META Autoplay Ads

Submitted by Shop Smart Sho… on

MGoBlog is one of the few sites I turn my adblocker off for, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.  However, over the last week or so, the banner ad at the top has turned into an unmuteable video ad.  I'm wondering if it has happened to others as well.

I'm also wondering if we can convince Seth and/or Brian to get rid it.  While I understand the need for ads to create revenue, I think this type of ad runs the risk of having those of us who have turned off our adblock to turn it back on.

Just a thought.

This is on my work computer (which is why I would care about nsfw stuff in the first place). Best I can figure is most of my browsing history is electronics and electrical engineering related stuff. They probably figure the odds are good I'm a lonely dork.

These ads are much smarter now. In a thread where they were talking about that fat PSU kicker having an eating disorder, I immediately got an add for clinics at the top of the screen.

I routinely get Sparty ads all of the time. I never go to their site. Its based on all of the Sparty comments on this board. I cleared my cache and I still get the ads. I click the ad then click the option to never show it again, I still get the ads.

What the he'll is ad blocker? Is that a totally separate browser?

I'm worried now about turning off the adblocker anywhere. As we're infatuated with charts, I'd love to see one that shows annualized revenue by user depending on number of daily visits/impressions. I could then look and see, by my usage, how much to give to the Beveled Guilt so that I can keep my adblocker on...

... gets an average Revenue per thousand page views of $1-$3 in ads. So, I'd try to calculate your monthly page views, then devide by 1000 to come up with your monthly contribution. For example, if you view 3000 pages per month, you'd pony up $9 (3000/1000 *$3).

Right now, my ads are the Alumni Association and Amazon, probably because I was renewing my membership, shopping for Christmas and finding creative ways to make January a very lean month over and above the protests of my kids. Definitely influenced by recent browsing habits.

For those of you who use chrome, this is my favorite chrome customization, bar none.  Just go to chrome://flags and use ctrl+f to search for "Tab audio muting" and choose to enable that option, and the little speaker symbol on your tabs will become clickable to mute the tab. No more searching for mute buttons, ever.

That being said, I do agree that some of the ads are shitty. Didn't expect moms to advertise with mostly naked women masquerading as t-shirt models.

For like, months now my ads (here and pretty much everywhere else) have been for a minimalist wallet company. I purchased a minimalist wallet on Etsy about a week after I made the first google search and they just won't go away.
