Mitch McGary waived by Thunder
I hope McGary is able to get himself over the injuries and self-inflicted wounds and get back on track on the basketball court somewhere. It sounds like he's looking at playing in either China or Europe.

I wish he would have told the staff that he would not be able to pass a drug test. If the team administers a test and he fails, it is a 3 game suspension.
The NCAA rule on this is beyond stupid, but is pretty damn stupid to fail a NCAA administered drug test.
It is always a rush to get to the NBA and make money. But now he can't even make it through one contract.
It would have been really nice to have a year or two more of him. Because playing overseas was always an option in the backpocket.
It is pretty bad when you get to the point where you know you are going to be drug tested even more and still fail it.
He is not the only guy in the NBA or sports that does this in his free time. But a lot of these guys are able to make it without constantly being suspended for it.

Not saying I know anything, but he's had a history of back problems and ergo back pain. Perhaps he's smoking pot to avoid taking addictive pain meds? Just a thought
October 25th, 2016 at 2:08 AM ^
Is his drug issue in the pros about pot though? I thought the NBA didn't test for weed.
October 25th, 2016 at 2:10 AM ^
Yeah I can't say I know anything either on that, but taking the thing that is supposedly helping relieve pain is the same thing that prevents him from even being eligible to play.
Seems like just a revolving door - be hurt, use the substance to help pain, feel better?, take drug test, fail drug test (and get tested more because of history of failed tests, get injured, use, feel better?, fail drug test....

I'm kind of surprised there hasn't been really any support from athletes for medical marijuana use. With it already being legal medically in half the US (and on the ballot for multiple states this year) you'd think they'd be behind that. Professional athletes have been spotted in dispensaries numerous times..and I don't think they were there just to look around
October 25th, 2016 at 3:10 AM ^
HBO Real Sports had an excellent piece on NFL players who use pot as an alternative to the highly addictive opiate-based painkillers. The representative of the NFL who they interviewed was a mindless stooge. He had no good answer for why the league aggressively cracks down on pot, because none exists. Ultimately, I think the leagues (particularly the NFL) have anti-marijuana motives due to their relationships with the beer companies.
October 26th, 2016 at 2:33 PM ^
Owners and players don't want to test for it, as you said it is largely the NFL's corporate interests keeping it on the banned substance list. Pretty unfortunate.

Did a giant marijuana plant knock on your door and kill your family? Weed is going to be for sale in gas stations next to cigarettes within 10 years max. Take a chill.

This doesn't really make sense anymore -- looks as though something was deleted.

Already is... this is down the street from my house.
October 25th, 2016 at 7:37 AM ^
Haha wow. Just a very inaccurate statement. You do realize that the multitude of pain meds medically administered don't HEAL a person, either, yes? Then again, you're using the word "dope" so...

Heal? Since when do any pain medications heal anything, you fucking neanderthal.
October 25th, 2016 at 10:05 AM ^
He has a point though that medical marijuana is mostly a fig leaf (not that it doesn't have legitimate uses) for people who just want to smoke pot (and I say this as someone who is fine with legalizing it).

most medicines don't heal you. they take care of symptoms, and side effects so your body can heal itself faster.

You're a Chewlies gum representative? Your pushing this anti-weed sentiment..for what? To sell more gum? Get out of here!

take a Xanax and chill while it heals you.

Yeah tell that to a million cancer patients, bub. Maybe be a little less rigid in your thinking. There's a reason it's becoming not legal.

Haven't been keeping up with the players, but I saw Stauskas made the 76ers roster.
What's the status with all those guys from the run to the Championship game?
October 25th, 2016 at 2:14 AM ^
Burke is in Washington as John Wall's backup. Hardaway is a bench player with the Hawks. GR3 is at the end of the Pacers' bench and a candidate for D-League assignment.
Basically, their NBA fortunes have mirrored those of our program since they left. :(
October 25th, 2016 at 3:20 AM ^
The rest are all on rosters, though none of them start.
Burke - Wizards
Stauskas - Sixers
Hardaway Jr - Hawks
GR3 - Pacers
Also none are with the team they were originally drafted by

It seems as though Beilein is good at developing basketball players to succeed at the college level but it's just not transitioning to the NBA. I know it's incredibly hard to make the starting lineup of an NBA team, but a coach making top 5 money should be able to regularly produce some starters. I support coach and the team, but it just feels like they're not taking that next step as a program and never will. So what coach is out there that they could bring it who could recruit, develop, and win at the level we're willing to pay?

had more suppor from the University and better food his last year he would not be in this predicament \s
Hey Mitch. WIN THE GAME (of life).

Do they have pro teams in Amsterdam?
October 25th, 2016 at 9:47 AM ^
Wish the Pistons had room on the roster for him, I think he would make a great SVG big man. Other than that, yeah, I hope he lands on his feet somewhere. As a former avid marijuana smoker myself I can say that even though it may not be "addictive" in the traditional sense, it is still a tough habit to kick.

October 25th, 2016 at 11:20 AM ^
Wish him luck, but I assume he'll be trying to land overseas and prove to the league he can still play consistently.
October 25th, 2016 at 11:34 AM ^
Hopefully this young guy can turn things around and realize the potential we all saw in him during his freshman year.
October 25th, 2016 at 11:38 AM ^
After losing Delly we could use a high energy guy to push people in practice.
October 25th, 2016 at 3:25 PM ^
They have to many centers all ready
October 25th, 2016 at 2:00 PM ^
Sheesh. For as many stars as we had on that Final Four team, not one of them has amounted to much in the NBA.
Here's to LeVert bucking that trend, but man oh man those guys have underacheived in the league.
October 26th, 2016 at 2:30 PM ^
There are like 6 stars in the NBA. the odds of any of our guys becoming stars was slim at best.

He is to small to play center in th NBA and not skilled enough to play power forward that is his problem
October 25th, 2016 at 4:25 PM ^
GRIII as was often predicted looks to be doing the best right now. I'm actually surprised Stauskas is still around, hes been pretty underwhelming. Mitch looked like the best of them all in the few NBA and D-league games he played in but obviously has other issues keeping him off the court :(.
