Michigan Football leads nation in attendance yet again
The NCAA has been keeping national attendance average rankings since 1949: 71 seasons.
Michigan has been #1 in 49 of 71 seasons measured.
44 of the last 46 years.
5th straight year.
Here is the Top-10 in national attendance in 2019

Does that count as a championship?
December 5th, 2019 at 5:20 PM ^
We cheat. And we care more about attendance than other schools.
December 5th, 2019 at 5:55 PM ^
We sure as hell cheated in the Dave Brandon era.
December 5th, 2019 at 10:26 PM ^
Can't prove it... Even if you could, everybody is handing out tickets with Coke Zeros and there's nothing anyone can say to change my mind.
December 5th, 2019 at 6:16 PM ^
I was at the Hoke era games and remember the boos when they'd announce the attendance. We all knew it was bullshit.
December 5th, 2019 at 10:20 PM ^
Right up there with those “Life Champions” rings Tennessee have out.
December 5th, 2019 at 5:18 PM ^
I'm frankly shocked Alabama came in at 95.7% of capacity. Can that be true?
December 5th, 2019 at 5:21 PM ^
Yeah, they’re actually having attendance “issues” (by their standards). They are set to shrink their capacity a bit I believe, and try to make the seats a bit more comfortable.
December 5th, 2019 at 6:33 PM ^
I remember Nick Saban during a press conference complaining about people not showing up
December 6th, 2019 at 6:02 AM ^
Bama's home non-conference schedule is usually trash featuring at least one FCS team and some combination of Arkansas and the Mississippi schools. Not too surprised people got bored of going
December 5th, 2019 at 6:47 PM ^
Maybe Alabama's cheapest seat in the end zone is $250.00 with a required "donation" of $500.00 per seat for the right to buy the ticket.
December 6th, 2019 at 9:52 AM ^
Actually, I think the escalating ticket prices throughout CF is getting to be a problem for many schools, not just Alabama. We're starting to see more and more empty seats throughout the country during TV telecasts. And I believe those numbers are on tickets sold, not actually game attendance. That Nebraska streak is BS and misleading as I've seen many empty seats in their stadium the last couple of years
December 5th, 2019 at 10:29 PM ^
Shockingly the students there find better things to do on a Saturday than pay money watch Bama beat SW Georgia School of Denistry 78-0
December 6th, 2019 at 6:26 AM ^
Hey, don't brush off those Fighting Dentists. They specialize in beating bigger opponents.
December 5th, 2019 at 5:19 PM ^
This is a great example as to why we should not be comfortable with at 9-3 every year. Tired of the "this is who we've always been" thing. We have the resources to compete with anybody if we choose.
December 5th, 2019 at 5:32 PM ^
Yet half the teams on that list are worse off than we are.
Why haven't they used their revenue to build annual playoff contenders?
December 5th, 2019 at 8:59 PM ^
I’m speaking to how some in the fan base are saying to accept that this is what we are and have always been. I’m saying we have the capacity to do more. Not arguing that it’s a direct correlation. But I appreciate the condescension
December 5th, 2019 at 9:22 PM ^
We know what you're saying . . . but it's just questionable logic.
Do a few thousand more fans per game really translate into more wins?
Should Syracuse be the best basketball program in the country, because they play in the Carrier Dome?
December 6th, 2019 at 3:39 PM ^
No but they shouldn't just accept being slightly above average when they have the resources and means to be more.
December 5th, 2019 at 5:30 PM ^
Tennessee built all that extra capacity just in case they should land Jeremy Pruitt, right? It was all part of a long-range strategy conceived many years ago, right?
December 5th, 2019 at 5:37 PM ^
They did it in the early-to-mid 90's when I was still in AA. It was a BFD.
December 5th, 2019 at 8:35 PM ^
Our AD sent them blueprints of Michigan Stadium with an upper deck as a warning.
I think we should build it and make the seats $20. Get the middle and working class back in the Big House.
December 5th, 2019 at 9:05 PM ^
Put the ole blue hairs in the upper deck so nobody is standing in their view.
December 6th, 2019 at 5:28 AM ^
And build some alumni housing into the stands while they’re at it (like the dorm rooms in Ohio Stadium? Do they still have that?). Last time I went to Homecoming I ended up paying over $300/nt for basically a Motel 6...
(/s)
December 5th, 2019 at 5:32 PM ^
Sigh, can we not talk about this. Those numbers are made up. It’s better to not shine a light here.
December 5th, 2019 at 5:34 PM ^
"MORE THAN IN ANYWHERE IN AMERICA TODAY"
December 5th, 2019 at 5:47 PM ^
No, it's "THE LARGEST CROWD WATCHING A FOOTBALL GAME ANYWHERE IN AMERICA TODAY."
December 5th, 2019 at 7:59 PM ^
always curious why, if they are going to make a sweeping statement like that, that they don't substitute out the word 'america', and instead, put in something like 'the planet' or 'the galaxy', etc. in fact, unless its one of those soccer world championships where i've read some of the stadiums allegedly hold like 150K folks, wouldn't it really be 'the largest crowd anywhere in world today. period'.
December 5th, 2019 at 8:56 PM ^
Actually, on Saturday they said "in the world" instead of "in America."
They must have checked the sports schedule in North Korea.
December 5th, 2019 at 10:46 PM ^
I heard those hungry dog packs tearing up government officials who little Kim does not like, even his uncle, can draw some pretty big crowds in NK.
December 5th, 2019 at 10:46 PM ^
I heard those hungry dog packs tearing up government officials who little Kim does not like, even his uncle, can draw some pretty big crowds in NK.
December 5th, 2019 at 9:29 PM ^
The complete statement was traditionally "THANK YOU FOR BEING PART OF THE LARGEST CROWD WATCHING A FOOTBALL GAME ANYWHERE IN AMERICA TODAY."
December 5th, 2019 at 5:46 PM ^
As a season ticketholder, the stadium looked pretty full this year, other than a couple of rows at the top of the student section. This is not 2014 where we're giving tickets away with the purchase of 2 Cokes.
December 5th, 2019 at 5:36 PM ^
Attendance at 103.6% capacity feels like when a dictator wins an election with 110% of the vote.
December 5th, 2019 at 5:41 PM ^
103.8% at Memorial Stadium (NE) to watch them lose to Indiana.
December 5th, 2019 at 5:58 PM ^
Yeah, apparently they count everybody on the grounds. That's how we get to 103%.
So I guess if anyone wants to challenge Michigan on attendence, all they have to do is hire more staff. Or grab some people off the street. "Hey you! What are you doing for the next couple of hours? I'll give you $20 to stand on this side of the fance."
December 5th, 2019 at 6:33 PM ^
They count the number of press passes given out as well.
December 5th, 2019 at 5:59 PM ^
People go to Tennessee games?
Go Blue.
December 5th, 2019 at 6:11 PM ^
Overall attendance is nice, but I think a factor to consider is "how nice" the non-football experience is for game attendees as well. The best analogy I can think of is the Chicago Cubs.
Wrigley Field is beautiful, the neighborhood around it is great, and they're a "classic" team with a nation wide footprint. That's awesome for making money if you're the team owner, but it kind of sucks if the goal is simply to win championships. It's basically an outdoor beer garden & people will buy Cubs swag even when they suck. Theyre's real no incentive necessarily for the team owner to build a championship machine.
Meanwhile, certain teams basically HAVE to win in order to get buts in the seats, sell over priced soft drinks, sell officially licensed merchandise, etc. The Chicago White Socks are a prime example. Same city as the Cubs, but it's a regional baseball club. The stadium sits right by the highway in a mediocre part of town, and the stadium itself is pretty sterile.
I love Michigan. I love (mostly) the game day experience minus the stadium RAWK. But sometimes I think the main reason the boosters, AD, and president are content to be "good" but not be more activist pushing for the NIL stuff & other legitimate reforms likely to make us truly "elite" is because they've got too much going for them. Michigan has such a nice enviornment, surrounding geography, and classic nation-wide fanbase, that--short of skidding to Rich Rod or Hokean levels--their revenues aren't likely to take any kind of major dive even if they drop another several in a row to Ohio State & Michigan fails to win any Big Ten Championship for another decade. The set-up is just too cushy.
December 5th, 2019 at 8:19 PM ^
Agreed. I have only been to IU, Purdue, Notre Dame and MSU...But none come close to the vibe that surrounds The Big House. And I am fine with "cushy".
December 5th, 2019 at 10:33 PM ^
I’m sorry but saying ND doesn’t have a vibe equal to the Big House is just sheer homerism.
I hate the Irish but the atmosphere at ND is pretty awesome.
December 5th, 2019 at 8:43 PM ^
I said this (as much) in an earlier thread...
We have a great product, except for the ultimate prize (of late). When you look at the acedemic level of the elite football schools, a couple are ok, the rest wouldn’t even be acedemic bowl eligible.
Our challenge is we run (seemingly) a clean program, following the rules AND maintaining an acedemic standard clearly is above all the “elite” football schools which hire players; that have stated (often) they don’t even go to classes.
It’s is good product, arguably the best program relative to our academic standing, and a damn cool fan experience.
Keep doing all the good things, the golden apple will follow.

Be nice to see that translate into some B1G championships
December 5th, 2019 at 6:35 PM ^
Hate to tell you all this, but the reported attendance figures at the game are NOT the number of people in the stadium. It never has been. It's the number of tickets sold plus some fudge factor accounting for people on the field like the band, staff, etc. The actual people in the Big House is much less than the inflated number reported in the 3rd quarter to the crowd. The Wall Street Journal did an extensive study and article on this based on actual number of scanned tickets at the gate. And the results clearly show that announced attendance is way higher at almost all schools than the number of butts sitting in the seats.

I've been at many games at Michigan Stadium when the attendance was announced at 109,000 or more and I could see a lot of empty seats around me. It supports what the article says. Believe what you want, but I think a lot of people have decided that sitting at home watching the game on a bigscreen HD TV is better than sitting in the stadium waiting for TV timeouts, all the travel expenses, overpriced food, parking, etc. etc.

I’m sorry to have to tell you this, but Baby Yoda isn’t real.
