Michigan down 7-2 at present. Game on BTN.
Michigan - Penn State Basketball Open Thread
How many references are the announcers going to make to there rough morning?
as many as the number of times they will talk about D-Mo's right hand dominance.
Turnover-itis is killing Michigan to the tune of 14-6.
A couple bad turnovers, not cleaning up the defensive boards.... could be a long one if this keeps up.
This butterfly shit needs to stop. I know it won't, but are we really going to be hearing this for 2 more years after this one?
both smotz and hardaway off to rough starts
Anyone else think the BTN announcers are horrendous? And enough with the "butterfly" moniker already.
Teams are keying in on Novak now and we can't get him any good looks.
I less than three Darius Morris. 18-13 State.
This "offense" is hard to watch. Too much 1 on 5.
how do you leave battle wide open for 4 different looks from 3, thankfully he has missed a couple but damn you would think the gameplan today is to exclusively lock him down and make someone else beat us with brooks being out.
PSU seems to run a lot of screens for Battle, and he has a ridiculously quick release.
see you - man - ball. Always see your man and the ball, we have really poor off the ball defense.
UM has looked very flat today. Hardaway got into early foul trouble, there is VERY LITTLE movement on offense, and now Douglass is limpin around.
Not lookin' to good for the ol' Maize & Blue.
also, is Taylor Battle like, a 29 year old 7th year senior?
We need to turn this around quick, down 13 to 24 currently
EDIT: Immediately after posting this we rail of 3 straight three's, she's filled back up
Very clever. Well-earned +1.
Is it just me or does this home crowd seem mighty quiet?
Make the game feel like a shoot around, and nobody feels any urgency. Brilliant.
I played in front of bigger crowds in high school
Well, a lot of PSU alum/fans could be at the SB.
Every home PSU game is like this. I have no idea why they built such a large arena. Their basketball fanbase is tiny.
Up at 2:30am in Korea - no streams found. Listening through mgoblue.com.
Any streaming links anyone?
nothing so far... I'll post if I find something.
Without Hardaway out there the offense loses a lot of firepower
Worst half I've seen UM play in a while. Maybe this will stop the ridiculous NCAA tourney threads?
As long as PSU & MSU are considered on the bubble.
There ya go Michigan! Only down by 5 now, 2:50 left in half.
Stu Douglass is a cold blooded assassin.
And just like that... we have a ballgame folks.
Nice little run.
Can really turn a game around quickly. UM just made 3, PSU missed two on quick trips in between. 9-0 run.
now a 2 pt game
this game is very winnable.
PSU boobirds. And 1. Schweet!
D-Mo silenced the boos just a little.
If we get stops and get Darius out in transition, that's our best chance to get our shooters some looks, we are having a really tough time in half court offense
This butterfly shit has got to stop. Does this guy realize he's literally the only person on the planet that thinks it's a good nickname?
whenever he does something good you just say:
"The Butterfly is spreading his wings right now"...
I agree 100%. He is the *only* person who uses this nickname. Horrible. And it's a nickname that will be obsolete after this year anyway - he'll no longer be "blooming" but will be a legit star.
Yet still, how many comments like this have I read? I've probably read this same sentiment here on the board about 100 times - at least!
Enough. I've resigned to give him his "butterfly" and pray that it will no longer be written about.
Michigan ends with a 14-0 run, 27-24 good guys.
some of the worst fans out there. Way to boo your team for being down 3.
par for the course for this group though. Delany has got to improve the quality of officiating in both basketball and football
Penn State hasn't scored for 7 minutes. Wonderful
I turned the game on at 24-13 and Michigan immediately goes apeshit on the offensive end. Had I known they were going to do that I would have turned the Big Ten network on at 9 AM.
I was wondering why they decided to start playing well all of the sudden.
This explains it. Now, go back and turn on the Gator Bowl please.
The Gator what now?
Stu Douglass needs a little more consistency out of his three point shooting. We need to be able to depend on him making big shots game to game
Plus one for the pic. Sitting Bull? I like this one with the nice hat.
Mich trailing by 4, 13 minutes left in 2nd.
he said "A Super Bowl effort here, today..."
its clever because the Super Bowl is today!
I don't know how BTN finds these guys, but they definitely deserve a fat raise.
Tim Doyle gently caresses the nuts of Talor Battle. Constantly. And I'm bored with it.
Michigan still flat and getting into foul trouble.
Need a win today. I know PSU is playing well, but they are definitely giving UM chances.
but BTN camera work is borderline unbearable.
also, hometown reffing in the Big 10 is a problem. (Ann Arbor included)
A couple really bad calls by the officials this half-Hardaway had Battle picked clean and they put him back on the bench, and Morris got flattened on a moving screen and somehow he gets called for the foul
Interesting fact - PSU dpes not currently have an alum playing in the NBA, and the last one was Calvin Booth from 2000- 2009. That seems insane to me that a D1, AQ conference team has been a barren wasteland of NBA talent.
Maybe Battle ends the drought?
I don't think he is a sure fire nba player.... lots of guys can shoot like him in the nba... teams will abuse his size
Battle isn't an NBA player at all. He's tiny. He may be quick but guys like Derrick Rose and Westbrook are like 4 inches taller, much stronger, and will just beat on this little guy. Maybe a journeyman backup career. He should go to Europe where they will love him and pay him a ton in the top leagues. He can come home by the age of 30 and do whatever he wants after making a few million bucks.
AI was only about 6 feet. Maybe he could be a similar player.
Does Northwestern have anyone in the NBA?
pschizo all in the same game, cant score.... can't miss.... can't score... hopefully we get back to the can't miss
grab the damn ball, enough with the back taps
If Hardaway wasn't in foul trouble I think we would be winning this game.
that was a joke.... ref anticipated the call
Anyone else notice and find it really funny that a PSU fan is there in his Packers Woodson jersey?
I wish he would jump into someone and get some ft's that has happened a couple times and he hasn't capitalized.
Penn State hat + Charles Woodson Jersey? Interesting combination given the venue.
Tied at 53!
Edit: 57-53 good guys.
I'm here for the wings and 7-layer dip.
And a helping of 3s, please.
Have we ever had a good second half start this season?
Nice drive the hoop.
Great comeback, NOW KEEP THIS DAMN LEAD!!!!
"It's been the baby blues"
Can we finish this???
.....and can I get a hot tub?
Hardaway just crushing those threes...beast!!!!
Already can't wait to see Darius and Timmay as upperclassmen
Morgan & Smotz are in Hardaway's class!
the Team will be sick in 2 years. Throw in a Junior Horford and a senior Vogrich and we have a team that is top 3-4 in the B10.
I wonder if the guy who sets down the chairs for Penn State during timeouts is also the assisstant coach on the football team.
Is it me or are refs calling some weak ass fouls
the OSU game.
The "Baby Blues?"
battle won't give up the ball from here on out
DOUBLE DOUBLE FOOLS
I just laughed at the Penn State student section "I believe that we will win" cheer absolute fail. Utah State's student section would ruin them anyday.
Utah State's student section would blow most student sections out of the water. Best one that you rarely ever hear about
Get a good, high percentage shot here--make it a 5 point game.
Come on Blue!
please draw up the pick and roll with hardaway and morgan... morgan most likely gets a game clinching dunk
you beat me to it by a minute haha
OH NO YOU DINDNT!
I hope Beilein is taking notice of how effective the pick and roll with Hardaway and Morgan has been, I would argue even more effective than with Morris because Hardaway is a much greater threat as a jump shooter
Dagger in the heart, Blue! Dagger in the heart!
Fortunate Battle threw that dog up there.
Tough knee to the head there, ouch.
Hit the free throws. Maturing before our eyes.
Jordan Morgan has to have some streak of the bellow during the slam, I feel like I see it every game.
Yeah great moves on that dunk. We just gotta finish off strong - hit those FTs boys!
Anybody hearing somebody yelling "Go Blue!" every Penn State free throw?
That sounds like the kind of thing our adorable hooligans would do.
Great 2nd half!
why did Morris not flush that dunk?
Aww Darius gotta throw that down son.
Hardaway is going to be a fantastic player before its all over. How do we keep him here for all 4 years? The logic in my head says that his dad is already rich so there's no "taking care of the family" pull to the pros after any the sophomore-junior years. I don't know anything about the kid academically, but I hope there is a "here I am at Michigan, I'm not leaving here without a sweet degree" thing going on.
Timmy will be a top Big 10 player as a sophomore. We need an extra 2 years after that of this goodness.
I realize he's just a freshman, but the arc he is on has this guy becoming dominant. Help talk me into the fact that we get 4 years of this...
Yeah, just imagine a senior Morris with Timmay, Morgan, Smotrycz, Horford, Vogrich...Baby Blues are going to be very exciting to watch in the next few years...GO BLUE
I'm guessing you missed the article about the tax problems Timmy Senior's been having and the "bailout" the Heat gave him.
great comeback... and now for the feast
Mmm...Nittany Tears are so yummy and sweet.
that's a big win for us there, and Hardaway Jr. coming of age a little bit?
Love this team. Not a lot of established talent, but just a bunch of fun kids who play well together and don't give up. A great win, and one step closer to a postseason berth.
Classy move by TIMMMAAAAYYYYY not to rub it in at the end.
Well done, boys!
A big road win for Michigan against a team that has defended home court well so far this year. Now it's our turn to defend home court.
Next on BTN: "The Journey" feat. Michigan!
14-10. The next two games are huge, we have to have them. Then get out there and poop on State at home. Then win the Big 10 Tourney. Do you like how I have it all worked out?
can someone explain to me why morris did what he did? he shouldve either dunked it or passed it hardaway for the dunk, to go up by 7. instead, he takes only another half second off clock, misses the free throw, and give PSU a chance to get back in it.
then at end of game, hardaway does the same.
someone please explain.
Unselfishness and not playing for stats?
Seriously, yes, I'd have liked to see Morris get the two - the points are more valuable than the seconds he was able to take off the clock. It's just a teaching point and not that big a deal. They're coached to burn clock first and foremost, it's just one of those things you learn with experience, when the basket is the right call and when the clock is. Hardaway was right not to bother, though.
Let's all pray to the Michigan gods that you have it right, sir
Nice win and looking sharp in the Blue while doing it.
I am with you on that. At least that first one for Darius. I understand not 'running up the score' is the classy thing to do, but in that situation you have to take the extra points to secure the win.
This is true
I hope that is the last time Morris turns down a dunk with 10 secs left in a close game.
You can't turn down an uncontested layup to go up 7 just to waste an extra second in that situation.
I'm sure that he will be gently reminded of that.
McLimans with the 5 trillion
Nice win. I'll take any win we can get on the road.
Now it's time to get revenge on Northwestern. I hope our guys pound the crap out of them on Wednesday.
Great win today. I love that our young team has the confidence to close games out on the road.
Wow. Morris did great, but I have to give the game to Hardaway. That last 7 minute stretch he really did amazing. I am very impressed. I would like for us to work it into morgan more, you could tell off the pick and roll he was open quite a bit and stu and novak should keep there eyes open for a little more. Morris is good at throwing it in there and hardaway is starting to look for it more. Since we are now starting to be a 3 point threat (wooohoo!) we are pulling people out which is leaving morgan more and more open.
And douglass, 4-4 from beyond the arc? He's also really starting to turn it on!
Ahh you beat me to it - I just saw the score and started laughing
RCMB gold of the day:
i do find it funny that we might give [Wisconsin] a "bad loss" on their seeding resume.
is looking better and better. =)
Stopped by RCMB for a second, just to see the vitriol, and boy do they overreact there. Izzo is having the first bad season in over a decade, and people are calling for his head. I'm sure that it is a vocal minority and all, but I think his flirtation with the Cleveland job turned a chunk of the fans off who were shocked, *shocked* that a coach at MSU would want to move on to something else.
Surf on over to RCMB, pick a thread. Full-on crisis mode. Delicious schadenfreude for the whole family.
I know sparty is struggling but it's the first year in a long time. I live in Ohio and I hear the same thing about Tressel all the time after any loss, or even a close game for that matter. All I can do is chuckle. Winning the Big Ten every year and making multiple national title games in football must be rough. So is conference titles and Final Four births in basketball under Izzo. What the hell is wrong with these people? Try being a Michigan fan the past 5 years...see what suffering really is.
