META: Brian's Best Metaphor

Submitted by BradyIsNumberT… on September 4th, 2021 at 10:31 AM

Long-time listener first-time caller: Watching "The Last Noob" on Roblox with my kid last night I started noodling on Brian's best metaphor.  I am going with Number 98 being Devin's Crown of Thorns.  I'll hang up and listen.

MOD EDIT - First, don't make me do this shit from my phone, folks. I am not at home obviously and I am old and my eyes suck. Second, anything about the blog or its creators / staff is "META". - LSA

"Dong punch" started out with a literal dong punch but became metaphorical immediately. The original article establishing the metaphor was 2009. A dozen years and many repeated punches later it still applies. And it hurts.

I thought “Death by a Thousand Paper Cuts” to describe the 2013 IU basketball game was brilliant. That game really felt like it just one more thing had gone right they would’ve won. And it felt like there were 1000 tiny things that all went wrong to leave it that precariously perched at the end.

OP, I think the topic is fine and interesting, but I think you invited criticism by posting it on game day.  If this had been posted T-Thu, it would have been better received.

I'll try to think about it during commercials and give you an answer, but I'm sure I will suffer from recency bias.  IMHO Brian was at the height of his not-inconsiderable writing powers around 2014-2016, and my memory isn't nearly good enough to remember details from then.

A related topic for another time would be best meme or catch phrase, which would be much easier because, by definition, those are phrases that get repeated, and are more likely tobe remembered.

WTF??

I simply just now stumbled across this while checking someone else's posting history.

If it hadn't been for Seth sending you yesterday to Bolivia, I would have taken the same action today.

You might be earning a permanent ban.  I'm going to check the timing of Seth's action yesterday and then make the decision.
