Bring in Mark Stoops as HC with his focus on D.  Retain Calvin Magee as OC to keep our offense humming.  Probably not an option as he's been with RR so long, but interesting concept.  Would placate the RR fans to an extend while focusing on the side of the ball that needs the most help.  Also, Stoops is a former Iowa player and from Youngstown so has mid-west and B10 ties.

Can someone tell me what happened between last night and this morning?  All the buzz was Miles was almost a sure things to be the next coach within a day or 2, and now it seems as if we are all back to square 1, why?

FWIW, I wouldn't mind bringing in Keeler for an interview, that is the name of the Delaware coach right?

Not sure where you heard otherwise.  KC Keeler is 50 and averages 4 losses a season. Hokemon could do that.  Out of those with HC experience still left on the board, Chuck Martin could be our Tressel

he had 3 losses in 99 and 00 before he was hired at OSU.  Keeler is 51 and that is not old for a D-1 hire.  He's a good recruiter and stand up guy.  He's dealt with staff issues and coached an NFL QB.

FCS has a playoff system - add a loss every year that you don't win the championship.

Keeler has 5 D-III National championships and 2 FCS championship games.  Hoke has not done that.  Hoke is good but not year in year out good.

I prefer Keeler (spread yes) to Hoke (spread no - Barwis must go), but I prefer a positive September backing of RR confirmed in early December to this confusion.  Barwis is the point of contact for the players at this point.

Keeler is everything Tressel was to OSU except he does not have Midwest contacts.

... Except that Tressel had spent 11 years as a DI assistant before going to Youngstown and Keeler has no DI experience at all-- player, assistant, or HC

... Except that Tressel's DI experience included three years at Ohio State and it's unlikely that Keeler's ever been to AA?

... Except that Tressel spent 19 years coaching in Ohio between Akron, OSU and Youngstown and Keeler's coaching experience is in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Delaware.

... Except that Tressel's record the five years before going to OSU was 48-16 and Keeler's record since 2005 is 55-31--  taking out the years when he had Flacco and Devlin- both DI transfers, the record slides to 22-21

... Except that Tressel was 47 when he took over OSU and Keeler will be 52 when next season kicks off

Other than that though, you're right on the money with that comparison

Welpz, I'm wearing my 1% Brock Mealer shirt today.  I wear it on days when things are particularly chaotic and scary.  This is one of those days.  Happy Saturday!

since this is an open thread.  I assume many subjects can be posited here.  When will Nebraska's blogs be added to the Big Ten Blog links on the lower richt side of the front page?

I remember how happy I was when Rod was announced.  I didn't following the process that closely so it was a complete surprise to me.  I am hoping I feel the same way this time, and I hope it doesn't end up sucking really bad this time too.

And if I can't get Gruden I want Charlie Strong,

And if we can't get him, I mean, holy hell he coaches L-Ville.  I don't think he'll even be contacted though.

I do not want Les Miles.

That's my morning wrap up.

I'm done following this search for the next couple days. How much more "over" could it be than to have a national radio show claim that Miles to Michigan is a lock only to find out it looks to be anything but that? Getting annoyed.

the coaching hires around here?  Is it he and MSC that are mucking things up?  you'd think he would want  Michigan to hire the best coach they could get (harbaugh), but each time we focus on someone, they seem to disappear or duck out of the room when Brandon comes looking for them.  When did Michigan become a leper.

Right now we look like ND and feel like MSU.  What the hell happened?  It is starting to look like Hoke might be our best option.  Les MIles would bring the Detroit media out of the woodwork, they would have a field day with the way he did things at LSU.  I can imagine Drew Sharp asking him if he would continue his grayshirting practice at UM or will he toe the NCAA lines so Michigan doesn't bigger sanctions.  This is uglier than we could ever iagine.  I would not ber opposed to Chuck Martin from GV.  He wins championships at his level and his defensive minded and has ties to the Michigan area.  Hoke is the safe pick.  Watch him go to Stanford now.

If Hart cannot stay healthy in the NFL I hope he comes back to UM in some capacity:

"Mike Hart isn't in Ann Arbor anymore, keeping busy as an Indianapolis Colts running back, but he has followed the once-proud program closely since his senior year coincided with Carr's last season.

"Rich Rod didn't have a chance because no one agreed with the hire from the top to the bottom of the school and all over town," Hart said. "I'm going to be 100 percent behind whoever the coach at Michigan is and I hope everybody that loves Michigan is the same way, too, even if they don't like who Dave Brandon hires."

Can we all just agree that whomever is hired will not be perfec?  There will be reasons not to like Miles, or Hoke, or Gruden, or Dungy, or the re-animated corpse of Fielding Yost, etc.  Can we also agree to support whomever it is that does get hired?  Please.

While it is a blast to post about every coach that crosses our minds, I am worried that the fan base is already dividing into camps.  The Hoke camp, the Miles camp, the RR-got-screwed-and-I-will-hate-anybody-that-gets-hired camp, the never-going- to-come-here-coach-X-should-have-been-hired camp, the anti-Miles camp, and so on.  People (including Brian) are already listing reasons why Miles is a bad person before he is even hired.  This is, in part,  based on claims made by a former player that people are taking as the truth.  (When Boren did this to RR, we laughed it off as sour grapes.)

The reality here is that we need a coach and soon.  We can't lose this recruting class.  The reality is that Fredo Harbough ditched us for the NFL.  Whoever comes will need a united fanbase.  We need to welcome him with open arms, not knives in his back.

My new list:

1)Mullen- I never really had him high for some reason, but as he's gotten more buzz on this board the more I've looked into him and I really like him. He's one of the few coaches I think that could not only have long term success here but immediate success.

2)Peterson/ Patterson- I've had these two pretty high the entire time as well so not much change.

3)Gruden- I don't give this one much hope.

4) Brady Hoke- I had him very low a few days ago but the more I read about him the more I like him. He's not too old

I dont' really see the first 3 happening so my next choice would be hoke. With that said, our new coach needs to unite our fan base, and our fan base is so split on hoke I'm not sure he could do that. (At least right away)

Mullen is getting run here b/c he is Brian's choice.  (I have no problem with that - its his blog.)  If we hired him, I would support him. He has lots going for him.  However, we would be pulling a coach with no Michigan connections from a team where he recently signed an new contract for lots of money and announced how happy he was to be there.  His prior team also had a number of kids (JUCOs) who would not get into Michigan. So there would be immediate questions as to whether he could recruit "Michigan Men."  Stop me if you've heard this one before,

My concern here is that Mullen may not be any better of a fit that Rich Rod.  Of course, no ones perfect.

If I recall this board has been over this a number of times that this is not a UM owned plane (I don't believe schools typically own learjets).

I cannot recall who the owner is but it is some alum... I doubt with the secrecy of the search they would be cruising around screaming HERE WE ARE.

Update:"The jet is personally owned by Richard H. Rogel, a wealthy “independent investor” and high-ranking official at the University of Michigan who in 2004 personally donated $22 millon to the school. Rogel is also the former president of the University of Michigan’s Alumni Association and served as Chair of a University of Michigan fundraising initiative that raised over $3 billion."

I just figured it out! The new hire is.....CHIP KELLY. We have to wait until after the 10th in order to hire for obvious reasons and thats why there has been so much secrecy and delaying!

right....right?

I honestly don't see why people think Gruden will come here.  There is wishful thinking and then there is hoping Gruden will be named coach.  He is just one of those names that people throw out during a coaching search (Stoops, Meyer, Dungy) that have no foundation but people still hope for it.  I am willing to put my entire journalism career on the line that guaranteeing that Gruden will never ever be our head coach.  As far as we know, it's down to Hoke and Miles.  If you are thinking about a realistic head coach, your options are probably limited to those two.  There is no Gruden.

ok first of all dan  is not going to leave MSU... he just signed an extension and doesn't have the requirements that brandon wants... and john gruden? seriously? i havent heard one thing linking him to this job... i think he is a longshot at best... i think it is down to miles and hoke...

can someone tell me why miles is so awful besides the oversigning (which i dont think would happen here)? He
