I would expect the M defense to put enough pressure on Tag to force turnovers. He can be a loose cannon and I'd expect him to make some mistakes as a result.

Agreed. But the other side of that is that he’ll probably also wind up making some really good plays when something breaks down.

There’s likely going to be at least a handful of really annoying plays in this game. The trick is can Tagovailoa keep that up for an entire four quarters? Maybe, but I doubt it.

My guess is he’ll make a few ridiculous throws that we’re wondering how he managed to do that, but then his defense won’t be able to stop much of anything, and he’ll decide when they’re down by a few scores that it’s time to play hero ball. And the mistakes will come from there.

I mean, kinda? Passing and rushing are flipped between the two teams, and Michigan has been scoring more. This doesn't really tell the story on defense though. They've allowed 58 total points in 3 games between Buffalo, Charlotte, and SMU. Not great, Bob.

Apples and oranges, OP.

Besides Michigan having a statistically significant edge in scoring (you can make the argument that both U of M and MD had similarly absymal competition in the first 3 games)...

Michigan has been emptying the bench. We have something like 7 QBs with a pass attempt, 14 different rushers, and I didn't count the receivers. MD has been playing their starters and rotation guys.

And that's just the offense. MD defense is giving up points.

Michigan: 8 penalties for 69 yds

Maryland: 31 penalties for 271 yds

This stat line alone does not bode well for MD. If this stat holds on Saturday, Maryland has no chance in this game. Offensive penalties kill drives and defensive penalties sustain your opponent's drives.

They have the same number of yards gained per game (500), but Maryland has 6 fewer touchdowns, 16 vs. 22.  This seems to validate the impression that Maryland's defense is allowing a lot more yardage than M's, and thus leaving Maryland longer fields and less likelihood to score.

That and Maryland seems to lean pretty heavily on its throw game to move the ball.  Who knows how long the starters stay in for Maryland too, probably the vast majority of their game time thus far considering they were in a dogfight with SMU this weekend.

Not related to either school, but I checked the yards per game stat of our next opponent after Maryland. Iowa is 4th in yards allowed. However, they are dead last in yards gained. They've hardly played a murderers row of defenses either. They gained 150 yards against Iowa St, who gave up 320 yards against SE Missouri St. Iowa did gain 337 yards against Nevada, which isn't good, but not terrible either. Until you understand that Nevada gave up 616 yards to something called Incarnate Word one week earlier (a school I've literally never heard of previously). We all know Iowa's offense is bad, but the depths of their awfulness cannot be overstated.

In fact, Nevada has been outgained in every single game they've played so far. New Mexico State, Texas State, and Incarnate Word (FCS) all outgained Nevada.

Since we're doing the whole ESPN thing, FPI ranks NMSU dead last - worse than CSU, Hawaii, and UConn (but man, are they bad or what?).

Nevada has a bad football team.
