Quick note, he was the best PPG defenseman in the NTDP. The brother we lost, Sasha Pastujov, led the program in points and PPG this year.

He’s projected by most to go higher than 8th. I’ve rarely seen him slip outside the top 5 in most lists.

Ideally we’ll see both him and Power in AA this year.

That, or players saw an aging coach that could retire at any time and felt there were better opportunities out there.

Mel is naturally a better recruiter than Red. This was true when Mel was an assistant here. But even late career Red was able to pull in the one and done types we’d always gotten. Hughes, Werenski, Larkin, Connor. Where Red “fell off,” was reeling in the depth guys that stick around 3-4 years and are major contributors as seniors. The guys that really make up the core of your team and take on leadership roles for the young guys.

That’s not Red’s “fault.” It’s hard for late career coaches to bring those guys in. Red simply stayed too long, but he wanted to retire a few years ago but was asked to come back by the AD. So again, not his fault. Just set the program back a couple years but Mel was the perfect hire to bring them out of it. I’d argue Mel made just as much sense on paper as a “home run hire” as Harbaugh did in 2015
