What happened in Charlotte, NC in "49" for them to get that nickname?

"The nickname "49ers" derives from the fact that the university's predecessor—Charlotte Center of the University of North Carolina (CCUNC - established in 1946) was saved from being shut down by the state in 1949 by Bonnie Cone, when the Charlotte Center became Charlotte College."

Based on their logo, I might add that pickaxes were involved

Spike will have his first career dunk...McGary will knock down at least one three...Robinson dunks from the free throw line...I'll have a sub, it will be crazy
You heard it here first.

Charlotte is no slouch. That being said, I think we take a 3-5 pt halftime lead and run away and hide in the 2nd half. M wins by 12-17 points depending on FT shooting Charlotte 3 pt shooting in the last 2-3 minutes.

First time in any season we've played two teams called the 49ers in less than a week.

Stauskus picks up where he left off against FSU driving hard to the lane while hitting some threes. U of M cruises to a 82-68 victory, Stauskus drops 30, McGary with another double double.
Yay for positivity!

That FSU game was huge for this team. We always knew they had a lot of grit, especially fighting back in the Kansas game last year, but Friday night only further proved it.
Big win today, gain some more momentum heading into the showdown with Duke. Stauskas continues to do what he does, and McGary keeps getting back to form.

Stauskas....Will continue to show the nation that he is not just a shooter.

I don't want to start a new thread on this, but does anyone know if the Women's soccer game is on TV or radio? I have interested parties in the household, but live out of state.
Thanks

It isn't really possible to draw strong conclusions based on the averages to date, but I would be confident in Michigan by a comfortable margin (10-12 points) in this one.
