META: Downvoting button isn't a "disagree" button

Submitted by reshp1 on

Looks like the voting system is back (WOOHOO!!!)

Hopefully this will help restore the quality of comments and discussions to a degree, but that'll only happen if we don't abuse the system. If we just neg everyone we disagree with, it'll just be a pissing match in another form. So, please, only use the votes responsibly.

EDIT: It looks like the function is only available for diary comments at the moment. Hopefully it'll get rolled out to the front page and board soon. The point still stands.

Hell no!  I'm excited about the downword mobility.  As in, all of our recruits look like Justin Bieber's younger brother.  Kate Upton is too fat.  Fire Mattison and let Borges call plays on both sides of the ball.  And for Brian, Dennis Northfleet is a poser.

I noticed it in the Diary threads but not the Board, is this correct?

EDIT: more than I have seen this too.

I'm not just going to follow your decrees because you have a strong preference for how people should use a feature. Are you really so much of a delicate flower that you can't take disagreement in the form of a down arrow?

I voted on some random comments in the diaries and point totals did not change. I wonder if this is going to be one of those stepwise restores, if you will. Either way, nice to see it back in some form.

EDIT: I can now see voting for all comments on Chrome.

I know this is going to sound hopelessly naive and idealistic, but hopefully a culture of people who value quality dissenting opinions over crappy ones, even if they agree with them can take root here. It's not without precedent, Reddit (more so in the earlier days) has a lot of sub-reddit communities that are very good about using the voting system in that way, so it can happen if everyone buys in.

You seem to have a lot of opinions about this blog despite only being here for one day. Also, nearly every one of your comments have been either contrarian for the sake of being contrarian or trollish. There's a way to disagree with people and to be opinionated without being annoying. Unfortunately for you, you don't seem to be very good at that. For the record, I didn't down vote you, and I don't down vote people unless it is blatantly offensive or inflammatory.

You've read this blog for six years, but decided to make an account yesterday and rack up 100 or so comments, and comment on almost every thread? Were you saving all of those insightful comments for six years? I'm sincerely not trying to be a dick, and I clearly am struggling, but I have a hard time believing you're not an already banned poster on a new account or an intentional troll. If you are a truly new and misguided poster, I'd be sorry for being a dick, but since you've been here for 6 years, you should get why you're annoying a lot of people.

No, Spock, people are downvoting you because you are being petulant and adding nothing to the discussion. And the fact that you have a join date of yesterday and are being petulant and adding nothing to the discussion. Or because you have a join date of yesterday after being previously banned and are adding nothing to the discussion. Get the common theme?
