META-ish: Ace on panel for CFS/ME event at U-M tomorrow

Hey everyone. U-M is doing a very great thing, putting on a series of free-to-all events for what they call Investing In Ability month. Here's the whole schedule:

I'll be on tomorrow morning's Chronic Fatigue and Related Syndromes expert panel. The details:

October 5: Chronic Fatigue and Related Syndromes: An Expert Panel Discussion

  • Time: 11:00am - 12:30pm
  • Location: Frankel Cardiovascular Center, Danto Auditorium
  • Presenters: Tiffany Braley, MD – Clinical Assistant Professor, Medical School, Department of Neurology, Daniel Clauw, MD – Director of Chronic Pain and Fatigue Research Center, Professor, Medical School, Department of Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine (Rheumatology), and Department of Psychiatry, Ann Kratz, PhD - Assistant Professor, Medical School, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Ace Anbender, sports blogger and individual with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Moderator: Donna Omichinski

I realize the timing won't work for those with a standard 9-5 work schedule, but if you happen to find yourself free around campus tomorrow, it'd be amazing to see some people in the crowd other than doctors and medical students (not that I'm not very happy to see them there, too!).

If you'd like to learn a little more, I did a Q&A on Twitter yesterday to help prepare myself for the event—this is my first time appearing publicly as an advocate. The thread starts here.

Hope to see you there.

Hmmm.... I get that you are a sports blogger AND that you suffer from an awful disease, but calling yourself an "individual?"  MR. BIG SHOT GETTIN' TOO GOOD FOR US, IS HE?

Seriously, though: I wish I were in Ann Arbor for this. I'd love to hear about 6 of those panels.

Bravo!

Just last week I again brought you up with my fellow-sufferer buddy, who'd asked if I could check with my doctor-sister about finding an advocate in an issue (I think dealing with insurance companies withholding or limiting drugs that actually help). Fortunately all was straightened out without needing the advocate (the friend's current doctor is knowledgeable and sympathetic, unlike previous ones, and knows she's using the medications appropriately).

It's not my sister's field, but she's a curious doc and couldn't help going "down the black hole" [i.e., once she got started she couldn't stop] doing research on the current state of research, the growing number of active NIH research grants, etc., and thinking of former colleagues/med. school classmates (one pain specialist, the other a rheumatologist) who might have been able to help guide her.

So glad you can represent the actual sufferers, as the skeptical scientists are finally recognizing that it is, in fact, not "all in your head."

Would love to be there.  Too bad the subway doesn't go to Ann Arbor.

META-ish: Ace speaks about Ace in third person; announces Ace will be joining Michigan as a GA wide receivers coach so that Ace can teach Ace's students about the exclusive skill of pronoun aversion.

;)

Seriously, I'm really happy to see that you're able to do this and I hope that the panel goes well.  We miss you on the podcasts. :)
