Michigan vs. Wisconsin Hockey on BTN Open Thread

Submitted by truferblue22 on

Usually by the 2nd period someone will state, "wow, look at the state of M Hockey...2nd period against a ranked team and no open thread."

So here ya go. 0-0 about 12 mins remaining in the first. Hopefully we'll see a better performance tonight than we did against msu on Saturday.

The game is on BTN

I am kind of watching it. It's on the TV while I do some other things. Not a great start.

Edit: My wife used to be an even bigger M hockey fan than I am. I'm pretty sure she would still leave me for Carl Hagelin in an instant. Now I can't even get her to come into the room to see a replay of a goal. I miss good hockey.

I loosely followed M hockey in the early 2000s, got real into it in the mid 2000s and loved our run with hunwick to the finals. Sad to see that we went from B1G champs to this so quick. Hopefully the pedigree of UM hockey can get us back on track.

Unfortunately, if this is going to be Red Berenson’s final season as Michigan’s head coach, it might become his worst coaching season ever at Michigan.  Before this season, he’d never won fewer than 12 games as Michigan’s head coach.  His lowest total of 12 wins was in the 1985-86 season when the Wolverines were 12-26-0 in the old CCHA.  It could become the fourth season in five seasons when Michigan fails to make the NCAA tournament, after having made the tournament every year from 1991 to 2012, and having won fewer than 24 games only once during that timespan.

The only saving grace may be that Michigan won’t lose as many as 26 games this season, even if they don't win another game. The Wolverines currently are 9-16-3, with six regular season games remaining, the final four at Yost, all against teams jockeying to make or improve their seedings in the NCAA tournament.

Ohio State (16-8-6, currently 13th in the PairWise Rankings) needs to win both games at home next weekend to keep its tournament hopes alive.  Minnesota (20-8-2, currently 4th in the PairWise Rankings) also will need to win both games in order to keep its place among the number one seeds in the tournament, as well as stay ahead of Wisconsin for the regular season championship, depending on what those teams do against each other next weekend.  Penn State (18-8-2, currently 11th in the PairWise Rankings) also will need to win both games in order to challenge for a place among the number two seeds in the tournament.
