Some of the Big Ten's best athletic departments don't get the recognition they deserve if they don't happen to be good at football or basketball in a given year, and some of our worst athletic departments give off the impression of success with nothing but football and basketball victories.

The Big Ten All-Sport Standing Cup (B1GASS Cup) is awarded to the best overall athletic department for the prior academic year.

Tier 4: The Untouchable (#14)

14. Rutgers

Tier 3: Really Not Good (#10-13)

13. Michigan State
12. Iowa
11. Maryland
10. Illinois

Tier 2: The Solid Middle (#4-9)

9. Nebraska
8. Purdue
7. Wisconsin
6. Indiana
5. Northwestern
4. Penn State

Tier 1: The B1G Boys (#1-3)

3. Minnesota
2. Ohio State
1. Michigan

The Little 4

Implicit in the name "Big Ten" for a fourteen-team conference is that four of us aren't quite so big. There's a few new faces in the Little 4 this year, as Indiana and Purdue have claimed a spot at the Adults' Table, thereby relegating Maryland and Michigan State down to the bottom of the group along with Iowa and Rutgers, who decided they were quite comfortable staying at the kids table for another year eating hot dogs and juiceboxes instead of steak and beer. Congratulations to the Terrapins, Hawkeyes, Spartans and Knights, you're this year's worst athletic programs in the B1G!

The writing is priceless. You'd think Brian was writing for EDSBS again. Slidingscrapes, I tip my hat to you. My personal favorite quote would be: "although it has been 71 years since the University of Chicago Maroons left the conference, they still have more conference titles than Purdue."

People always underestimate what a garbage athletic department MSU has.  They are obviously in a major period of ascendancy in their two biggest sports, but after that ... woof.  They continue to voluntarily employ Tom Anastos in a position that is so manifestly above his competence that it beggars belief, firebombing a storied program with a great heritage in the process.  Their softball coach is the definition of mediocrity, and has been credibly accused (though, to be fair, not legally convicted) of deliberately having her players physically abused by the coaching staff.  They are a low-standards outfit that is content to accept failure in every endeavor so long as football & b-ball continue to look good.  All the more reason for Harbaugh to put them back in their place!

This is actually comforting to me. Being around Spartan fans has been an absolute nightmare ever since their football streak started and having Harbaugh around, I know that we're finally back on the right track to beat them year in and year out. But knowing that the rest of the department is garbage, I can also look forward to their basketball and football programs coming down to earth once Dantonio and Izzo retire. They really struck gold with those two coaches.

I knew Staee was bad in all the other sports, but holy hell that is like really bad. Time for Harbaugh to shut them up.

"The good news for Rutgers fans: there was significant improvement from last season! The bad news: Rutgers remains more than 2 whole standard deviations below 13th place[.]"

I think Chris Ash is channeling Bo and installing a sign in the locker room that says "Those who stay will be one standard deviation below 13th place."

 5. IL almost 13 mil   2 schools

 6. PA less than 50K separation - 2 schools

 7. OH - Big advantage. Cinnci is not Pitt

10 MI. Fell two spots or could have kept the BIG rolling as to population - 2 schools

11 NJ- Only 80K between NJ and MI. 2 schools. Rutgers and UM, East

15 IN   Good job IN and PUR

19 MD - ????

20 WI - About right

21 MN  Excellent job, even w/just one school

31 IA - Small pop, one too many schools

32. NE - Could be IA, but just one school saves their ass probably. And you have to give them credit for their fb tradition.

This is the B1G's version of the Fulmer Cup that all the SEC schools always win.  Except without the felonies and illegal activities.

Sounds about right.

obviously the emergence of their football team along with the continued success of their basketball team gives them an appearance of competence but they clearly are not. Was MSU the Big Ten's Rutgers up until the 90's? I mean, they weren't even good at basketball till then, right? Were they just awful at everything?

"On the other hand, Purdue, Michigan State and Rutgers all finished the season without a single team finishing in first. This means that although it has been 71 years since the University of Chicago Maroons left the conference, they still have more conference titles than Purdue." Purdue Alumni must really hate knowing about this.

OSU won the Pistol championship?  How did MSU not compete for that one?  The MSU basketball team alone should have taken home the gold in that one!
