Memory Lane: Searchbits

Submitted by greensborohill1 on

As fans, one of the only things we're really left with from our fandom are the memories. Really, even the tangible things (t-shirts, magazines, etc.) are there as to trigger those memories. My greatest memory as a sports fan was June 12, 2011; I'll never forget it. I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried, because my personal favorite sports figure of all-time had been through so much and had suffered endless criticism for being "soft" & a "choker", as the memories fade from that time I'll do my best to hold on to them. But I digress.

I still remember where I was when we got the definitive Searchbits "It's happening". My wife and daughters had just dropped my parents off at the airport in Charlotte after they had spent two weeks with us for Christmas. I asked my mom to stay through new years but she's too used to Hawaii weather. We had about a two hour drive to get back home to Greensboro so we decide to stop off at Chili's for dinner. Being the bad parent/husband that I am I remember popping open my MGoBlog app and was absolutely giddy to final get the definitive word!

These last couple of days as we get closer to the anniversaries of Jim, I've been using the handy search function to bring those memory triggers back. Below is the link to searchbits from 12/23/14, fun stuff for sure!

I did this a couple weeks ago and it was amazing

I recommend going into any searchbits and click the "2014 coaching fiasco" tag at the top. Doing so will get you all the searchbits and other related coaching search posts. If you start from the beginning and go through all of them (highly recommended) you really get to see the full arc of our coaching change, from "Harbaugh is a pipe dream" to "it's happening".

Interestingly, Brian started posting coaching change posts right after the Minnesota game, well before it was a foregone conclusion Hoke would be fired.

It's only a good memory because we got Harbaugh. It was a slow build up that ended the best way possible. Had it resulted in some other coach, search bits would be a bad memory.

Still hard to believe even after Harbaugh has been here for a season -- it's a lot of fun reading back through Brian's "searchbits" (click on the "Coaching fiasco 2014" tag) and re-living the excitement of those days.

And to the OP -- June 12, 2011 is one of my favorite sports memories as well. Dirk! (And the fact it came against the Heat made it all the more delicious, after how the Mavs got jobbed by the refs in 2006.)

I've been on this blog for 3 coaching searches.  The one constant through all 3 has been this image:

I still have an involuntary visceral reaction every time I see it.

This brings up one question I have about Endzone.  It states that Jim essentially made up his mind a day or two before coming here, when we were all pretty confident "it's happening" probably a week before.  Were there legal considerations regarding his 49ers contract that required Bacon to offer this version of events?

Is that yes, he made up his mind a day or two before coming here. But only because Harbaugh is laser-focused on the job at-hand, whether or not it's in his future plans. Even though the 49ers were eliminated from the playoffs in Week 15, Harbaugh wasn't going to slack (during Week 16, December 28).

I also feel that Bacon knows that with Harbaugh, nothing's said and done until pen is put to paper. He seemed to allude to as much in his tweets and blog posts last fall. So, Harbaugh could have had a change of heart. However, Bacon seems to insist that Michigan made sure every single step of the process was handled with white gloves. Also, that Harbaugh wasn't bothered with media attention or any surprises, so he could focus on the job at-hand.

Bacon seems to be saying that having Jack handle the inevitable devils that arise in the details was probably the best strategy to get Jim here in any scenario.

But the complete gift from God was Brandon's ondoing. That's something nobody had control over, and I'm guessing he would have scuttled the whole thing by leaking a retail activation for a "Jim-Bo Bobblehead" (one body, two heads) before the Harbaugh-U/M deal was executed.
