Michigan men's basketball now at the highest level

Submitted by get-on-my-lawn on

So obviously tonight our men's basketball team will be playing for a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, but I just want you all to kind of take a moment to take a step back and just look at all that we have accomplished.

  • We were ranked #1 in the AP polls at one point in the season
  • Ranked in the top 5 for nearly the whole season
  • We happen to be the home of the best college basketball player in the country in 2013 according to the majority of the votes

Now this is just an extremely small sample size of some huge accomplishments of the regular season, but right now I'm here to mostly talk about the tournament. Just think about this:

  • We made it to the National Chamionship by overcoming some tough circumstances
  • We not only beat a tough VCU team, but we beat Kansas, Florida, and Syracuse, three of the most successful programs in college basketball, with three of the most successful coaches in college basketball, and we looked great doing it!

What I am getting at here is that we beat three of the best programs in college basketball, and hopefully we will pick up a fourth tonight in Louisville, and we have looked great in doing it. What I mean by we looked great doing it is that we didn't get lucky (okay, Kansas maybe) and play the role of a cinderella or even a big underdog. We are now at the level of the best programs that there are in college basketball. Could I see last year's team beating Kansas or Syracuse or Florida? Yes,  but not all three, back to back to back, and the one game we did win it would be a pretty huge upset and it would take a lot of things going our way to win. But this year, we were clearly the better team or at least an equivalent in terms of talent. Just think about that: Kansas, Florida, and Syracuse, WE BEAT ALL THREE. That is just such a huge feat. Great job guys! You make all of us fans proud.  Regardless of what happens tonight, they have shown that they can compete with the best and just may be the best.

In conclustion, of course we have to thank the players for being totally awesome in talent and choosing Michigan and being good kids and teammates, but we first have to thank Coach Beilein for getting these kids to come to Michigan. Thanks Coach for bringing us to the highest level possible and keep it up for years to come!

I am at work and the internet is terrible to say the least, and I rarely post threads on here. My bad for taking up 4 thread spots and looking like a newb haha. This is why i keep my posts to a minimum.

After the Syracuse game I wanted to create a thread that we as of now effectively passed MSU as a program whole in basketball as theyve been ahead since the cleaves car crash

This is only the second time in the last 15 or so years that we've gone farther in the tournament (2011 we won a game and they went out in the first round).  Izzo's been to 6 Final Fours in that span and won a national title.  They've been doing it for a lot longer, and with back to back Sweet 16 appearances it isn't like they've fallen off the map.

This run puts us in a club that MSU has been in for a while.  Hopefully we can stay there for a decade or so, and then we can start making these kinds of comparisons.

for both programs.  We shared the B1G Championship last year.  We are playing for the NC tonight, they got bounced in the Sweet 16.  We have 3 four stars coming in next year, they have 1 three star.  We have multiple players leaving early for the NBA, they don't.  Yup, the corner has turned, you and they just don't know it yet.

Now that we're down to one thread I'll chime in with my opinion. I think they're playing good basketball but haven't shown their full potential with everybody clicking. This team reminds me a lot of the Pistons squad that last won a championship. It seems like there is a new hero every night. With Mitch kind of being the steady force. Hopefully everybody clicks tonight and Michigan rolls to a championship!

In each of the tournament weekends thus far, we played a closer-than-desired first game, which was followed by an all out stomping in the second game. Could this be related to how difficult it supposedly is to prepare for Beilein's offense in such a short turnaround? Let's hope so.
