Michigan @ PSU - San Diego watch location (9am PST)?

Submitted by aMAIZEinBLUEinTX on October 27th, 2023 at 11:07 AM

Fellow MGoMates,

Curious if anyone can point me in the direction of a San Diego sports bar/place with breakfast and TVs to watch Michigan at Penn State November 11 - one that will be open for the 9am PST kickoff...

I'll be getting off a cruise early that Saturday morning and picking up my rental convertible near the cruise port to drive up the coastline to LA in the afternoon to attend the Lions/LA Chargers at SoFi Sunday, but will be frantically looking for a place in the morning near SD to watch our first game of the season with serious CFP and B1G East implications - any spots/recs greatly appreciated!

Cruise, Convertible rental, scenic drive up the coast, Lions away game. You’d think with that many humblebrags you could afford to search Google for a place to watch the game all on your own! ;-)

I mean, I've never been to Cali outside of a layover, and can't pass up a free cruise after working 80-90 hours per week August-Oct 16 busy season tax as a public CPA manager at a top-10 public firm, so it's not all glitz and glamour.  Yes I splurged an extra $100 to get a convertible for the 2-hour drive to LA, and since SoFi has all my $ in invest/student loans/CC/banking/other, might as well see the stadium I'm helping to subsidize in a Lions-Chargers shootout.  Should be a fun weekend.

A few suggestions:

- don't say Cali when you're out here, normal people don't use that term, only people who are tourists or think they're sounding cool but they're really not.

- I just bought 4 tickets tonight for that Lions v Chargers game, section 342, going with M fans I met on Bless You Boys.

- There's a bar in Pacific Beach, I lived there for 20 years, on Garnet Ave. Near Mission Blvd., lots of M fans watch games there, it's called The Backyard Kitchen and Tap.

Hope that helps.

Tough crowd! Just asked for a place to watch at 9am, but I'm sure the snark is irresistible. The illegal immigrants comment is in extremely poor taste, brother.

A free basic economy cruise cabin after working 90 hours a week the last 3 months isn't living it up at the Ritz.  I am excited for my first-ever trip to Cali and thought a $100 splurge to upgrade the rental was a justifiable expense.

It will be on the 100 inch TV above the breakfast bar at the 5 star resort you are staying at.  Best view is if you sit on one of the gold plated bar stools, but you may need to get there about an hour early to get one of those.

In addition to the suggestion posted earlier that you try looking it up on the ingenious but little-known item known as Google, you might also consider avoid looking boorish by omitting information such as that found in your entire second paragraph.

Deeply indebted to you for the ingenious and novel concept on the 'little-known' 'item' that you quantify Google as.

As previously iterated many times and presumably glossed over - almost ALL these bars open at 11am/later. Since this board is a wealth of knowledge (and unnecessary gratuitous snark), I thought I'd ask those with first-hand experience, as opposed to crossing my fingers and showing up at places that have variable operating hours...

Your contribution has been processed with the amount of due care that it deserves!

Tower 13 - Michigan crowd takes over

It's in Cardiff.  Right on the coast.  From there you can drive up PCH along the coast until you get to Oceanside where you gotta hit the freeway to get through Camp Pendleton then once you get to San Clemente get off on the Beach Cities exit and you will again go up the coast (back on PCH) through Laguna, Newport & Huntington.

Chance I will be there too but I usually hit a bar closer to home.  Will be at the Lions game also.

Yeah like another poster said.  All these places are open at 8.  Kickoffs at 9.  Trust me on this one you wont be disappointed.  It's a Michigan bar on game day.  Once you get your renta car get on I-5 and you'll be there in 20-25 min.

(edit) I'm not sure tailgate or not - there's like 15 of us comin from San Diego (most via Detroit) and I haven't figured out how were all getting there yet.

Thank you.  This is the spot I'm targeting. Never asked before since I haven't previously been on PST for a noon EST kickoff - much appreciated.  This all came together fast and working out the logistics in real time - can't miss 1 of our 2 season-defining regular season games. Probably could've worded it better, as apparently I sound like a rich a-hole for spending $100 on a car rental upgrade after the free basic interior room cruise..

I run the Detroit Lions meetup here in Houston if you're ever around - bar tab on me. Audio every game.

Hope to see you out there on the 11th.

Was out in San Diego last week for business. Not a bar, but on 5th street in the Gaslamp District, there was a restaurant called Lefty’s Cheesesteaks that had a M flag and a Lions flag flying if you feel like grabbing some food from them :)
