Michigan in the bowl projections

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

In the updated bowl projections, ESPN has Michigan playing Texas in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl in Tempe by one guy. And in the Outback Bowl in Tampa against Georgia.

Jerry Palm of CBS Sports has Michigan in the Outback Bowl against Georgia as well.

A game against Texas would be cool but that would mean Michigan would have an even worse record than they do now.

An App State matchup would mean 2 games in a row versus those firebreathers - since we open with them in 2014.  Texas would be ironic as these are the 2 programs that recrooooot so awesome but churn out 3-4 loss seasons like its nobody's business.  I give the edge to Texas though in underachieving since they have Texas and we have to borrow from Ohio.  Why anyone wants to play Texas with GERG or Arizona with RR is beyond me - all it would take is a 6 point offense against GERG or 48 points against by RR to bring up all sorts of riffs.

We'd all think "oh haha GERG! We will score all the time!" and then the game would start at Texas' defense would shut us down. Gerg would put that beaver in his LBs face and the next play that LB would pick-6 Devin and run into the waiting arms of many beautiful women. We would be subject to endless clips of Mack Brown saying "Michigan didn't have the talent Texas has" as we lose 42-13

but exacerbated by who they were playing. Clemson and LSU are great offenses. They are 40th in DFEI, which is certainly not good but it's not quite atrocious.

That offense is more what I'm referring to though. That offense would shred most B1G defense's. MSU, Michigan, Wiscy (with a healthy Borland) and OSU would probably be the only B1G teams who could keep them under 40.

Yep.  Once you get past the Rose and Capital One its just a matter of which mediocre bowl your ho hum team is going to.  If anything let's get out of Florida just to change it up a bit.  But in terms of any prestige - that is out the window this year.  Maybe we can get something better than Minnesota though - woo hoo!

UM: Started 2-0, ranked as high as 11th supposed to be a B1G 10 threat and maybe a National Championship sleeper

Since: Almost lost to Akron and UCONN (3-14), blows a 7 point lead to PSU with 52 seconds to go. Manhanddled and embarresed by MSU

Texas: starts 1-2, wants to fire their coach, wins 5 in a row, including a solid win over now #10 Oklahoma. #1 in their conference.

either Wisky or MSU make a BCS bowl. Then the B1G's problems would return. Every time a B1G gets upgraded to a 2nd BCS bowl, we move up one level, that is we move up to the level of our incompetence.

I see OSU, MSU, Wisky ahead of us for sure. The Nebraska game this weekend is for the right to play in the Outback (assuming Wisky or MSU get a BCS bowl). NW and Iowa are definitely below us (for now, gulp!)

Minnesota? Terrible draw. They can't even get home games sold out most of the time. Nebraska packed the place for them. Unless Minn is 2 games ahead of us, it won't happen. Fair or not, we did beat them 38-12 if that matters.

What sucks about this whole thread is not the Maize's opening (thank you) - it's that we're debating with 4 games to go whether we'll even be in a DECENT bowl game.

p.s. you may be surprised about GERG's Texas D. I watched the Oklahoma game. He's doing pretty well with a bunch that got destroyed at BYU.

@Iowa is no gimme for UM.  Would that be Hoke's greatest road win evvvvah at UM?  @NW I still think is dangerous but maybe I just have nighmares of 2012's NW offense ... without their RB they seem neutered but you have to think that team wins a game someplace in the Big 10, and its at their place... and they just have Nebraska a fight.  Seriously we could be talking Tax Slayer bowl or below if 2-2 is the next 4 games which I think is probable (loss at Iowa and OHio, win vs Nebraksa and at NW)

They're probably going to be 11-1 heading into Indy.  Lots of the teams in front of them still have to play each other.  Alabama still has Auburn and LSU.  Auburn also has Georgia left.  LSU also still has to play A&M.  Missouri still has to play A&M.  South Carolina and Clemson still have to play.  Either Missouri, South Carolina or possibly Georgia will play Bama in the SEC title game.  Oklahoma still has Baylor and Oklahoma St.  Baylor and Oklahoma St have to play each other.  Miami is probably going to have to play FSU again.  There's going to be a lot teams in front of MSU picking 1 or 2 more losses before the end of he regular season.

If we can beat imploding Nebraska this weekend, we'll likely be the 4th B1G team chosen (behind OSU, MSU, and Wiscy...PSU is ineligible).

MSU could lose to OSU and still get invited to the Rose Bowl if OSU went to play in the National Championship. If they want to keep a Big Ten team their choices would be an MSU fanbase that has been pining for the Rose Bowl forever or Wisconsin to go for like a fourth straight year. Who would you pick?

Why? Because the BWW Bowl isn't a "good bowl". First off, these are just useless projections.

Plenty of football left to be played. Michigan does not face a defense like the one they did yesterday, for the rest of the year. The best defense they play is iowa IMO. The doom and gloomers on here will probably laugh, but there still is a chance for a BCS at-large bid if Michigan wins out.

But back to my point. You don't turn down the extra practices. Or the bowl money. That's idiotic. And the notre dame thing to do.

The conqu'ring hereos don't conquer when convienient to them.

should we win out.

Before the MSU debacle, I was thinking we had about a 5% chance of playing in the title game had we won out. (In 2003, the 2nd participant in the National Championship Game had to come from a two-loss team.)

Now to the hard part, winning out.

Before the MSU game, I figured we had a (@MSU 0.3) * (Neb 0.6) * (@NW 0.5) * (@Iowa 0.5) * (OSU 0.3) * (B1G 0.25) = 3 / 1000 chance of winning out.  Make it fat tails and say 1 /100 for a total probability of less than 1 in 1000.

Also, before the MSU game I thought finishing with two losses would give us a chance at a BCS at-large, with the order of losses not so important.  In fact, should we win out from here, getting the two losses out of the way might help.  Now back to the hard part.

(Neb 0.6) * (@NW 0.5) * (@Iowa 0.5) * (OSU 0.25) = about a 4% chance.

fall out of the Outback/Capital One duet.  I think that as of right now, both Ohio and Staee are going to BCS games, Ohio either the Rose or Championsip and MSU either the Rose or Orange as a 2 loss at large.  I think it is Michigan v. Wisconsin for the Capital One bowl with the loser in the Outback and probably Iowa/Minnesota in the Buffalo Wild Wings.  I think we go 9-3 if we can withstand the Lewan suspension in the Nebraska game and then take a pretty substantial beating from Ohio.
