, I can't be upset with the fact that they're calling this a "shocking upset."
Thank God they're out though.

Watching Syracuse/Cal...every time I see Michael Carter Williams I think of the Temple game earlier this year at MSG when the TU fans chanted "Lord and Taylor" or "Loss Prevention" every time he touched the ball.
Makes me laugh every time I see him now.
