I'll say this for our Michigan insiders, official and unofficial:
Insidering is tough work. You can't say everything you know, and a lot of the stuff you "know" isn't very certain. When a guy like, say, Oliver Martin is waffling on whether or not he wants to stay at Michigan, there is "knowledge" out there, but there is nothing certain.
It is often the case that the more you know, the less certain things are. There's a lot of data out there, and there is a lot of stuff that goes on that we never hear about. And guys with "official" status like Sam have to balance the needs of their job, to provide information to an audience, with the needs of their connections, the sources that give them that information.
A lot of people on here get mad at insiders when their info isn't perfect. But the information itself is often part of the problem.
What this MSU guy did is, apparently, quite foolish, given all of this--you'll recall that absolutely nobody with any info on the Michigan coaching search was willing to say "it's happening" until it was rock solid. This here site finally said "it's happening" on December 26, the Friday before San Francisco's last game. Webb was saying "80%" at the time. Sunday San Francisco finished its season and Bacon, Webb, et all reported it as a done deal; Harbaugh was here Monday. This was at a time when anyone saying "it's done" would get through-the-roof clicks. They waited, responsibly.
Looks like MSU's notorious athletic department discipline extends to certain corners of its media halo as well.

Man, you absolutely nailed it. I appreciate most fans quest for the most up-to-date info and the need to hear things before they happen. Before I worked in the industry I was the same way-- I would've killed to hear about it early. Now, for me it's kinda an echo chamber. There's some many people involved now that all hear things. Sources now-a-days can mean anyone tangentially related that is hearing something. Back in the day there weren't this many people running around.
I'll give you a great example. When I was in the building hearing these things I had people all the time reaching out and asking what I'm hearing. Well, it's like a game of telephone at that point. Am I in the know at that point?
I only pass along stuff I hear directly from people who are involved now, because I'm not an insider and I don't care to break news. I'm not selling anything, nor am I trying to get clicks, so I guess that calculus changes when you are.

If you check my join date, you'll see that the reporting around "it's happening" was when/why I joined. The Searchbitz and random rumors that popped up at the time (Durkin's cousin or whatever wearing UM gear at an Ohio gym etc) made for glorious, captivating reading.

Saw someone say this on twitter, but it's true: the problem with MSU insiders is they're all essentially MSU fanboys. Yes Webb, Bilas, and Lorenz, and others root for Michigan and aren't perfect, but they almost always know how to set their fandom aside when reporting on Michigan insider aspects.
