Michigan Daily Asking Why Rosen Was Fired

Not sure what to think of this?  Seems pretty opaque.

"Seventy-one days before firing Mark Rosen, Michigan athletics director Warde Manuel signed the veteran volleyball coach to a five-year extension.

A Freedom of Information Act request submitted by The Michigan Daily revealed a five-year, $1,093,000 total salary contract that Rosen signed in October 2022. Even though Rosen’s first contract year under the deal began Sept. 1, 2022, the deal wasn’t signed by both University of Michigan President Santa Ono and Manuel until October. The contract ensured Rosen’s employment through Aug. 31, 2027.

“The parties have entered into this Agreement because the University desires to continue to employ the Head Coach for the period set forth below with the Head Coach’s assurance that he intends to serve the entire term of this Agreement, subject to the terms of this Agreement,” Section 1.01 of the contract reads. “The University agrees to employ the Head Coach and the Head Coach promises to be employed by the University upon the following terms and conditions.”

But Rosen’s firing on Dec. 20, 2022 went back on that commitment. So far, no reason for that firing is publicly available. In the same FOIA request, the University’s FOIA office told The Daily that no termination letter for Rosen exists."

Between Mark getting fired, Erin getting hired and now a double dip of a Daily article. This is the most coverage of volleyball I've ever seen on this blog

Old news for some

New news for others

Anyway, hear and enjoy new Metallica

Actually, it's precisely the opposite.

Michigan's FOIA office is notorious at stonewalling and ignoring even the most simple and straightforward of requests. FOIA laws exist to provide transparency and information on the operations of public institutions like UM, and we should in no way be proud of the fact that the university has turned being evasive and opaque into a fine art.

I don't think you read his post correctly, as you are agreeing with him right after saying "it's precisely the opposite."

I welcome your joining with the rest of us, who have always thought that we should in no way be proud of the fact that the university has turned being evasive and opaque into a fine art.  Glad to know you've seen the light.

Uhhh... Their post suggests that it's good that Michigan stonewalls folks. Because to them that's what FOIA offices should be doing, making it harder and not handing out information.

"Seen the light"? Don't know where I've ever praised Michigan's FOIA office for doing this, so I'm not sure what your point is

You’re actually wrong, my post wasn’t suggesting it’s a good thing. It also wasn’t suggesting it’s a bad thing. It was a question about what’s weird in the office being a black hole, followed by a statement meaning every time I’ve seen FOIA request mentioned it’s been in a negative manner…so it being a black hole isn’t weird, they’re all black holes from my limited experience.

At best, another head-scratcher by Warde. He just seems in over his head. He's reactionary, indecisive and sometimes when he actually does act he seems to do so with poor judgement. College athletics is wrestling with many big issues right now. Michigan needs a top tier AD. Warde isn't one. Probably just the Peter Principle at work. Thank him for his service, write him a big check and go get Mike Bohn from USC.
