Michigan's D.Shaw Finalist for prestigious award

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

Michigan's Dorian Shaw is a finalist for the Lowe's CLASS award.  This award is given out annually to those seniors who excel on and off the field.  CLASS is an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The only other Big 10 chosen is Illinois' Danielle Zymkowitz.. The other candidates are: Stephanie Brombacher (Florida), Alisa Goler (Georgia), Chelsea Kelley (Radford), Brittany Lastrapes (Arizona), Kristine Priebe (Georgia Tech), Jenn Salling (Washington), Taylor Schlopy (Georgia) and April Setterlund (Boston). The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 candidates that were announced in February.

Congratulations Dorian.  We are all proud of you.  Thanks for all the great memories.

When I saw the thread title, I thought Michael Shaw had inexplicably been named on the Doak Walker preseason watch list.

This is much better.

only one that has complained.  Most people on here know that I create threads only softball related.  I rarely see football, basketball in many thread titles.  He will get over it or just stop reading.

BTW: I am a male, born and raised in Michigan, watched Bo's 1969 tosu game with my dad and current Rackham student.  I will be attending many M softball games to update everyone.  This could be another special year.

Please keep it up. Moving to Wyoming means that it's hard to keep up with any Michigan sport other than football and basketball. I can't speak for anyone else, but I appreciate your posts.

Bold statement. I was confused; I thought Michael Shaw was named a preseason Doak Walker finalist as well.

Here's a question: Are my friends, who are all also U of M alums, but don't follow non-revenue sports, Wal-Mart Wolverines? I don't think so. If you think so, I think you need to refine your definition of that perjorative term.

FTR, I will watch M Softball when we are in the WCWS/on tv.

Why don't you keep your "truer blue than thou" comments to yourself and just give the softball updates.

While it's nice that you provide exposure to a sport that is not usually discussed, you lose a lot of that goodwill by bashing a huge chunk of the fanbase and readers of this website.  A lot of whom are probably as "real" wolverines as you, whatever the hell that even means

Loved a lot of your posts before, but that statement right there was way out of line. Try getting some class before posting again, please. Or just leave; either one would be fine with me.

As an aside, who the fuck would possibly +1 that comment? I'd love an explination from someone who did.

I like what you're doing and have no real complaint and don't really think a Softball tag is that necessary, but when citing a specific player with a common name it'd be better just to use their full name in the thread title... or at least name the award.

for it to be misleading there would need to be intent on my part, of which, there was none.  I only start softball related threads, so there is nothing misleading about any title I have.  But thanks for the +1 anyways.  I hope you enjoyed it.

Aside from the fact that there is a football player named Shaw (I'm assuming you knew that), if you view the board from the frontpage (as opposed to mgoblog.com/mgoboard), you can't see who posted the thread. I think that's where some of the confusion is coming from. If there's a generic title on the board about a player named Shaw, I think everyone is going to assume it's the RB (especially if they don't or can't see who posted it).

Also, sidenote, generally speaking people don't take too kindly to the use of "Walmart Wolverine" as a derogatory term.

And a sidenote to the sidenote, I like hearing the updates about the softball team and appreciate your posts.

Yeah, I agree on both accounts. I negged the "douchepipe" guy already. And it seems like lately that every other thread on the board quickly slips to the edge of a (usually totally pointless) meltdown pretty quick.

We need the Spring Game or at least more info from practice or something, otherwise this board is going to tear itself apart.

No, you don't need intent to mislead. Being misled relies on the state of mind of the person being misled, not whether one meant to mislead. You would need intent if you were trying to commit fraud of some sort, which no one is accusing you of here.

I didnt intend for this thread to get out of control.  The point here is that one of the better softball athletes we have had in a few years is getting national exposure.

She certainly deserves a discussion thread about her contributions to the school and sport.  It is a shame that we get one negative comment and the attention gets diverted away from what is important.

I realize people are more likely to click on things with football-sounding titles, but it's kind of low.  I like following the softball team, but I've felt duped a few times now and I don't like it.

Thanks for the info on the CLASS award (which I wasn't aware until now).

When I saw the word "prestigious" I assumed that Shaw was up for a Braverman grant.  Silly me.

The spring and non-revenue sports do not get the attention as the other sports do.  I would not expect the causal fan to know about this award.  However, in the collegiate softball world, it is a big deal.  Winning the award does not increase a softball player's salary potential because the professional draft occurs before this award winner is announced.

I would not even posted save for a Michigan student is a finalist.
