MBB no longer recruiting Amedeo Della Valle

Submitted by Wenham Wolverine on

Per UMHoops, Rock Me Amedeo is no longer in the picture for Michigan.

Dylan included this tweet from Della Valle:

So Michigan STOPPED recruiting me today? That's really fair !!! WoW !!

It appears that we are done for 2012 recruiting.

I think Sam Webb was talking about how he has a very similar skill set to Staukaus. Now that we have the PG position shored up, we no longer need to take a player who would really be playing out of his more natural position for us, if that makes sense. I'm not the most knowledgable person when it comes to basketball recruiting, but the way Sam layed it out yesterday, it made perfect sense.

I think that some of the people on this board are being way too harsh on a 17-yr old who just received some very disappointing news.

From his perspective, he was probably getting some very positive signals from the coaching staff and then was told out of the blue (from his perspective) that he was in fact no longer needed or wanted.   That can't be an easy thing to hear.

Could he have done something different?   Maybe.   Should he have seen the handwriting on the wall?   Maybe.   But, it's still a 17-yr old kid who just got some very disappointing news and reacted instantaeously on Twitter (and it wasn't even that much of an inflammatory tweet).

I'm ok with this.  You really don't need more than 10 scholarship players  (much less 12), and he's really a role player/backup 2 guard type, which isn't a huge need.  I think his value is primarily due to the fact that he can shoot and he's available late.  I have no problem banking this scholly for next year.

As a strategic move for Michigan - it makes sense to wait till 13-14.

As a reaction from a kid - it makes sense too.  The coaches have been 'recruiting him' - this means they're telling him how much they like him, how well he'll fit, how much he'd like it at Michigan, etc.  Regardless of the circumstances from M's end, when hehear all this and then suddenly get dropped - it's going to be disappointing.  He hasn't been through this before, and one of his best options for where he'll live and learn for the next 4 years is gone.

I think he would have been a nice "end of the bench" guy but I'm not disappointed with UM moving on.  I hadn't seen anything in his film that got me all that excited - though I know he plays on a top team and theoretically could have been a nice combo guard.

But this season he would have been competing with Stauskas, Vogrich, Hardaway, Burke, and Spike for minutes (maybe Akunne too).  The coaches have also told GR3 that they see him at the 2/3 position in the long-term.  With Walton, Irvin, and maybe Hatch coming in next year it is a really crowded back-court.  I think they decided to bank the scholarship and see how things play out.

If Burke and Hardaway leave for the NBA, we may need some help.  If they stay we're suddenly over-crowded.  I think there are better options in 2013 so they moved on.

some of the people in this thread are borderline heartless. jesus. you'd think della valle was cackling in his living room, smoking cigars and cradling desparate offer letters from power schools across the ncaa.

Does anyone think he WOULDN'T have committed as soon as he got here?

Too bad for ADV, but I don't think he has much of a reason to be upset.  He should have known that he wasn't going to get picked up after Trey announced that he was coming back (and the pickup of Spike).  ADV seems like a pretty decent combo guard and I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up at a decent program down south or zona.  It seems like his gf is going to texas a&m so maybe he might want to stay close to her.  Whatever he does, I don't want to see him at Ohio...
