That's a pretty big receiver. More possession type receiver, or does he have wheels from his days at QB?

Also, he could have gone to GT, so I think we should naturally anoint him the next Calvin Johnson!

Most fans figured he'd be a RB at his size and based on being a HS running QB, but Harbaugh has talked about him as a WR and compared him to Anquan Boldin.   Could be a very interesting offensive player if he is a natural receiver and can run after the catch.    So a possession receiver built like a FB.

Slot/H type of WR that could be a play-maker on offense.  Even if Hudson leaves (certainly less likely after missing so much time), we still have Glasgow with Quinten Johnson and Joey Velazquez coming in next year, and Cine a possibility.  Seems like a more open path to playing time since we are light on slot receivers.

Anyone know where McGrone is practicing?

Harbaugh confirming Barrett warmed up with the receivers does not mean Barrett has been formally moved to receiver.

Dude could be a receiver now but "you saw correctly" does not necessarily mean that. He could have a package. He could be travel depth on a day where they were short on bodies.

It seems to be a curious move to me. Barrett is a powerful, athletic kid and will present some interesting matchups. I do see significant benefit in using him on bubble screens-as opposed to the typical WR who goes down at the first sign of a tackler.

Would be a curious move if Hudson were to go pro leaving us with one viper next season (Glasgow), unless they move somebody else in there. Sam Webb thinks Woods should drop down to viper, or maybe McGrone could do it. Another option might be the big time recruit (Crouch) they are supposedly in on who is a 5-star athlete RB/LB.

A lot of people took the board after last game to complain about the almost complete lack of short passing game to the middle. Moving Barrett over, and recruitment of Jackson and Gray shows that had the exactly the same concern and suspect that Harbaugh wants it too but we are simply bad at it right now, especially with Evans out.

We currently have Perry and Martin available. Your statement would imply that neither of them are capable of providing/producing in the short passing game. I find that hard to believe.

That in fact may be the case, but it would definitely be surprising and disappointing.

Northwestern's system has a bunch of dudes in short/medium zone drops over the middle so I don't get that complaint for this game.

Michigan was over 8 YPA with some miscues on medium/big plays that were there. There's a case to be made they should have thrown it 5-10 more times but the passing scheme was really good.

I think Jimmy wants more physical receivers.  The blocking is terrible and for whatever reason the UM receivers have a hard time getting open.

"Michael Barrett moving from viper to receiver."

Probably more accurate to say that, for the moment, he is practicing with the receiving group.  Kid is obviously a natural athlete, and can do a lot of things.  He might stick there - but until we get to Fall 2019 practices, I bet there are many options for ways that Mr. Barrett might contribute on the field in the future.

I was confused about the move to viper in the first place. He needs the ball in his hands. That said, he seems pretty big to play receiver full-time. I saw him as primarily a RB playing WR and maybe even a little QB on the side (pretty good HS QB).
