Michigan's Full Letter Responding to Big Ten

Submitted by mjw on November 9th, 2023 at 10:41 AM

Wetzel released the full version of Michigan's letter to the Big Ten on Twitter.  It has been reposted elsewhere and I found it easiest to read via https://footballscoop.com/news/here-is-michigans-10-page-letter-to-the-big-ten.  The main points have been summarized in articles, but figured all of the Mgolawyers (and probably everyone else) on here would want to see the full arguments.

This is unrelated to the thread, but I have 2 tickets available for the game this weekend. The two other people that I was going to be going with can't make it anymore. I still plan on going and would prefer to sell the tickets to two Michigan fans. Anybody know the safest/best way to do this?

For those that may be interested, the tickets are in section WJU, Row 58. For some reason the seats are separated by one (i.e. the seats are for seat 28 and seat 26), but I am sure it won't be a problem to switch over one seat with someone.

It’s a strong letter. There’s no surprise in there except reference to a channel from a former OSU coach to a former M coach as info on OSU’s sign stealing.

I thought the emphasis that the NCAA investigation should be over this fall was new information. The expectation had been that this would be drawn out, which was part of the justification for the urgency of the B1G to suspend Harbaugh.  If the NCAA investigation can be wrapped in a couple weeks and Michigan can respond, this just make the B1Gs involvement all the more ridiculous

After seeing that the B1G needs time to go over the “lengthy” (10 pages from UM, 8 pages from Harbaugh’s attorney) responses, and then seeing the highlights of the responses, I feel better about the likelihood that the B1G tries to suspend before the game this weekend, or tries to preemptively disqualify UM from the B1G Championship.

I would not be surprised if Petitti tries to offer a one game suspension for the Maryland game to save face and is told to gfh, and then UM gets the slap on the wrist of fines and probation this whole situation so richly deserves.  UM may offer to pay for the in helmet radios for the conference and potentially any non-con opponents, but that would be extremely benevolent and wholly unnecessary.

With this evidence?  No, the B1G should not even fine or put UM on probation.  They'll want to in order to save face, but they'd have to also punish Purdue, OSU, Rutgers (and likely others) equally.

Honestly, the B1G should be writing Michigan and Coach Harbaugh a letter of apology and begging them not to pursue legal action against the conference and the actors that started this whole mushroom cloud of bullshit.

This case is far thinner than the press made it out to be (surprise!) and everyone involved with it should feel very bad.

Don't pay for the in helmet radios. Instead, Ono should offer that despite the school and Harbaugh having done nothing wrong, the AD will make a $100,000 donation to the Children's Hospital and release a statement that the school considers the matter closed. Go ahead, B1G, fight against the Children's Hospital.

Agreed!  Obviously he probably had an attorney draft this, but this letter so perfectly states what we've all been thinking/hoping for the past three weeks.  After reading that, I do not know how there could be anything that comes from the BIG.

But totally agree, Warde deserves a kudos here. Also, OSU and Ryan Day have helped galvanize the Michigan factions into a united front. They should also get a minor tip of the hat.

Joking aside, hopefully this has helped heal any issues between Warde and Harbaugh.  Who would have thunk that an action meant to chase Harbaugh out of AA would only strengthen Michigan moving forward.

Absolutely wild that the Big Ten has only provided Michigan with four pieces of evidence, three of which appear to be meaningless (pp. 6-7).

Also good to see Michigan take the position that if what Stalions did is illegal, so is the Rutgers/OSU/Purdue collusion (p. 9).

I particularly enjoyed this: "We have not seen or been provided virtually any of the evidence on which you purport to rely in your email.  We have also not seen any of the videos allegedly taken for scouting purposes -- and as far as we can glean from your email, you have not seen them either.

What are we even doing here Tony?

I follow the USS New Jersey's You tube channel.  One relatively short video every Monday-Friday, with occasional longer ones thrown in at random times.  I think the curator who narrates has a good style, and you never know what each video will be about.  This summer, for instance, they found like 20 pounds of keys in a box and had to match them up with what they went to.

It is very interesting, given how there has not even been a NOA issued, and fall is like.... over.  Michigan and the NCAA are likely at the negotiating table close to 24/7 finding a way to merge this with Burger-gate, fast track helmet radio communication, and put this fire out with something agreeable.  It would be really dumb for the BIG to throw this grenade.

I can't tell if that's fast or not.  What's the normal process order?  If it's: 1) investigation/fact finding 2) NOA 3) 90 days 4) response then 5) negotiations about it and finally 6) settlement/appeal, then step 1 wrapping up soon doesn't imply a quick overall resolution.

Maybe I'm wrong or misinformed about that.  Would be happy to be corrected.

The statement that the investigation is set to be concluded this fall appears to imply more than Step 1.  I think you are intended to read between the lines.   I think the message is that "we intend to work with the NCAA to pour some water on this pretty quickly."

There can be steps 1-6, but there can also just be a deal.

If it's over that quickly, wouldn't that amount to a good thing? Unless there is video evidence or something else major out there that we don't know about, it seems like they are just trying to see if Harbaugh or the coaches knew about this...and if they didn't know, then slap on a show cause on Stallions and work on headsets for 2024.
