Bowl games are terrible. Who would you like to see take over as Bball coach next year and why, once Juwan is gone?

Warde is not going to fire Howard midseason (or probably at the end of the season). You need to accept that.

Martelli, at this stage, is no better a coach than anyone else on the bench. The entire coaching staff needs to be broomed at season's end, but I have my reservations that any changes will be made outside of Phil's likely retirement.

I do think Martelli right now is marginally better than Howard, seems like we got even worse when Howard resumed HC duties.

But regardless, get rid of Howard so we can start a coaching search in earnest and have a caretaker/interim, Martelli or someone else if you prefer.

While the Michigan men's basketball coaching position is a good one, would any good coach wanna come here knowing the NIL is nowhere near as good as many of the other program's?

Clearly you’re removed from club basketball, high level HS basketball, and college recruiting…

NIL is way more important in basketball than it is in football. 5 players versus 22. Get two superstars in basketball and you can win it all.

If you won’t or can’t play that game, then you need a system guy and an admin that’s comfortable making the tourney from time to time and building with team guys and depth of average players that can out team a couple of superstars.

see, eg, Calipari versus Beilein

I don’t know if “important” is the right word but rather it requires less NIL money to be good in hoops.

Football is a completely different level…why you ask? Because nothing compares to filling a stadium with 100k fans at least seven times a year on top of 1 million people tuning in via television/streaming……nothing compares to that which is why football is driving conference realignment….football is way more important than any other sport.

Matt Painter would be a good example of a coach who is maximizing the potential of his players. I highly doubt Painter is wading in the same waters as Kansas, UK, etc. we aren’t going to get Painter, but there are other good coaches out there that would get Michigan back to where it was under Beilein.

Recruiting has taken a downturn.

The entire 2023 class was a guy processed from OSU who hasn't been able to even see the floor because he's so overwhelmed at this level. Lee Aaliya will probably never set foot in A2.

The two 2024 commits before Rooths (Anderson and Brooks) are very meh. Anderson appears to have great range, but he makes Dug look big and doesn't appear to have the handles to be a PG. Brooks (Phat Phat) is a Tum Tum clone; a low rated defense-first, defense-second type with no shot whatsoever. Rooths is very talented and legitimately a great get, though it was a little weird that he never had any bluebloods in his top groups.

Having written all that, I agree that this coaching staff is extremely stale and needs a major overhaul if Howard is retained.

Anderson is supposedly a legit 6’0+ now and he’s playing on a really good team in high school now and he’s been tearing it up. Rooths would be a great get and Brooks being a defensive minded guard is exactly what we need right now. There need to be more pieces added to them but recruiting isn’t the issue, it’s roster/positional management and lack of fundamentals.

The coach at FAU. But I think Juwan gets another year because of the health issue. I don't see Warde dumping him in March. I'm ready for a chance but don't believe it will happen.

I would like to see the coach at FAU do something without 5th 6th and 7th year players on his team.   Not saying he isn't a good coach just when you have a team of starters that are like 22 years and older vs. 18 19 year olds that is a big advantage.   Obviously I am exaggerating a little on the 7rh year but he has players that are older then the Detroit Pistons starting lineup the last 2 years.   Minus Bogs

Honestly, the Michigan BB program has no identity. If we’re not playing the NIL game, which is especially important where 1/5 or 2/5 elite players can win the whole thing, we need an identity.

3 and D? 60 feet of terror? Take the air out of the ball and bore other team to death? Pick a thing and let that be your thing.

Trying to run NBA sets, without NBA talent, isn’t working. Having tweener athletes isn’t working. Big guys who aren’t athletic. Small athletic guys who get abused on D. Just seems like all positions think they’re more athletic than they are and they turn the ball over when they decide to just put the head down and go.

Totally confused by what this team is trying to be and trying to do.

tl;dr we need a system coach who can recruit players to fit the system, and where recruits that may not be NBA athletes know they fit and get playing time and want to go..

On basketball kids want money and NIL is more important in BBall compared to any other sport.   Michigan and especially Juwan have been held back by that and admissions or whatever else.  So until that gets fixed I don't think we are going to be a championship contender year in and out.  No matter who the coach is  Game is so different from when JB was here and that is why he left.   We should be better but when you are held back by your University there is only so much you can do about getting certain players.

I feel like all of college basketball is trying to figure out how to operate with the new NIL rules. Since Juwan has been head coach here, North Carolina has gone to the ncaa championship game as an 8 seed and then missed the tourney the next year. Kentucky has also missed the tourney. MSU had one of (if not the worst) start to their season since Izzo has been coach. I know it has been a couple years and we aren’t going in the right direction, but Juwan won the B10 by 3 games, was a 1 seed in the tourney, and went to a couple sweet 16s in a row. I wouldn’t mind giving him another year and I wouldn’t mind if he and Michigan parts ways, but we are asking for trouble if we start cycling through coaches every 5 years
