Just like you won't see the football commits playing this year, because it's already this school year.
Mitch Mcgary Question
Nope, he's in the class of 2012, which means he will gradate this year. It can be a bit confusing I guess because football and basketball are played in different seasons, but they are part of the same school year.
Apparently someone else hasnt graduated yet either
If you're going to make fun of someone's grammar or spelling you should make sure there are no errors in your own post.
Touche. The internet has really hindered my generation's ability to communicate with proper grammar.
You would see him play next year.
Because the initial question was answered, let's take this in a new direction.
Given that Jared Sullinger goes to the NBA (if it exists) after this season and Tim Hardaway sticks around for his Junior year, is Michigan the favorite to win the Big Ten and a top five team?
McGary will obviously develop a lot in college, but from what I've seen, he looks like he'll be a starter from his first game freshman year. If the current players can take some big steps forward in their development this year, I am thinking we are a Final Four contender in 2012-2013,
so. . . unsurprising.
I think Sullinger likely leaves after this year, and Buford is a senior so they'll be losing their top 2 players almost certainly.
We, OTOH, will be losing only Novak (quality starter) and Douglass (6th man?) who are great guys but likely replaced almost right away by some combination of Brundidge, Vogrich, Metrics and Little Big Dog. We will almost certainly be Big Ten favorites and if we're #18 preseason this year I have to think 2012 we'd be top 10, top 5 is pushing it.
Burke - Brundidge
Hardaway - Vogrich
Metrics - Robinson III
McGary - Metrics
Morgan - Horford
I know I put Smotrycz on there twice, but I think he'd start at the three and move to the 4 depending on who needs a breather and who comes off the bench. I think that line-up is very solid.
You did not say we will only be losing Novak and Douglass. Their contributions to this team cannot be overstated.
Do you remember what happened after we lost two senior leader and glue guys with CJ Lee and David Harris?
Not enough to remember their names, I guess.
My bad, typo... David Merritt. I was thinking about Manny Harris hype and the let down while typing CJ and David.
I'm not trying to say that those guys won't be missed. But for starters, graduating only two seniors is a good thing. And although those two add a lot of leadership on top of their physical attributes, our 2012 team will be laden with upperclassmen who will step up in their absence.
Again, not a negligible loss at all. But to trade Novak and Douglass for McGary, Robinson III and Stauskas while letting our other guys progress a year is certainly a net gain.
That, I do not deny. Especially with what would theoretically be upperclass starters that will grow into leadership roles very quickly based on what we saw last year: THJ and Morgan.
As our best on-the-ball defender, I can assure you Douglass will be missed.
Also, you might not want to tell THJ you think Douglass can't shoot....he only shot 1 percentage point higher than Douglass from behind the arc.
You know 35% is actually pretty decent from behind the arc right? And for a shooting guard playing out of position most of his career and becoming our best perimeter defender, for you to say he won't be missed and he hasn't improved is laughable. Sometimes I question weather people actually understand basketball when they post ridiculous shit like this
If ever there was a player that you would instantly transfer from the roster to a graduate assistant type job, it's Novak. I can see him coaching a small school in 5 years, and a Division 1 program in 10.
I would say that there is a reasonable possibility that we may lose Hardaway too.
Neither Hardaway nor Vogrich have played a minute of shooting guard in their Michigan career. Brundidge will probably play some point AND some shooting guard (most publications say he's a stronger prospect than Burke - I don't think he's coming here to backup his entire career), and Stauskas is probably your backup.
I know I'm putting Morgan on the bench, but I don't see a McGary/Morgan starting front-court, as Beilein Ball is largely predicated on a PF that can step out and shoot.
...and that game Friday counts as a regular season game?
I don't know if this is his fifth year in HS or not, but just to dispell a few myths....
I work at a private school and we get students who come in for a final year of HS before moving on. It is not at all uncommon for students that bounce around schools for many reasons, both good and bad (parents move often, learning disabilities cause school switches, poor upbringing resulting in a lack of discipline - that's a big one).
Long story short: The year of prep is a good thing from our perspective. There's the possibility he works with some dedicated teachers and mentors and matures/learns some valuable life lessons that he, for whatever reason, didn't get or was unable to get, leading to the extra year.
I could be wrong, but I think in McGary's case it didn't have to do with academics, it had to do with a lack of interest in his basketball game during his true senior season. IIRC he went to a powerhouse private school to be able to get the offers from the Michigan's and Duke's and UNC's of the world that he didn't have in 2011.
what time is his press conference tomorrow?
5 on espnU
It will air on ESPNU. Expect the actual announcement to be not at the beginning (LBJ style with far less hype).
Unless it is Demar Dorsey style, in which he will announce at the beginning but the 5pm conference will actually start at 6:10, while mgoblog BLOWS UP for the 70 minute lag.
I thought that was Cullen Christian. If so, man did THAT turn out to be a waste of my F5 key...
If he does in fact commit to Michigan, and his high school (and family) will let him commute from New Hampshire to Ann Arbor (or wherever we're playing) and basically miss most of his own school's schedule as well as a good portion of his senior year, and the NCAA can quickly change several rules and MIchigan can negotiate Mitch's early graduation, then maybe.
working for me. Hope he doesn't upset team chemistry.
.....but there would also be the long, lonely drives to Boston to get flights out of Logan. That's the hard part.
To add and clarify, a kid in the 2012 class enrolls in the fall of 2012. If they graduate early then they'll enroll for the summer of 2012.
If he would have commited like a month ago, he could have reclassified and joined the Team this year. But it is too late now, as others have said.
But come on man.
Happy 1000th MGoPoint to you!
You should do that more often, it's like Denard is personally wishing you a happy MGoPointBirthday.
Yeah, he'll be ready to go Friday.
Yes, he'll be on the team and ready to play by Friday. Also, Ondre Pipkins is expected to be ready for the OSU game.
All I can say is WOW!!!
...and you're to blame. Sir, you give newbies a bad name.
Derp <insert sharks with teeth pic here; I'm too lazy>.
Who the hell is Mell and why are you asking if he is sexy?
I did not know when the basketball season started and I can never come on here because i'm busy with college. Side note; I forgot how many assholes there are on this site. I really could care less, but whats the point in making fun of someone online? It's like for some of you the internet is a good way to go back to your elementary school ways. I laugh at you.
Okay, since it's open season for snippy comments, I think you mean you COULDN'T care less.
Your question isn't wholly out of line since he's doing a prep year. And people's excitement about him could certainly lead one to believe that he'd be starting here a couple of hours after his announcement. But as others have said, if he chooses UM we will be impatiently waiting for next season.
But can't google the men's teams schedule
I'm almost certain we'll see McGary this upcoming season if he commits to us tomorrow.
There's no way we make it through to April w/o someone posting his Brewster highlights here.
Any chance we see Shane Morris air it out against Nebraska ?
Lacrosse just got a top-50 commit from Brewster for their 2013 class. Coincidence? Assuming Shanks and McGary are friends.
The season starts Friday.
