MSU to announce Gholston suspension tomorrow

Submitted by gebe659 on

Apparently Mark Dantonio will hold a press conference tomorrow and will announce the suspension of William Gholson (number of games unknown). This per my friend in the athletic department.

Confirmation of at least the press conference "addressing Gholston situation" on twitter:

though I was beginning to imagine Dantonio stepping to the podium and stating how "he just hopes William Gholston doesn't suspend him" , afterwards declaring him a tragic hero and model citizen.

Against Wisky so the ass kicking Sparty is about to get is without excuses.  And I hope we mistkenly chop block him next year and take out his knees. Those things can happen. Football is a rough game.

On a related note my GF (now my wife) went to Madison during our Junior year at Michigan and  brought me back a Wisconsin sweatshrit which I have never even put on.   It sat it my closet for alsmost 20 years and I must have considered throwing it out at least 10 times....but never did and it now for one week it has a purpose.

I suspect MSU is now scrambling to mitigate the looming pr disaster of having a national audience be shown replays of MSU's plays on gameday.  One way of doing that is to at least make the pretense of taking the issue seriously and getting ahead of the story as much as possible by announcing a one game suspension in serious tones with a stern look and lots of mumbo jumbo about how disappointed the coaches are in one player in an isolated incident, a good  young man caught up in the heat of the moment, and look MSU players are really all boyscouts who help little old ladies across the street and are really humble and respectful and blah, blah, blah.  I'm sure they burning the midnight oil in an attempt to get the spin just right. I just hope there's some reporters with balls to question him about it and his dc's attitude and comments.

Honest question: What would make you folks happy? Gholston suspended for one game? Two games? A season? I'd like to know because some of the posts in this thread are borderline insane.

For the record, I think he should be suspended a game or two and I expect that to happen.

Here is what I think, you will obviously disagree, but my honest opinion:

1.  Gholston should be disqualified for the season because his actions were over the top.  I know this will not happen, but he had at least THREE plays with obvious intent to injure.  I don't think you should give out a 1 game penalty per play at that point.  There needs to be a clear message sent that that will not be tolerated.  I would be fine with no less than 2, but I think three would be reasonable.

2. Rush should get a 1 game suspension for his play.  Blatanrtly late.

3. Worthy should get an angry letter from Dantonio criticizing the lack creases on his khaki pants.  I thought his play was rather nasty, but not as bad as Rush's.

Obviously I am biased, but even my OSU fan roommates agreed with me.  There is no room for thuggery like Gholston displayed in college athletics, and sorry but your coach's statements after the game did your team's image no favors.  There is tough talk and stupid talk.  Guess which that was.

Gholston - One game suspension, now.

Rush - One game suspension, now.

Both suspensions are practically no-brainers.  Thoroughly consistent with past Conference suspensions.  Both players had been flagged on the spot for personal fouls.  Rush's foul reuslted in injury to an opponent.  The television commentators (Urban Meyer and Chris Spielman) were appalled.  I expect the Head of Officiating will be too.

And good luck defending Russell Wilson on rollouts wihout those two defenders on Saturday.

Hitting the quarterback is not a cheap shot, although you might think it was from the way UM never sniffed Cousins' jock strap on Saturday.

I do like how you people are trying to shove under the rug the absolute beatdown you've suffered for the fourth time in a row. Eventually, people will forget about your lame attempts to make an issue out of it, and the only thing that will remain will be 28-14.

He should be suspended for one game, and forced to wear a jersey with "Tom" emblazoned on the back for the rest of his career at MSU.  The only reason I don't recommend a lengthier suspension is that I know once he matriculates through your program, he'll no doubt shoot himself in the thigh or smoke up his NFL signing bonus or do something else to completely throw away his life...I will await that satisfaction, which I have no doubt is coming.   Unfortunately, in your program, the more talented you are, the less you seem prepared for real life when you leave it.  Your coach is a Tressel disciple in every sense, i.e., he exploits football talent, he doesn't prepare young men for the rigors of adulthood.  Dantonio, like Tressel, is nothing more than a pimp, and he tries to hide that fact behind this fake facade of moral and religious pomposity which everyone outside of East Lansing and Columbus, respectively, can clearly identify for what it is:  a mask.  An act.  A lie.  I have no doubt a Tat-5 like scandal is coming your way in the immediate future, and I will twiddle my fingers like Mr. Burns awaiting that day.   Your players come in as teenagers, and leave as boys; OSU and MSU are literally the only programs where your best seem to continually regress as people the longer they are exposed to the respective cultures therein.  Glen Winston, BJ Cunningham, Max Bullough, Brian Linthecum, Tom Gholston, etc.- if they can help your head coach Iceburg Slim get another W, they don't get a slap on the wrist, they get a high five (literally).   Other schools have examples of such, but at yours it seems to be the standard.  And allow me to be clear- I think Tom Gholston will go down as the best player on your current roster.  He will also  thoroughly embarass your university at some point and provide plenty of laugh fodder for all of us. That's not sour grapes, that's just a careful reading of history.  You got yourself a heck of a player there, Brownie...

...is an instigation penalty on Narduzzi. Seven days in the box: no pay, no football-related activities.

Also two games for Gholston and one for Rush. If there wasn't a precedent mandating a suspension for the punch I'd be ok with letting it slide and giving Gholston one, but there is.

Gholston's actions were on-par with Corey Tropp's slash to Steve Kampfer's neck when he was motionless on the ice at the end of a game. Possibly worse, given that Gholston had multiple occurrences of intent-to-injure against Michigan players. Corey Tropp was kicked off the MSU team for his actions, with the chance to return under good behavior; however, that MSU team had nothing else to play for, since their team was awful and it was near the end of the season. That means that Gholston should be done for the season AT LEAST.

I would also understand if the Big Ten wanted to set an example that repeatedly showing an intent to seriously injure will not be tolerated, and force William Gholston to transfer out of the conference or never play college football again.

I think it should be 2.  One for the punch and one for the twist.  I also think he should be warned that any other incident that embarrases the school will mean the season.  It really was an ugly, ugly showing for him and is embarrasing for the school.

According to the transcript, Hoke said the team has submitted "several plays" for review by the league. So we can only assume that Hoke, whole avoiding a verbal flame-war, took issue with State's behavior.

Apparently, at MSU, they recognize multiple personalities in penalty situations.... Hence we will see Gholston playing the Badgers, getting trucked all day by 330 pound linemen who have no  mercy.

there has figured it out, prevailed on Dantonio to do this. Going around all blackshirt and Mussolini and ANNOUNCING that you're gonna be New Thug U is not a good long-term stratergery.

I wish they HAD dragged their feet, and got him to play this weekend, then had the Big Ten come down next week. Because they're getting curb stomped by the Badgers regardless. Losing some players might be the difference in a tight game vs. Nebraska, that I can see MSU winning. (Or losing.  But it's not automatic).

Appropriate punishment:

Gholston - 3 games - one for each egregious foul

Rush - 1 game for after play body slam

That sounds great!  But it's not an outcome that I'd predict, and I won't be terribly upset if it is less than that.

I'll be upset if Rush isn't suspended; and there is no way in the world -- NONE -- that Gholston escapes supension.  The only question is how many games, and how it goes down.

My guess is that right now, Dantonio is going into Defcon-9 damage control mode.  Hold down the number of games that Gholston is suspended; delay any effect away from major-opponent games; limit the damage to Gholston alone.

And isn't it great how our local press is covering this?

Not one mention of the details in the Sunday paper.  Almost nothing in Monday's paper.  Close to zero in today's paper, including virtually nothing questioning Rush.

I agree with a probable Gholston suspension. Since you are an avid supporter of suspending those who tried to injure players, would you support sitting Roundtree for a game because of this takedown by the facemask and kick to the face of Johnny Adams away from the play and continuing well after it was over?

I'm not saying they are on the same level of what Gholston did....just wanted to get your (and others') thoughts.

I'm not impressed.  If the ref saw it, throw the flag.

Likewise, I'm not impressed by Gholston's punch at a guy with a helmet on.  That was a heat of battle thing.  Throw the flag and move on (they did).

What deserves special attention is the bounty hunting premeditated quadrapalegic assault on a player that was already down and vulnerable.  That is where the suspension should be targeted, and not just a minor one.

I'm really not interested in trying to find any better understanding or common ground and harmony with you guys.  I just want to see Gholston and Rush suspended for your next couple of big games.

I don't care about reforming Gholston or teaching him a lesson.  I don't want to help him become a better player or a better person.  I just want him to be suspended.

There's good basis to suspend them both, based on nothing more than the stated policies and past video of past infractions that resulted in suspensions.  All that the Conference has to do is to uphold precedent.

(Though I do love how after all the "but did you see what Lewan did FIRST" comments that the video was edited to only show the end of the play).

No suspension. Facemask doesn't mean suspension....after you've already committed a penalty by coming in late, and twisting a helmet around not even making a football play on a down guy...that's a suspension.  As is a punch, which isn't that horrible, it's just automatic.

As for "kicking him in the face" that's just laughable. He grabs onto his foot, and yanks it away from him, and brushes his helmet in the process. If he wants to learn how to really try and kick someone, he should take lessons from MSU's players, because he's doing it wrong.

Please, someone refresh my memory. Glen Winston and his "three strikes" keep coming up. But what was the third one? Two of them were the hockey face punch-in and the orchestration of dormhate. What was the third?

My thoughts, he gets two dings for Rather Hall.  As an MSU fan, that was the most disgusting event in our history.  Dantonio gave the guy a chance, and he repaid with an incident that will take untold years from which to recover.  The harshness of reaction to this past football were, in part, because of that incident.  Being a head coach of 100 guys has to be one of the toughest jobs in college football--you walk a fine line between trying to do what's right for the program and the athletes.  NO institution is perfect is this regard.  I do find it extremely sad that the mistakes of youth are used by all sides to score points and make jokes.

Glen Wilson hurt MSU more than 20 loses to UM.  This is not an exaggeration.

While reading some of the "reasoning" behind your statements has made my blood boil a little, I just wanted to say how classy I thought your team and coach were.  They took the high road, and as an MSU fan I appreciate it.  I'm sorry these incidents have occured, and I think at least Gholston's suspension will be deserved.  Not only did he hurt his team, he could have injured one of your team members as well.  MSU people have a great deal of respect for D.Robinson.  He seems like an excellent example of what colleges need to showcase, and I would find no joy in seeing him injured.

One last thing, if MSU wins Saturday, I will find even greater joy in the victory knowing how much it will crush some of you.  I hope you don't see this as trolling, but a good-natured ding at a rival.  This is the way rivals should treat each other--in jest, not in unecessary violence.

... between your attempt at a calm and composed apology, and the actions of Gholston and Rush, and the unapologetic statements of Danotnio and Narduzzi.

You have every right to apologize if you want; it doesn't bother me.  But I'm much more interested in punishing your roster for the next two games, than in hearing members of the MSU fan base try to convince anybody that the program is one of classiness and substance.  I just want a couple of losses hung on you; that's all.  I'm not asking for your apologies.  I'm asking for the Commissioner to suspend your players.
